2 Kings 10:18-28 ESV 
 
18 Then Jehu assembled all the people and said to them, “Ahab served Baal a little, but Jehu will serve him much. 19 Now therefore call to me all the prophets of Baal, all his worshipers and all his priests. Let none be missing, for I have a great sacrifice to offer to Baal. Whoever is missing shall not live.” But Jehu did it with cunning in order to destroy the worshipers of Baal. 20 And Jehu ordered, “Sanctify a solemn assembly for Baal.” So they proclaimed it. 21 And Jehu sent throughout all Israel, and all the worshipers of Baal came, so that there was not a man left who did not come. And they entered the house of Baal, and the house of Baal was filled from one end to the other. 22 He said to him who was in charge of the wardrobe, “Bring out the vestments for all the worshipers of Baal.” So he brought out the vestments for them. 23 Then Jehu went into the house of Baal with Jehonadab the son of Rechab, and he said to the worshipers of Baal, “Search, and see that there is no servant of the Lord here among you, but only the worshipers of Baal.” 24 Then they went in to offer sacrifices and burnt offerings. 
 
Now Jehu had stationed eighty men outside and said, “The man who allows any of those whom I give into your hands to escape shall forfeit his life.” 25 So as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, Jehu said to the guard and to the officers, “Go in and strike them down; let not a man escape.” So when they put them to the sword, the guard and the officers cast them out and went into the inner room of the house of Baal, 26 and they brought out the pillar that was in the house of Baal and burned it. 27 And they demolished the pillar of Baal, and demolished the house of Baal, and made it a latrine to this day. 28 Thus Jehu wiped out Baal from Israel. 
 
 
THE DESTRUCTION OF THE HOUSE OF BAAL. 
 
Samaria was the center of Baal cult worship. The temple of Baal was its iconic structure. King Jehu enjoined all the worshippers of Baal to come for a religious festival at the temple of Baal in Samaria. Hence, he announced, “Ahab served Baal a little, but Jehu will serve him much. Now therefore call to me all the prophets of Baal, all his worshipers and all his priests. Let none be missing, for I have a great sacrifice to offer to Baal. Whoever is missing shall not live.” 
 
 
This was a trap. 
 
 
Everyone came so that the place was packed from end to end with unsuspecting Baal worshipers. Jehu went into the house of Baal with Jehonadab the son of Rechab, and he said to the worshipers of Baal, “Search, and see that there is no servant of the Lord here among you, but only the worshipers of Baal.” He saw to it that no servant of the Lord will be one among in the massacre. 
 
As they did the offering, Jehu instructed his 80 armed guards and officers to kill everyone inside, not allowing anyone to stay alive. They went into the inner room of the house of Baal, and they brought out the pillar that was in the house of Baal and burned it. And they demolished the pillar of Baal, and demolished the house of Baal, and made it a latrine to this day. Thus Jehu wiped out Baal from Israel. 
 
Definitely, it was an aggressive and decisive act of Jehu to eradicate Baal’s worship. In a similar way to a cancer patient, his malignant tumor must be removed completely. Otherwise, a single cell may multiply agressively inside his body. Undoubtedly, the temple of Baal was the malignant tumor that Jehu had demolished and turned into a latrine. 
 
Should you and I are having some sin strongholds in our lives, we must take a drastic and decisive decision. Should we kill the octopus of sin, we must destroy and cut not only the tentacles but crushed the head. Thus, in our fight against sin, we must not take second chances. Sin always contaminates like a little leaven that always leavens the whole lump.

6 Then he wrote to them a second letter, saying, “If you are on my side, and if you are ready to obey me, take the heads of your master's sons and come to me at Jezreel tomorrow at this time.” Now the king's sons, seventy persons, were with the great men of the city, who were bringing them up. 7 And as soon as the letter came to them, they took the king's sons and slaughtered them, seventy persons, and put their heads in baskets and sent them to him at Jezreel. 8 When the messenger came and told him, “They have brought the heads of the king's sons,” he said, “Lay them in two heaps at the entrance of the gate until the morning.” 9 Then in the morning, when he went out, he stood and said to all the people, “You are innocent. It was I who conspired against my master and killed him, but who struck down all these? 10 Know then that there shall fall to the earth nothing of the word of the Lord, which the Lord spoke concerning the house of Ahab, for the Lord has done what he said by his servant Elijah.” 11 So Jehu struck down all who remained of the house of Ahab in Jezreel, all his great men and his close friends and his priests, until he left him none remaining. 
 
17 And when he came to Samaria, he struck down all who remained to Ahab in Samaria, till he had wiped them out, according to the word of the Lord that he spoke to Elijah. 
 
 
THE BUCK ENDS HERE. 
 
King Jehu’s demand for the guardians to cut off the heads of Ahab’s sons had shown how determined he was to wipe off Ahab’s clan. The guardians for having pledged to do everything for him did so. The 70 heads placed in baskets were transported to Jezreel. At the of the city gate, Jehu had displayed these heads in two heaps for people to see. What a distasteful sight for them to behold. This object lesson should ellicit fear among the people. 
 
The next morning he stood and pronounced, “You are innocent. It was I who conspired against my master and killed him, but who struck down all these? Know then that there shall fall to the earth nothing of the word of the Lord, which the Lord spoke concerning the house of Ahab, for the Lord has done what he said by his servant Elijah.” Nobody was to be blamed except himself. It should be noted that the late U.S. Pres. Harry Truman, who placed in his office the frame that read, “The bucks end here.” Like him, he took total responsibility to the mass murder. 
 
