2 Kings 19:25-28 ESV 
 
25 “Have you not heard that I determined it long ago? I planned from days of old what now I bring to pass, that you should turn fortified cities into heaps of ruins, 
 26 while their inhabitants, shorn of strength, are dismayed and confounded, and have become like plants of the field and like tender grass, like grass on the housetops, blighted before it is grown. 
27 “But I know your sitting down and you’re going out and coming in, and your raging against me. 
28 Because you have raged against me and your complacency has come into my ears, I will put my hook in our nose and my bit in your mouth, and I will turn you back on the way by which you came. 
 
THE LORD IS IN CONTROL 
 
After King Hezekiah prayed, the Lord answered him through the prophet Isaiah. Surely, the Lord does hear and answer the prayers of a righteous man. “The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.”[Jas 5:16] We should not be surprised when God answers our prayers, should we? However, we should be alarmed if the Lord is not answering our prayers. 
 
Proudly, Senacherib did argue that it was through his ability that he was able to conquer kingdoms and territories. Unbeknownst to him, that God had determined it beforehand. God said; 
“Have you not heard 
that I determined it long ago? 
I planned from days of old 
what now I bring to pass,” [see v 25] 
 
Isaiah had articulated this, saying; 
“Remember this and stand firm, 
recall it to mind, you transgressors, 
remember the former things of old; 
for I am God, and there is no other; 
I am God, and there is none like me, 
declaring the end from the beginning 
and from ancient times things not yet done, 
saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, 
and I will accomplish all my purpose,’”[Isa 46:8-10] 
 
There is no such thing as an accidental or incidental event in our lives. Senacherib’s life and deeds were absolutely subservient to God’s plan and purposes. Isaiah said; 
“But I know your sitting down 
and your going out and coming in, 
and your raging against me.”[v27] 
 
Because the Lord is in absolute control, in every need and circumstances that happen in and through our lives are interconnected or interrelated. We should, then, be at rest and in reverence to Him in prayer always. Whatever lack we experience in life, Jesus has assured us, saying, “Your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.”[Mat 5:32]

14 Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers and read it; and Hezekiah went up to the house of the Lord and spread it before the Lord. 15 And Hezekiah prayed before the Lord and said: “O Lord, the God of Israel, enthroned above the cherubim, you are the God, you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; you have made heaven and earth. 16 Incline your ear, O Lord, and hear; open your eyes, O Lord, and see; and hear the words of Sennacherib, which he has sent to mock the living God. 17 Truly, O Lord, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations and their lands 18 and have cast their gods into the fire, for they were not gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone. Therefore they were destroyed. 19 So now, O Lord our God, save us, please, from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you, O Lord, are God alone.”

He felt desperate for God’s help but not want of faith. Hezekiah’s greatness as a king was in his faith, expresssed through His prayer. His belief that God should not be equated with the pagan gods. In fact, he exalted God. He said: “O Lord, the God of Israel, enthroned above the cherubim, you are the God, you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; you have made heaven and earth.” [v.15] 
14 Tinanggap ni Hezekias ang sulat sa kamay ng mga sugo, at binasa ito. Pagkatapos ay pumanhik si Hezekias sa bahay ng PANGINOON at iniladlad ito sa harapan ng PANGINOON.15 At si Hezekias ay nanalangin sa harap ng PANGINOON at nagsabi, “O PANGINOONG Diyos ng Israel na nakaupo sa itaas ng mga kerubin, ikaw ang Diyos, ikaw lamang sa lahat ng mga kaharian sa lupa; ikaw ang lumikha ng langit at lupa.16 Ikiling mo ang iyong pandinig, O PANGINOON, at iyong pakinggan at imulat mo ang iyong mga mata, O PANGINOON. Tumingin ka at pakinggan mo ang mga salita ni Senakerib, na kanyang isinugo upang kutyain ang buháy na Diyos.17 Sa katotohanan, PANGINOON, winasak ng mga hari ng Asiria ang mga bansa at ang kanilang mga lupain,18 at inihagis ang kanilang mga diyos sa apoy, sapagkat sila'y hindi mga diyos, kundi gawa ng mga kamay ng mga tao, mga kahoy at bato; kaya't sila'y winasak.19 Ngayon nga, O PANGINOON naming Diyos, iligtas mo kami sa kanyang mga kamay, isinasamo ko sa iyo, upang makilala ng lahat ng mga kaharian sa lupa na ikaw, PANGINOON, ang tanging Diyos.” 
 