Jehu did all these without vaccilating fior he believed that it was in keeping with the word of God through the prophet Elijah. God’s word has the absolute authority. Jesus had said, “For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.”[Matt 5:18] Furthermore, He strongly claimed, “If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day.”[John 12:47,48] 
 
Our response to the word of God should be neither be disrespect nor neglect. We must take it as it is. God’s word won’t be in vain. Isaiah said; 
“For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven 
and do not return there but water the earth, 
making it bring forth and sprout, 
giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, 
11 so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; 
it shall not return to me empty, 
but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, 
and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.”[Isa 55:10,11]

24 And Jehu drew his bow with his full strength, and shot Joram between the shoulders, so that the arrow pierced his heart, and he sank in his chariot. 25 Jehu said to Bidkar his aide, “Take him up and throw him on the plot of ground belonging to Naboth the Jezreelite. For remember, when you and I rode side by side behind Ahab his father, how the Lord made this pronouncement against him: 26 ‘As surely as I saw yesterday the blood of Naboth and the blood of his sons—declares the Lord—I will repay you on this plot of ground.’ Now therefore take him up and throw him on the plot of ground, in accordance with the word of the Lord.” 
 
30 When Jehu came to Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it. And she painted her eyes and adorned her head and looked out of the window. 31 And as Jehu entered the gate, she said, “Is it peace, you Zimri, murderer of your master?” 32 And he lifted up his face to the window and said, “Who is on my side? Who?” Two or three eunuchs looked out at him. 33 He said, “Throw her down.” So they threw her down. And some of her blood spattered on the wall and on the horses, and they trampled on her. 34 Then he went in and ate and drank. And he said, “See now to this cursed woman and bury her, for she is a king's daughter.” 35 But when they went to bury her, they found no more of her than the skull and the feet and the palms of her hands. 36 When they came back and told him, he said, “This is the word of the Lord, which he spoke by his servant Elijah the Tishbite: ‘In the territory of Jezreel the dogs shall eat the flesh of Jezebel, 37 and the corpse of Jezebel shall be as dung on the face of the field in the territory of Jezreel, so that no one can say, This is Jezebel.’” 
 
THE RETRIBUTION FROM GOD 
 
In his pursuit to kill Ahab’s descendants, Jehu had shot the fleeing king Joram of Israel to death with an arrow. He then commanded his aide to “take him up and throw him on the plot of ground belonging to Naboth the Jezreelite.” What is the significance of this? He rehearsed the pronouncement he heard from Elijah, the Lord had against him: ‘As surely as I saw yesterday the blood of Naboth and the blood of his sons—declares the Lord—I will repay you on this plot of ground.’ 
 
Jehu, then proceeded to Jezreel in order to apprehend Jezebel. She was found dressed in a prostitute looking out of the window when three eunuchs threw her down as Jehu challenged them to do. It was a very horrible sight of her body tumbling down, blood spattered on the wall and on the horses, and they trampled on her. 
 
Apparently, Jehu was very determined to kill king Joram and Jezebel. And, although he claimed a prophetic justification for his actions, it was God who permitted everything to happen according to His words. What he did had allusion in to what Elijah had said, ‘Thus says the Lord: “In the place where dogs licked up the blood of Naboth shall dogs lick your own blood.”’[1 Kings 21:19] 
 
God’s judgment may run slowly but surely. Ahab and Jezebel couldn’t run away from God’s retribution. They couldn’t be provoking God to anger with their idolatry forever. His clan will be obliterated by the jealous God. He has warned through Moses, saying, “You shall have no other gods before me. “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me.”[Ex 20:3-5]

25 In the twelfth year of Joram the son of Ahab, king of Israel, Ahaziah the son of Jehoram, king of Judah, began to reign. 26 Ahaziah was twenty-two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned one year in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Athaliah; she was a granddaughter of Omri king of Israel. 27 He also walked in the way of the house of Ahab and did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, as the house of Ahab had done, for he was son-in-law to the house of Ahab. 
 
28 He went with Joram the son of Ahab to make war against Hazael king of Syria at Ramoth-gilead, and the Syrians wounded Joram. 29 And King Joram returned to be healed in Jezreel of the wounds that the Syrians had given him at Ramah, when he fought against Hazael king of Syria. And Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to see Joram the son of Ahab in Jezreel, because he was sick.

THE WAY OF AHAB 
 
When Ahaziah succeeded the throne of his father Jehoram at Judah, he ‘walked in the way of Ahab’ like his father. Most likely, his mother Athaliah had influenced him greatly. As the saying goes, “Apples don’t fall far from the trees.” Athaliah was the daughter of Ahab and Jezebel, the most wicked king and queen of Israel. She did introduce the Baal worship in Judah. 
 
Understandably, there was a peace between the Northern and Southern kingdoms. But, clearly, through this relationship, Ahaziah had implicated himself in the King Joram’s troubles. He had to fight Syria with King Joram, his uncle. This was the price of compromises in relationship. He had to visit Joram, his uncle who was the king of Israel, who was wounded in battle, in order to help him. 
 
The embrace of idolatry had paved the way in fostering relationship between the two kingdoms. However, this had angered God. God is a zealous God. We have to serve God alone and to despise idols. He commanded us through Moses, “You shall have no other gods before me. “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, Should we sacrifice the truth for unity? What is the basis of true unity? Is it not our unity in Christ.”[Ex 20:3-5] 
 
Today, let us be sure not to sacrifice our relationship with God for the sake of external peace. Jesus wants us to walk in the light and not in darkness. It’s impossible to mix both as paddling two rivers with one canoe. “God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.” [1 John 1:5,6]

And when it was told him, “The man of God has come here,” 8 the king said to Hazael, “Take a present with you and go to meet the man of God, and inquire of the Lord through him, saying, ‘Shall I recover from this sickness?’” 9 So Hazael went to meet him, and took a present with him, all kinds of goods of Damascus, forty camels' loads. When he came and stood before him, he said, “Your son Ben-hadad king of Syria has sent me to you, saying, ‘Shall I recover from this sickness?’” 10 And Elisha said to him, “Go, say to him, ‘You shall certainly recover,’ but the Lord has shown me that he shall certainly die.” 11 And he fixed his gaze and stared at him, until he was embarrassed. And the man of God wept. 12 And Hazael said, “Why does my lord weep?” He answered, “Because I know the evil that you will do to the people of Israel. You will set on fire their fortresses, and you will kill their young men with the sword and dash in pieces their little ones and rip open their pregnant women.” 13 And Hazael said, “What is your servant, who is but a dog, that he should do this great thing?” Elisha answered, “The Lord has shown me that you are to be king over Syria.” 14 Then he departed from Elisha and came to his master, who said to him, “What did Elisha say to you?” And he answered, “He told me that you would certainly recover.” 15 But the next day he took the bed cloth and dipped it in water and spread it over his face, till he died. And Hazael became king in his place. 
 
 
REMORSELESS. 
 
Benhadad was desperate to ask help for healing. He asked Hazael, who brought extravagant gifts [40 camel-loads of goods] with him, to Elisha, who was in town. He wanted prognosis about his future more than seeking for revenge for the past. It is ironical that he consulted the Lord while an Isralite king Ahaziah in the past had consulted Baal-zebub. 
 
And, as Hazael told Elisha, he must had been puzzled to hear the prophet’s answer. Elisha said, “Go, say to him, ‘You shall certainly recover,’ but the Lord has shown me that he shall certainly die.” Furthermore, Hazael should had humbled and felt embarassed himself upon hearing the reason of the prophet’s weeping. Elisha wept because he knew beforehand that Hazael would become king someday and will harass his people ruthlessly. He said, “Because I know the evil that you will do to the people of Israel. You will set on fire their fortresses, and you will kill their young men with the sword and dash in pieces their little ones and rip open their pregnant women.” 
 
Simply said, Hazael had a wicked plan to usurp the kingdom and Elisha knew everything about it. The Lord had revealed it to Elisha. Sadly, he has had an unconscionable or hardened heart. It was so hard that he just answered nonchalantly, “What is your servant, who is but a dog, that he should do this great thing?” The words and tears of the prophet did not soften his heart. He went back to Syria and murdered the king by suffocating him in a cold blood and clandestine fashion. 
 
A hardened heart is impervious to the Holy Spirit’s conviction. The Spirit’s role is to convict the world of sin, righteousness and judgment. [John 16:9,10] Thus, if we sinned and we feel guilty, we must be thankful. For, such feeling of shame and guilt do remind us of the grace of God for making our hearts sensitive. Let’s therefore “exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.”[Heb 3:13]

THE PRICE FOR INSULTING GOD. 
 
Certainly, the four lepers had enjoyed the blessings. And, because they changed their minds, they became also a source of blessings to the hungry dwellers of the city. In contrast, the scornful captain was trampled to death by the stampede, having not able to enjoy the blessing. 
 
His death appeared like an accident. But, it was not. The prophet Elisha had predicted that he would die in the midst of blessing. It’s ironical, is it not? The price of mocking God or going against God. Man had a free course to resist God. But, the consequence would be disastrous. Is there anybody who could dare to go against God? 
 
In the book of Acts, the council of Pharisees vehemently opposed the preaching of the gospel so that they wanted to kill the apostles. But, one of them named Gamaliel said, “Men of Israel, take care what you are about to do with these men. For before these days Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody, and a number of men, about four hundred, joined him. He was killed, and all who followed him were dispersed and came to nothing. After him Judas the Galilean rose up in the days of the census and drew away some of the people after him. He too perished, and all who followed him were scattered. So in the present case I tell you, keep away from these men and let them alone, for if this plan or this undertaking is of man, it will fail; but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You might even be found opposing God!” So they took his advice” [Acts 5:35b-39] 
 
Simply said, God is in control even though skeptics and violent people are opposed to Him and His work. He does not need our help so that like the apostles we can rest by praying unto Him should opposition comes. As Paul has said, if God is for us, who can be against us. Nobody.

2 Kings 7:16-20 ESV

16 Then the people went out and plundered the camp of the Syrians. So a seah of fine flour was sold for a shekel, and two seahs of barley for a shekel, according to the word of the LORD. 17 Now the king had appointed the captain on whose hand he leaned to have charge of the gate. 24 Afterward Ben-hadad king of Syria mustered his entire army and went up and besieged Samaria. 25 And there was a great famine in Samaria, as they besieged it, until a donkey's head was sold for eighty shekels of silver, and the fourth part of a kab of dove's dung for five shekels of silver. 26 Now as the king of Israel was passing by on the wall, a woman cried out to him, saying, “Help, my lord, O king!” 27 And he said, “If the Lord will not help you, how shall I help you? From the threshing floor, or from the winepress?” 28 And the king asked her, “What is your trouble?” She answered, “This woman said to me, ‘Give your son, that we may eat him today, and we will eat my son tomorrow.’ 29 So we boiled my son and ate him. And on the next day I said to her, ‘Give your son, that we may eat him.’ But she has hidden her son.” 30 When the king heard the words of the woman, he tore his clothes—now he was passing by on the wall—and the people looked, and behold, he had sackcloth beneath on his body— 31 and he said, “May God do so to me and more also, if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat remains on his shoulders today.” 
 
32 Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. Now the king had dispatched a man from his presence, but before the messenger arrived Elisha said to the elders, “Do you see how this murderer has sent to take off my head? Look, when the messenger comes, shut the door and hold the door fast against him. Is not the sound of his master's feet behind him?” 33 And while he was still speaking with them, the messenger came down to him and said, “This trouble is from the Lord! Why should I wait for the Lord any longer?” 
 
A DESPERATE KING. 
The next siege of Samaria by the Syrian king Behadad was significantly more serious. There was a severe famine so that “a donkey’s head sold for eighty shekels of silver, and a quarter of a cab of seed pods for five shekels.” One woman was even prompted to do the unthinkable. She resorted to cannibalism, eating her own son with another woman. She complained that this woman hid her son when it was the time to et her son also. Definitely, there are times that physical hunger may overrule one’s morality. Physical hardships may drive people to neglect moral values and do the unimaginable. 
 