YOU, O LORD, ARE GOD ALONE.

This is a wonderful blessing about our relationship with the Lord. Neither one has the monopoly nor somebody is deprived. Specific revelations are provided to the prophets but prayer is available for all. 
 
Jesus has invited all of us to go to Him. He said, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”[Matt 11:28-30]. We could ‘cast all our cares upon Him for He cares for us.”[1 Pet 5:7]

It could be true that Senacherib had wrought success and destroyed the gods of the other pagan nations around. But they were just powerless idols made of wood and stone. But, Yahweh is the only true God, holy and incomparable. That all the kingdoms of the earth shall know the difference, Hezekiah asked God to defeat the Assyrians. He was so zealous to exalt God in his darkest hour, saying, “ You, o Lord, are God alone.”

28 Then the Rabshakeh stood and called out in a loud voice in the language of Judah: “Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria! 29 Thus says the king: ‘Do not let Hezekiah deceive you, for he will not be able to deliver you out of my hand. 30 Do not let Hezekiah make you trust in the Lord by saying, The Lord will surely deliver us, and this city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.’ 31 Do not listen to Hezekiah, for thus says the king of Assyria: ‘Make your peace with me and come out to me. Then each one of you will eat of his own vine, and each one of his own fig tree, and each one of you will drink the water of his own cistern, 32 until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive trees and honey, that you may live, and not die. And do not listen to Hezekiah when he misleads you by saying, “The Lord will deliver us.” 33 Has any of the gods of the nations ever delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria? 34 Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivvah? Have they delivered Samaria out of my hand? 35 Who among all the gods of the lands have delivered their lands out of my hand, that the Lord should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?’” 
 
36 But the people were silent and answered him not a word, for the king's command was, “Do not answer him.” 37 Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the secretary, and Joah the son of Asaph, the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn and told him the words of the Rabshakeh. 
 
 
SILENCE DESPITE SARCASMS 
 
Having had success in his conquest against Samaria, King Sennacherib of Assyria had his eyes turned to Judah. He attacked it and sent the Rabshakeh [chief of princes or field commander] to Hezekiah. Thus, Rabshakeh, with his great army, went to issue a challenge to Hezekiah. Isaiah had recorded this, saying, “And the Rabshakeh said to them, “Say to Hezekiah, ‘Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria: On what do you rest this trust of yours? Do you think that mere words are strategy and power for war? In whom do you now trust, that you have rebelled against me?”[Isa 36:4-5] 
 
The Rabshakeh’s message to the people of Jerusalem was full of lies, boasts, and blasphemies: 
• he questioned the object of their trust 
• he ridiculed Hezekiah’s strategy as weak and ineffective 
• he discounted any help they might receive from Egypt 
• he told them the Lord had turned against them 
• he claimed the Lord had sent him to destroy the land of Judah 
• he crudely reminded them of the horrors of being under siege 
• he accused Hezekiah of deceiving the people 
• he scoffed at the notion of trusting in the Lord 
• he offered gifts of land and peace to anyone who would surrender 
• he reminded them that no nation’s gods had yet been able to deliver it from Assyria 
• he equated the Lord with the impotent gods of the other nations

The people’s response was an amazing silence. Why? “The king's command was, “Do not answer him.” Hezekiah’s silence was golden. Paradoxically, his silence was both a sign of weakness and strength. It’s when silence is marked with confidence. As David had expressed; 
“Be still, and know that I am God. 
I will be exalted among the nations, 
I will be exalted in the earth!” 
The Lord of hosts is with us; 
the God of Jacob is our fortress.”[Psa 46:10,11] 
 
Today, it’s not the threat of the enemy that should control us but the truth of who God is to us. It’s not that we are helpless before our enemies but that our enemies are helpless before our God. May we learn to wait upon God with silence and confidence today.