When the king of Israel knew this predicament of the two mothers, he felt helpless. He said, “If the Lord will not help you, how shall I help you? From the threshing floor, or from the winepress?” Only the Lord could provide needs. And the king seemed to recognize this by his mourning and wearing of sackcloth. 
 
The king should have waited the Lord but he became impatient. His impatience had led him to blaming Elisha, thereby blaming God. He blamed Elisha for not taking action. This is strange to somebody who invoked the name of God. Does he believe that that the prophet has in control of their own and their destinies? Is removing Elisha would solve the problem? 
 
In this time of pandemic, are we desperate as the king of Israel? However, are we like him who is frustrated for His silence and inaction? The mixed multitude did the same to Moses when they were trapped before the Red Sea. 
 
Let us always remember that God wants us to trust Him and not our notion. Prov 3:5-6 says; 
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, 
and do not lean on your own understanding. 
In all your ways acknowledge him, 
and he will make straight your paths.”

Shall I strike them down?” 22 He answered, “You shall not strike them down. Would you strike down those whom you have taken captive with your sword and with your bow? Set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink and go to their master.” 23 So he prepared for them a great feast, and when they had eaten and drunk, he sent them away, and they went to their master. And the Syrians did not come again on raids into the land of Israel.

WHEN GOD OPENED THEIR EYES. 
 
The blinded Syrian army was at the mercy of the seer, Elisha, who led them out of Dothan to Samaria. This blindness must not be physical but rather a dazed condition so that they were easily manipulated by Elisha. And, the king of Israel took this as an opportunity to kill the army mercilessly. Afterall, they are an enemy. 
 
Elisha, however, differed him strongly, by saying, “You shall not strike them down. Would you strike down those whom you have taken captive with your sword and with your bow? Set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink and go to their master.” Christians should have a magnanimous spirit as Jesus said. “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?”[Matt 5:43-48] 
 
 
Even, Solomon has admonished us, saying, “Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, and let not your heart be glad when he stumbles.” [Prov 24:17] The reason is that to show vengeance belongs to the Lord alone. Paul explains, “Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” [Rom 12:19-21] 
 
The Lord had opened the eyes not only to the Syrian armies but to the king of Israel also. He understood what the prophet were saying. Interestingly, the goodness that the prophet Elisha and the king of Israel in sending the Syrian army back unharmed had paid dividends. The Syrian did not come for raids anymore to the land of Israel. At the end of the day, we have seen thatall of their eyes, that of Elisha, the king of Israel and the Syrian army, were opened to see God. And, they experienced the peace among themselves, correspondingly.

But when Naaman had gone from him a short distance, 20 Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, said, “See, my master has spared this Naaman the Syrian, in not accepting from his hand what he brought. As the Lord lives, I will run after him and get something from him.” 21 So Gehazi followed Naaman. And when Naaman saw someone running after him, he got down from the chariot to meet him and said, “Is all well?” 22 And he said, “All is well. My master has sent me to say, ‘There have just now come to me from the hill country of Ephraim two young men of the sons of the prophets. Please give them a talent of silver and two changes of clothing.’” 23 And Naaman said, “Be pleased to accept two talents.” And he urged him and tied up two talents of silver in two bags, with two changes of clothing, and laid them on two of his servants. And they carried them before Gehazi. 24 And when he came to the hill, he took them from their hand and put them in the house, and he sent the men away, and they departed. 25 He went in and stood before his master, and Elisha said to him, “Where have you been, Gehazi?” And he said, “Your servant went nowhere.” 26 But he said to him, “Did not my heart go when the man turned from his chariot to meet you? Was it a time to accept money and garments, olive orchards and vineyards, sheep and oxen, male servants and female servants? 27 Therefore the leprosy of Naaman shall cling to you and to your descendants forever.” So he went out from his presence a leper, like snow. 
 
THE EVIL OF GREED. 
 
Obviously, Gehazi had not embraced the spiritual values of his master, Elisha. He went after Naaman and manufactured a story that his master had changed his mind. What he asked for did not arouse suspicion. It was a clever ploy in not asking too much. He did not ask for gold but one talent of silver and two changes of clothing. Greed makes one clever in making cover up stories. Let us be aware that when we are tempted to lie against God, Satan is there to help us. He is the father of lies.[John 8:44] 
 
And, Naaman, for having the pleasure to bless Elisha, eagerly dipped into his treasures and give two talents of silver in two bags, with two changes of clothing instead. Presumably, Gehazi had calculated that Elisha won’t know anything about his clandestine acts. But he was wrong. When asked by Elisha where he has been, he denied vehemently. One sin breeds to another. 
 
Clearly, Gehazi took an opportunity as a servant of Elisha as a means of gain. He thought he could continue to serve under Elisha with greed in his heart for material things. Is godliness a means of gain? Certainly not. Paul said, “But godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.”[1 Tim 6:6-9] 
 
We couldn’t serve God and mammon [money] at the same time, could we? Jesus had said plainly, “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.” [Matt 6:24] Simply said, we must not use God for money. Rather, we should use money to serve God, and not the other way around. 
 
Ultimately, Gehazi had reaped what he had sown. What he got couldn’t compensate the punishment he received. Yes, he got Naaman’s silver. But, he also got his leprosy that was passed unto his descendants. Like Achan’s punishment of losing his clan, the price of greed is still equally costly to Naaman and his family. While Achan and family were stoned to death, he and his family were plagued with leprosy.

And he said, “Behold, I know that there is no God in all the earth but in Israel; so accept now a present from your servant.” 16 But he said, “As the Lord lives, before whom I stand, I will receive none.” And he urged him to take it, but he refused. 17 Then Naaman said, “If not, please let there be given to your servant two mule loads of earth, for from now on your servant will not offer burnt offering or sacrifice to any god but the Lord. 18 In this matter may the Lord pardon your servant: when my master goes into the house of Rimmon to worship there, leaning on my arm, and I bow myself in the house of Rimmon, when I bow myself in the house of Rimmon, the Lord pardon your servant in this matter.” 19 He said to him, “Go in peace.”

A 360 DEGREE TURN. 
 
Clearly, Naaman had faith that he could be healed by the prophet Elisha. Otherwise, he should not have travelled miles with gifts to see the prophet. The problem was that he had a preconceived idea how he should be healed. Having not able to meet Elisha personally and was asked to dip at the Jordan River seven times were far from what he thought about. He felt insulted. But, a simple word from one of his servants had convinced him to just do it. He got healed. 
 
 
In deep gratitude, he returned to Elisha to thank and present him his presents. This time Elisha met him in person but not to accept his presents. By doing so, he strongly made an impression that God must take the center stage and not him. 
 
Through this miracle, Naaman’s eyes were opened to know God personally. It was not Elisha but God who healed him. It was necessary for him to go to Jordan river to experience the power of God. Indeed, the truth that God heals using a murky river without the presence of the prophet is quite a scene. Simply put, God weaned Naaman from trusting the prophet inorder to know and trust God directly. 
 
His change was 360 degrees. He went back to Syria never again to make burnt offerings and sacrifices to any god. [v.17] Instead, he will worship the Lord upon an altar made of earth taken from the land. This has an allusion to Deut 20:24, “An altar of earth you shall make for me and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your oxen. In every place where I cause my name to be remembered I will come to you and bless you.” However, Naaman apologetically recognized an unavoidable occasions when he is found in the temple of Rimmon in the course of his official duties.[v.18] He went off with the blessing of Elisha. 
 
Like Naaman, we could be enamored by our successes. And, God allowed some reversals to make us humble and broken inorder to encounter God. And, when we sought Him we found Him, healing our soul from hoplessness to joy.

PICK UP YOUR SON. 
 
When Elisha saw the dead boy lying on his bed, he shut the door and by himself, he prayed unto the Lord. Jesus had declared this posture when we pray, saying, “But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”[Matt 6:6] Are we desperate enough to plead with God in secret? 
 
Then he laid himself upon the baby, mouth to his mouth, eye to his eye and hands to his hands. Suddenly, the boy’s body became warm. Elisha got up, paced back and forth for a while in the house. And, he stretched himself once more upon him. By this time, the boy had resuscitated so that he called Gehazi to call the mother. As she came in, he said to her, “Pick up your son.” 
 
She received her son from God again. Simply put, she received her son twice from God. The second time must be sweeter. An unbeliever is born once in this world but may die twice, if he won’t trust the gospel for their salvation. Physical and spiritual deaths are haunting him. However, if he believes on Jesus, he is born twice and will die once. That is, he may die physically but his soul won’t languish in Christless eternity in hell. A born again believer is twice owned by God, that is by creation and by spiritual regeneration. 
 
There is joy, without a doubt, when our birthday comes. We celebrate our physical life having been extended by God. What about a celebration of our spiritual birthday? Does it not call for a much joyous celebration? Is there a greater privilege other than to be born into the family of God? Hence, we can say with te apostle John, “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.”[1 John 3:1] 
 
As the woman picked her son up, she bowed down in worship. She left leaving her sorrows and hopelessness behind. Similarly, we can pick up our broken but mended lives and start to live anew in the Lord. Indeed, the life with have in Christ is design for our fullness [abundance]. [John 10:10] Let’s celebrate our life in Christ today.

32 When Elisha came into the house, he saw the child lying dead on his bed. 33 So he went in and shut the door behind the two of them and prayed to the Lord. 34 Then he went up and lay on the child, putting his mouth on his mouth, his eyes on his eyes, and his hands on his hands. And as he stretched himself upon him, the flesh of the child became warm. 35 Then he got up again and walked once back and forth in the house, and went up and stretched himself upon him. The child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes. 36 Then he summoned Gehazi and said, “Call this Shunammite.” So he called her. 21 When all the Moabites heard that the kings had come up to fight against them, all who were able to put on armor, from the youngest to the oldest, were called out and were drawn up at the border. 22 And when they rose early in the morning and the sun shone on the water, the Moabites saw the water opposite them as red as blood. 23 And they said, “This is blood; the kings have surely fought together and struck one another down. Now then, Moab, to the spoil!” 24 But when they came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose and struck the Moabites, till they fled before them. And they went forward, striking the Moabites as they went. 25 And they overthrew the cities, and on every good piece of land every man threw a stone until it was covered. They stopped every spring of water and felled all the good trees, till only its stones were left in Kir-hareseth, and the slingers surrounded and attacked it. 26 When the king of Moab saw that the battle was going against him, he took with him 700 swordsmen to break through, opposite the king of Edom, but they could not. 27 Then he took his oldest son who was to reign in his place and offered him for a burnt offering on the wall. And there came great wrath against Israel. And they withdrew from him and returned to their own land. 
 
THE SOVEREIGN ACTS OF GOD. 
 
The Moabites rallied everyone, from the youngest to the oldest, to fight the Jews. Amazingly, they saw the pools of water as red as blood at a distance. This had deceived them to think that the Jews were killed out of infighting. Thus, they rushed to get the spoil. But, the Israelites rose and struck them in an ambush. They pursued them as they fled away striking everyone. 
 
They overtook completely their cities exactly as Elisha had said. They overthrew the cities, and on every good piece of land every man threw a stone until it was covered. They stopped every spring of water and felled all the good trees, till only its stones were left in Kir-hareseth, and the slingers surrounded and attacked it. 
 
Upon seeing his inevtable defeat, the king of Moab fled with 700 swordsmen. They wanted to breakthrough opposite the king of Edom but they couldn’t. Out of desperation he offered his eldest son, his successor to the throne, as a burnt offering to his idol. This caused a great ‘wrath’ to the Israelites, who were on the verge of winning, to withdraw. 
 