29 But every nation still made gods of its own and put them in the shrines of the high places that the Samaritans had made, every nation in the cities in which they lived. 30 The men of Babylon made Succoth-benoth, the men of Cuth made Nergal, the men of Hamath made Ashima, 31 and the Avvites made Nibhaz and Tartak; and the Sepharvites burned their children in the fire to Adrammelech and Anammelech, the gods of Sepharvaim. 32 They also feared the LORD and appointed from among themselves all sorts of people as priests of the high places, who sacrificed for them in the shrines of the high places. 33 So they feared the LORD but also served their own gods, after the manner of the nations from among whom they had been carried away. 
 
SYNCRETISM 
 
The settlers who arrived had brought with them their religion and culture and introduced these to the people in the different villages in Samaria. The Sepharvites, in particular, had burned their children in the fire to Adrammelech and Anammelech, the gods of Sepharvaim. But, they did not remove out the worship of Jehovah. Instead, they included him in the pantheon of gods to worship. And this mixed worship was very far from the true worship anymore. As v34,35 had declared, “To this day they do according to the former manner. They do not fear the Lord, and they do not follow the statutes or the rules or the law or the commandment that the Lord commanded the children of Jacob, whom he named Israel.” 
 
God is a jealous God. And His name shouldn’t be treated us equal to their gods. But in this Assyrian captivity, God had allowed it for He had used the Assyrians to chastise them. Somehow, this had served the purpose of God. As the psalmist had said,; 
“Surely the wrath of man shall praise you; 
the remnant of wrath you will put on like a belt.”[Psa 76:10] 
 
Truth mixed with error is as a glass of mineral water with a drop of cyanide. The water may appear clean and harmless but it’s deadly. Let us seek, therefore to worship God with purity of our hearts. As David declared; 
“For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; 
you will not be pleased with a burnt offering. 
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; 
a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.”[Psa 51:16,17] 
 
Today, there is only one acceptable sacrifice. It’s God’s way and provision. And we must not dillute it with anything or else it will be defiled. According to Heb 10:19-22, “Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.”

14 But they would not listen, but were stubborn, as their fathers had been, who did not believe in the LORD their God. 15 They despised his statutes and his covenant that he made with their fathers and the warnings that he gave them. They went after false idols and became false, and they followed the nations that were around them, concerning whom the LORD had commanded them that they should not do like them. 16 And they abandoned all the commandments of the LORD their God, and made for themselves metal images of two calves; and they made an Asherah and worshiped all the host of heaven and served Baal. 17 And they burned their sons and their daughters as offerings and used divination and omens and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the LORD, provoking him to anger. 18 Therefore the LORD was very angry with Israel and removed them out of his sight. None was left but the tribe of Judah only.

OBSTINACY 
 
Israel had provoked the Lord to so much anger because of their idolatry. It is an abomination that was rooted deeper and deeper into their lives both individually and nationally. God had been wooing them back through the prophets. “But they would not listen, but were stubborn, as their fathers had been, who did not believe in the LORD their God. They despised his statutes and his covenant that he made with their fathers and the warnings that he gave them.”[v.14,15] They spiralled down in sin until they hit rock bottom. They “made for themselves metal images of two calves; and they made an Asherah and worshiped all the host of heaven and served Baal. And they burned their sons and their daughters as offerings and used divination and omens and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the LORD”[v.16,17] 
 
“You can’t stop a bird from landing on your head. But you can keep it from building a nest” [ Martin Luther King Jr.] Christians aren’t sinless, are they? We couldn’t prevent our impulses from sinning at all times, could we? That is why, Jesus has told us to pray for forgiveness. [Matt 6:12]. And, John also declared the need of confession, saying, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”[1 John 1:9] 
 
God doesn’t expect us not to sin but not to make it as a lifestyle. We may sin but must settle it by confessing it right away. Hence, it’s our continual refusal to listen from His rebuke and correction that is the concern. The problem of Israel was not that they “could not” listen but they “would not” listen. “They went after false idols and became false.” They became obstinate and stoic as the idols they worshipped. A tragic reality that the psalmist had articulated in Psa 115:4-8; 
“Their idols are silver and gold, 
the work of human hands. 
They have mouths, but do not speak; 
eyes, but do not see. 
They have ears, but do not hear; 
noses, but do not smell. 
They have hands, but do not feel; 
feet, but do not walk; 
and they do not make a sound in their throat. 
Those who make them become like them; 
so do all who trust in them.”