Did the idol overpower God? Isn’t it that an idol is nothing before God? Definitely, God has allowed this to happen. He can use Babylon and Assyria later to fulfill His plan and purposes to discipline the Israelites. According the psalmist, “ Surely the wrath of man shall praise you; the remnant of wrath you will put on like a belt.”[Psa 76:10] 
 
Though how surprising these events were, Elisha’s prophecy happened exactly as proclaimed. Their withdrawal in such fashion did not nullify the prophecy. It does prove that not everything was revealed to Elisha by God. God had defied man’s expectations. God is not bound by the conventional. Why? He is the Sovereign God so that His actions could surprise us.

Go to the prophets of your father and to the prophets of your mother.” But the king of Israel said to him, “No; it is the Lord who has called these three kings to give them into the hand of Moab.” 14 And Elisha said, “As the Lord of hosts lives, before whom I stand, were it not that I have regard for Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would neither look at you nor see you. 15 But now bring me a musician.” And when the musician played, the hand of the Lord came upon him. 16 And he said, “Thus says the Lord, ‘I will make this dry streambed full of pools.’ 17 For thus says the Lord, ‘You shall not see wind or rain, but that streambed shall be filled with water, so that you shall drink, you, your livestock, and your animals.’ 18 This is a light thing in the sight of the Lord. He will also give the Moabites into your hand, 19 and you shall attack every fortified city and every choice city, and shall fell every good tree and stop up all springs of water and ruin every good piece of land with stones.” 20 The next morning, about the time of offering the sacrifice, behold, water came from the direction of Edom, till the country was filled with water.

GOD HONORS THE HUMBLE 
 
Certainly, Elisha did not honor Jehoram as a true worshiper. Sarcastically, he advised him to go back to the prophets of his parents. He agreed to help him only because of Jehoshaphat. In other words, God through Elisha will show His goodness to Jehoram only because of Jehoshaphat. 
 
Jehoshaphat humbled so that he gained the favor from the prophet. Indeed, God will give grace to the humble. [1 Pet 5:5] Solomon even says, “Before destruction a man's heart is haughty, but humility comes before honor.”[Prov 18:12] And, the people around Jehoshaphat had experienced God’s favor as well. 
 
Then, the prophet Elisha had prophesied that streambeds will be filled with water so that their cattles and animals could drink. That God will give Moabites unto them so that they will ruin every fortified city including all the trees and springs of waters. Thus, the next morning, about the time of offering the sacrifice, behold, water came from the direction of Edom, till the country was filled with water. 
 
Humility may reverse the mishaps and bad consequences we experience in life. For in humility, we recognize our brokenness and thereby, are prompted to ask help. And God is there ready to pour His grace and mercy to us. Definitely, humility was the key to David’s greatness, so he says; 
“ You have given me the shield of your salvation, 
and your right hand supported me, 
and your gentleness made me great.”[Psa 18:35]

2 Kings 3:4-8 ESV 
 
4 Now Mesha king of Moab was a sheep breeder, and he had to deliver to the king of Israel 100,000 lambs and the wool of 100,000 rams. 5 But when Ahab died, the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel. 6 So King Jehoram marched out of Samaria at that time and mustered all Israel. 7 And he went and sent word to Jehoshaphat king of Judah: “The king of Moab has rebelled against me. Will you go with me to battle against Moab?” And he said, “I will go. I am as you are, my people as your people, my horses as your horses.” 8 Then he said, “By which way shall we march?” Jehoram answered, “By the way of the wilderness of Edom.” 
 
9 So the king of Israel went with the king of Judah and the king of Edom. And when they had made a circuitous march of seven days, there was no water for the army or for the animals that followed them. 10 Then the king of Israel said, “Alas! The Lord has called these three kings to give them into the hand of Moab.” 11 And Jehoshaphat said, “Is there no prophet of the Lord here, through whom we may inquire of the Lord?” Then one of the king of Israel's servants answered, “Elisha the son of Shaphat is here, who poured water on the hands of Elijah.” 12 And Jehoshaphat said, “The word of the Lord is with him.” So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.

A NEGLECT TO PRAY. 
 
When Ahab died, King Mesha of Moab, a vassal kingdom to Israel, rebelled. King Jehoram, Ahab’s son and successor, prepared the kingdom to fight against Moab. He invited King Jehoshaphat of Judah to fight with him. And Jehoshaphat immediately agreed, saying, “I will go. I am as you are, my people as your people, my horses as your horses.” Previously, Jehoshapat was very concerned to ask ‘the counsel of the Lord’ when he helped Ahab to fight against the Syrians.[See 1 kings 22:5] He neglected to pray. He even resorted to tactics right away with Jehoram. [v.8] 
 
we should involve God in our planning and making decisions, should we not? It was Solomon who said; 
 
“The heart of man plans his way, 
but the Lord establishes his steps.”[Prov 16:9] 
Solomon added; “There is a way that seems right to a man, 
but its end is the way to death.[Prov 16:25] 
 
You are may be facing a crossroad today. And, you’ve got to make a big decision. Don’t just trust your guts and neglect to pray. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, 
and do not lean on your own understanding. 
In all your ways acknowledge him, 
and he will make straight your paths.” [Prov 3:5-6] 
 
God will guide us a step at a time. As the psalmist David said, “The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in his way.”[Psa 37:23]. Seeking His guidance does make us wise to avoid pitfalls. It was AJ Gordon who said, “You can do more than pray after you have prayed; but you can never do more than pray until you have prayed.”

21.202 | A Neglect to Pray | 2 Kings 3:4-8 | God's Word for Today  with Pastor Nazario Sinon

2 Kings 2:23-25 ESV 
 
23 He went up from there to Bethel, and while he was going up on the way, some small boys came out of the city and jeered at him, saying, “Go up, you baldhead! Go up, you baldhead!” 24 And he turned around, and when he saw them, he cursed them in the name of the Lord. And two she-bears came out of the woods and tore forty-two of the boys. 25 From there he went on to Mount Carmel, and from there he returned to Samaria. 
 