10 When King Ahaz went to Damascus to meet Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria, he saw the altar that was at Damascus. And King Ahaz sent to Uriah the priest a model of the altar, and its pattern, exact in all its details. 11 And Uriah the priest built the altar; in accordance with all that King Ahaz had sent from Damascus, so Uriah the priest made it, before King Ahaz arrived from Damascus. 12 And when the king came from Damascus, the king viewed the altar. Then the king drew near to the altar and went up on it 13 and burned his burnt offering and his grain offering and poured his drink offering and threw the blood of his peace offerings on the altar. 14 And the bronze altar that was before the LORD he removed from the front of the house, from the place between his altar and the house of the LORD, and put it on the north side of his altar. 15 And King Ahaz commanded Uriah the priest, saying, “On the great altar burn the morning burnt offering and the evening grain offering and the king's burnt offering and his grain offering, with the burnt offering of all the people of the land, and their grain offering and their drink offering. And throw on it all the blood of the burnt offering and all the blood of the sacrifice, but the bronze altar shall be for me to inquire by.” 16 Uriah the priest did all this, as King Ahaz commanded. 
 
 
THE STRANGE ALTAR. 
 
King Ahaz travelled to Damascus to pay respect to his new lord. When he saw the altar at Damascus, it caught his attention. He got the model of the altar and sent it to Uriah, the priest. He made instructions to Uriah, the priest, to do some innovations and revisions at the altar in Jerusalem. em.

Why? 
 
The answer is not so evident. Perhaps, it’s the close association between politics and religion in their times. As a new vassal state, this could be one of the reforms needed. But, this is not so clear. However, it’s implicit, by his actions that [i.e. he saw..he sent] he did it due to aesthetics. As a liberal minded king, his travel had broadened his mind that he gained new ideas. He was a king very open for foreign ideas. The temple for him was not where God is but just a political symbol. We could think of the churches in Europe that have become museums, nowadays. Although there is no hint that this reform or change was a requirement, he may had removed some things to avoid offence and replace with things acceptable by the Assyrians. That, he was careful to please his new master. 
 
Seen from the outside, the temple building may appear unchanged. But, it’s tragic that its altar inside was significantly altered. God has set apart and stipulated the exact measurements and placements of every furniture in the tabernacle. Jesus’ anger had shown how jealous is God in preserving the sanctity of the temple. Any alteration or addition won’t be acceptable. 
 
Today, we should always take care our respective ‘altars’, that is our hearts, to be pure and unadulterated before God. How many believers have changed today in the name of being progressive?

10 When King Ahaz went to Damascus to meet Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria, he saw the altar that was at Damascus. And King Ahaz sent to Uriah the priest a model of the altar, and its pattern, exact in all its details. 11 And Uriah the priest built the altar; in accordance with all that King Ahaz had sent from Damascus, so Uriah the priest made it, before King Ahaz arrived from Damascus. 12 And when the king came from Damascus, the king viewed the altar. 5 Then Rezin king of Syria and Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, came up to wage war on Jerusalem, and they besieged Ahaz but could not conquer him. 6 At that time Rezin the king of Syria recovered Elath for Syria and drove the men of Judah from Elath, and the Edomites came to Elath, where they dwell to this day. 7 So Ahaz sent messengers to Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria, saying, “I am your servant and your son. Come up and rescue me from the hand of the king of Syria and from the hand of the king of Israel, who are attacking me.” 8 Ahaz also took the silver and gold that was found in the house of the LORD and in the treasures of the king's house and sent a present to the king of Assyria. 9 And the king of Assyria listened to him. A DESPERATE ACT 
 
Rezin, the king of Syria had colluded with Pekah, the king of Israel to subdue King AhaZ, the king of Judah. As Rezin conquered the southern territory of Judah named Elath, King Ahaz was significantly threatened. He must have thought that sooner, if he couldn’t find an outside help, the enemy would come and devour them. Thus, he decided to seek the help of King Tiglath-Pileser [Pul] of Assyria. 
 
Are you facing a threatening situation today? To whom do you seek help? To God or somebody else? God allows our vulnerabilities to make as realize our need of God. However, King Ahaz was already influenced with the leavened of idolatry. Thus, he was quick to ask help from a heathen king. Perhaps, he was oblivious for the fact that this was not just a military and political issue. It was a spiritual one. He left God in the equation altogether. 
 
The situation became messy. Judah and Southern kingdom should have united to fight Syria and Assyria. Instead, they are turning against each other with their respective protectors. And, subjugation to their protectors was inevitable price to pay. Thus, Ahaz sent a message to Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria, saying, “I am your servant and your son. Come up and rescue me from the hand of the king of Syria and from the hand of the king of Israel, who are attacking me.” Ahaz was victorious over his enemies because of Assyria. Ironically, he was also a slave to Assyria. As a result, Ahaz took the silver and gold that was found in the house of the LORD and in the treasures of the king's house and gave all to him. This is the price of servitude. When God sets us free we are free indeed. Unlike God, Satan won’t gave favor without a corresponding price of serfdom. Paul had pointed this reality by saying, “Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?[Rom 6:3] Thankfully, as His children, “our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.”[Rom 6:6]

GOD’S TOLERANCE IS NOT GOD’S APPROVAL 
 
King Jotham was a good king following the footseps of his father Uzziah’s earlier reign. And, perhaps, he learned a lesson to what happened to his father, he did not enter into the temple of the Lord. According to 2 Chron 27:2, “And he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord according to all that his father Uzziah had done, except he did not enter the temple of the Lord. But the people still followed corrupt practices.” 
 
He was commended for learning what should he not follow about his father’s actions in temple worship. Indeed, children are watching their fathers’ lives so that they can learn from their mistakes themselves. His father Uzziah’s pride that resulted to leprosy was too serious to ignore. Perhaps he learned to follow God because of fear of the consequence but not by his love for God. 
 
He was blessed to become powerful for he walked steadfastly before the Lord his God” (2 Chron 27:6). He fortified his kingdom by rebuilding the Upper Gate of the temple. And, he built the wall at the hill of Ophel and towns, forts, and towers (2 Chron 27:3–4). However, he failed to remove the high places so the people could continue to make sacrifices there (2 Kings 15:35). 
 
God is the strength of the kingdom suppose to be. But, Jotham had played enough politics taking for granted the effect of the worship of idols. For him, there was no problem for the people and his kingdom are doing well. The good result of our compromising actions and decisions don’t make them right, do they? It’s sad when God’s tolerance is mistaken as God’s approval. Just that God has blessed us materially doesn’t mean that he approved the means for it. Grace is not permissive to continue sinning but power to overcome sin.

SLOWLY BUT SURELY 
 
Someday asked, “How to eat an elephant?” One chew at a time is the witty answer. Bit by bit, the Northern Kingdom eventually fell to the Assyrians during the reign of Hosea. During King Menahem’s reign, he paid tribute to Pul [Tiglath Pezer], the king of Assyria, so that there was a temporary respite. “The king of Assyria turned back and did not stay there in the land.”[v.20] But, he stood as the threat on the horizon because Aram had given way to Assyria as the great northern army. After Menahem, his son Pekahiah reigned only to be assasinated by Pekah, one of his chief officers. Argob and Arieh were assasinated too, who perhaps were Pekahiah’s sons. 
 