23 Mula roo'y pumunta siya sa Bethel; at samantalang siya'y nasa daan, may mga kabataan na dumating mula sa bayan, na sinasabi, “Humayo ka, ikaw na kalbo! Humayo ka, ikaw na kalbo!”24 Nang siya'y lumingon at makita sila, kanyang sinumpa sila sa pangalan ng PANGINOON. A DIVINE JUDGEMENT 
 
After Elisha healed the waters of Jericho, he met young boys who were mocking and deriding him. It was a clear manifestation of their great disrespect to the man of God. There must be a cause why they have had such behavior. In 1 Kings 12:25-13:34, Bethel is portrayed as the focal city of apostasy. Could it be that they had adopted the culture of the city of treating the prophets badly? Likely, they did. 
 
The behavior of kids are influenced by both nature and nurture. Foolishness are bound their hearts. [Prov 22:15] And in a decadent culture, their foolishness could be enhanced or re-enforced. Children are like mirrors. They reflect their surroundings. That is why, parental discipline is very necessary. As Prov 22:6 says; 
“ Train up a child in the way he should go; 
even when he is old he will not depart from it.” 
 
Interestingly, the NIV had quoted them as ‘youths’, which makes sense. That is, they were not innocent looking young boys making fun of a bald man. The problem was in their hearts not in their mouths. This wickedness was not developed overnight. Sarcastically, they were shouting, “Go up, bald headed.” In a way, they were taunting and insulting him to repeat Elijah’s translation. They were mocking more than his physical appearance but his sacred anointing as a prophet. 
 
Elisha ‘s response was even more intriguing. There was no equivocating. He cursed them in the name of the Lord. That is, he invoked God to deal with them as God saw fit. God had moved two she-bears to maul to death 42 youths, which was a horrible scene. The seriousness of this judgment does tell us about the seriousness of their crime. Surely, it was a warning to all who would scorn the prophet of God. This narrative is not an account of God mauling young children for making fun of a skin head man. Rather, it is a record of an insulting demonstration against God’s prophet by blameworthy youths. 
 
Let’s be watchful to our hearts always.[Prov 4:23] Kids should be discipline even in their formative years. They are who they are because of the nurture they get, besides nature. A disrespect to the man of God is a disrespect to God, and could result to a great punishment from Him.

19 Now the men of the city said to Elisha, “Behold, the situation of this city is pleasant, as my lord sees, but the water is bad, and the land is unfruitful.” 20 He said, “Bring me a new bowl, and put salt in it.” So they brought it to him. 21 Then he went to the spring of water and threw salt in it and said, “Thus says the Lord, I have healed this water; from now on neither death nor miscarriage shall come from it.” 22 So the water has been healed to this day, according to the word that Elisha spoke.

OUR NEED OF HEALING. 
At the city of Jericho, the men went to Elisha for an important need. They asked his help about their bad water and land being unfruitful. The city was under curse during the time of Joshua’s conquest may had caused this.[see Jos 6:46] Definitely, they acknowledged that Elisha could help. And, this became the first test to Elisha. 
 
In his capacity as the prophet, he went to the spring and threw salt unto it, saying, “Thus says the Lord, I have healed this water; from now on neither death nor miscarriage shall come from it.” And, the water was healed miraculously. This was similar to what Moses did to the bitter waters at Marah. He threw a twig into the water surface and the water became sweet. 
 
Definitely, Elisha is a type of Christ. Through Adam’s sin, everyone is under the curse. Paul said, “ Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned.” [Rom 5:12] However, Paul had explained that Jesus came to give life. He said, “But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.”[1 Cor 5:20,21] In 1 Cor 15:45, Paul concluded, “Thus it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being”; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit.” 
 
Like the men of Jericho, each man should recognize his helplessness because of sin. Each one of us is sick. Jesus said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”[Mark 2:17] Would a person seek a doctor if he doesn’t recognize his sickness? The healing in Christ is offered to all. But, it is only effective to those who trust Him. It depends upon each one whether he is going to humble himself or not.

2 Kings 2:15-18 ESV 
 
15 Now when the sons of the prophets who were at Jericho saw him opposite them, they said, “The spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha.” And they came to meet him and bowed to the ground before him. 16 And they said to him, “Behold now, there are with your servants fifty strong men. Please let them go and seek your master. It may be that the Spirit of the Lord has caught him up and cast him upon some mountain or into some valley.” And he said, “You shall not send.” 17 But when they urged him till he was ashamed, he said, “Send.” They sent therefore fifty men. And for three days they sought him but did not find him. 18 And they came back to him while he was staying at Jericho, and he said to them, “Did I not say to you, ‘Do not go’?”

THE FUTILE SEARCH. 
 
The sons of the prophets met Elisha and bowed to the ground before him. By this act, they acknowledged that the succession of Elisha as a full-pledged prophet took place. But, it is puzzling why they insisted to search for Elijah. If Elijah has been taken up into heaven, why look for him on earth? 
 
The answer lies in their ignorance of what really had happened. Only Elisha had seen him taken by a chariot and horses of fire like whirlwind. This was the very requirement for Elisha to receive the blessing he requested from Elijah, that was, a double portion of his spirit. The sons of the prophets did not. They were bystanders at a far distance. 
 
Let’s be like the Bereans to search the scriptures diligently. But, if something is incomprehensible. God meant it to be a secret. And we should accept it as it is. [Deut 29:29] Moreover, it is an important thing to note is for us not to be obsessed for the sole purpose of understanding. But, it is in our desire for obedience. omewhere. To their knowledge, Joshua did not, after all, succeed until Moses was dead? And, have they not seen Elisha tearing down his clothes as a sign of grief? There are no easy answers. 
 
One thing we can learn is to trust God’s word as declared even though at times it is incomprehensible. Sometimes like the sons of the prophets, we waste time in spending so much time to understand rather than obeying His revealed word simply. Had they received Elisha’s words, they should not have wasted their time in a futile search of Elijah. 
 
Let’s be like the Bereans to search the scriptures diligently. But, if something is incomprehensible. God meant it to be a secret. And we should accept it as it is. 2 Kings 2:1-6 ESV 
 
 
1 Now when the Lord was about to take Elijah up to heaven by a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal. 2 And Elijah said to Elisha, “Please stay here, for the Lord has sent me as far as Bethel.” But Elisha said, “As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they went down to Bethel. 3 And the sons of the prophets who were in Bethel came out to Elisha and said to him, “Do you know that today the Lord will take away your master from over you?” And he said, “Yes, I know it; keep quiet.” 
 
 
4 Elijah said to him, “Elisha, please stay here, for the Lord has sent me to Jericho.” But he said, “As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they came to Jericho. 5 The sons of the prophets who were at Jericho drew near to Elisha and said to him, “Do you know that today the Lord will take away your master from over you?” And he answered, “Yes, I know it; keep quiet.” 
 
 
 
 
6 Then Elijah said to him, “Please stay here, for the Lord has sent me to the Jordan.” But he said, “As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So the two of them went on. 
 
 
A LOYAL SPIRIT. 
 
 
Earlier, the Lord said to Elijah, “Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus. And when you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael to be king over Syria. And Jehu the son of Nimshi you shall anoint to be king over Israel, and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah you shall anoint to be prophet in your place.”[1 Kings 19:15-16] 
 
 
But, he discouraged Elisha to follow and stay close to him even in the last 24 hours on earth. This is quite puzzling. And, we have no clear reasons, except that Elisha was very clear and commited to pursue his calling. He was so committed to pursue it so that he burn his bridges behind. Let us recall that Elijah “found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen in front of him, and he was with the twelfth. Elijah passed by him and cast his cloak upon him. And he left the oxen and ran after Elijah and said, “Let me kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you.” And he said to him, “Go back again, for what have I done to you?” And he returned from following him and took the yoke of oxen and sacrificed them and boiled their flesh with the yokes of the oxen and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he arose and went after Elijah and assisted him.”[1 Kings 19:19-21] 
 
 
He followed Elijah at Bethel and Jordan closely. Why? He said, “As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” Similarly, Naomi discouraged her daughters-in-law Ruth and Orpah. Orpah went back but Ruth followed Naomi with determination, saying, “Do not urge me to leave you or to return from following you. For where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there will I be buried. May the Lord do so to me and more also if anything but death parts me from you.”[Ruth 1:16,17] 
 
 
Elisha was fixated upon God. The reason to his loyalty to Elijah was because of God, who was behind Elijah. Simply put, he was drawn to God who can transform his life. This was the reason why he asked for ‘a double portion of his spirit.’ Undoubtedly, it’s only God who can do this. 
 
 
Today, let’s keep ‘looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith’, not unto men. [Heb 12:2]

A NEW CREATION 
 
In contrast to the Judaizers belief, the truth is that whatever status we are in and religious rites we practice, including circumcision, couldn’t earn favor before God. It’s not about sincerity about what you do for God. No good works so good enough that could wash away our sins. It’s only the pefect sacrifice of Christ at the cross. This re-echoed with Paul's dismissal of race, gender, or wealth has a meaningful effect to our relationship to God (Gal 3:23–29). 
 
It’s through the new creation. That is, the supernatural act of God in giving us a new birth. In other words, it is completely a sovereign act of God. It’s incomprehensible but true that a sinner, once he repents of his sins and receives Jesus, is ushered into the family of God. John said, “But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” [John 1:12] For this, Paul concluded, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”[2 Cor 5:17] 
 
Nicodemus was a Pharisee, a teacher of the law. Yet, the Lord Jesus had said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”[John 3:3] This is solely the work of the Spirit using the word of God. Peter said, “you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God.”[1 Pet 1:23] 
 
In contrast to the flesh, the Spirit gives life. As Jesus had emphasized, “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all.”[John 6:63] Our status is determined by our relationship with the indwelling Spirit, who placed us into one body, the church. “Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all.”[Col 3:11] 
 
Someday, there will be a grand reunion of all the born again believers coming from all walks of life from all ages and from all corners of the globe. They will worship the Lamb before the throne. As they will hear the twenty four elders in unison who will proclaim; 
“Worthy are you to take the scroll 
and to open its seals, 
for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God 
from every tribe and language and people and nation, 
and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, 
and they shall reign on the earth.” [Rev 5:9-10]

THE LONE RANGER CHRISTIAN MYTH 
 
“If you want to travel faster, walk alone. But, if you want to travel farther, walk together.” This is exactly true in our Christian life. You and I will run out of gas if we travel alone. Our Christian journey is meant to be a community endeavor. We must carry our burdens together. As Heb 10:24,25 says, “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” 
 
The imagery of the church as a body makes isolation of a believer impossible. Paul said, “For the body does not consist of one member but of many. If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. If all were a single member, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, yet one body.” [1 Cor 12:14-20] 
 
The reason is pride. What happens when we see ourselves as self-reliant? We don’t need anyone’s help to carry our load, even when it gets too heavy for us. Or, perhaps, we are simply too proud to do the work of carrying another's burden. We must not fall into the trap of seeing ourselves as the source of our own strength to follow Jesus. 
 
An over estimation of ourselves is lethal to our own downfall. One of the causes is the evil of posturing ourselves as better than others. Paul had warned, “When they measure themselves by one another and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding.”[2 Cor 10:12b] 
 
Having been called as one body, we should always seek to engage one another, should we not? As Rom 12:3-5 says, “For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another “ Paul even added, “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”[Phil 2:3,4] 
 
Today, let’s avoid the lone ranger Christian myth.