Pekah’s reign of 20 years was longer than his predecessors combined. However, he noticed that Tiglath-Pileser [Pul] had indeed replaced Aram as the great foe. “He came and captured Ijon, Abel-beth-maacah, Janoah, Kedesh, Hazor, Gilead, and Galilee, all the land of Naphtali, and he carried the people captive to Assyria.”[v.29] After his assasination, the kingdom led by his killer Hosea eventually fell under the Assyrian kingdom. 
 
In the same manner, the enslavement of sin comes from one compromise to another. The approach of our enemy is as a guerella tactical skirmishes. Their little advancement may be taken for granted so that encroachment will be inevitable in the future. The dam collapses when a small leak is unattended. The roof fell when a little hole is taken for granted. Thus, we should not let any foothold of the enemy to wield his power. By His grace, let’s nip the bud of sin for a little leaven will leaven the whole lump in a matter of time. James said, “But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.” [Jas 1:14,15]

AN ABUSE OF POWER. 
 
“Absolute power corrupts absolutely” is a cliché known to many. The problem lies not in having an authority per se. It’s the wicked person who abuses his authority or power . King Menahem was such a despot. He was governed by his selfish and vindictive impulse. 
When the place of Tirzah opposed him, he “sacked it, and he ripped open all the women in it who were pregnant.” It must have been a horrible sight to have the place littered with dead pregnant women with fetuses at their sides. 
 
Just to stay on his throne, Menahem gave Pul[Tiglath Pileser], the king of Assyria, a thousand talents of silver as a tribute. Like holding to the edge of the sword, he turned an enemy by burdening his subjects. Thus, he exacted the money from Israel, that is, from all the wealthy men, fifty shekels of silver from every man, to give to the king of Assyria. Certainly, he did everything he could just to stay in power. 
 
All earthly powers are delegated by God, directly or indirectly. As such, they are subjects to God. “The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place.” [Acts 17:24-26] In other words, God in His sovereignty may allow a wicked king to reign for His purpose. As Psa 76:10 declares, “Surely the wrath of man shall praise you; the remnant of wrath you will put on like a belt.” An abusive authority may always think that he is in absolute control but the reality is that he is not. God is in absolute control. Thus, evil won’t be perpetual.

A BAD REPUTATION. 
 
Zechariah sat on the throne after Jeroboam II. But his evil reign just lasted for six months. He was assassinated by Shallum, son of Jabesh. And as the great grandson of Jehu, this fulfilled the pronouncement of God to Jehu’s descendants reign to end in the fourth generation. [see 2 Kings 10:30] It gave the impression of God’s accumulated wrath that burst the moment Jehu reigned. 
 
God’s word must be respected. Jehu’s descendants continued to make God angry by their idolatry. They ignored the warning of God. God seemed silent and even had blessed their kingdom until Jehu was assassinated. How many times we take God’s word casually? Then, a backlash happened and it was a little too late to realize our neglect. 
On the other hand, Shallum even reigned in just a month for Menahem, son of Gad, murdered him. He reaped what he had sown. There was nothing to remember in his reign except that he killed his predecessor, Zechariah. A murderer king who was being murdered too. His name is written in the annals of Israel’s history but with a stigma of bad reputation. 
 
How would you like people to remember you? Solomon said, “A good name is better than precious ointment.”[Ecc 7:1a] How long would a sweet smell last? In contrast, a good reputation will continue to linger. May God will help us to finish our task with a good name, thereby giving glory to the Lord.

8 In the thirty-eighth year of Azariah king of Judah, Zechariah the son of Jeroboam reigned over Israel in Samaria six months. 9 And he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, as his fathers had done. FROM LOFTINESS TO LEPROSY 
 
King Azariah [Uzziah], who reigned for 52 years, was one of the longest reigning king in Judah. He was a good king at his early years of reign. “He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, according to all that his father Amaziah had done. He set himself to seek God in the days of Zechariah, who instructed him in the fear of God, and as long as he sought the Lord, God made him prosper.” (2 Chronicles 26:4,5). He was a gifted and innovative king so that his kingdom prospered tremendously. However, he changed during his later years after Zechariah died. until the Lord ‘touched’ him. He became a leper and died in a separate house. In other words, he was alone and isolated. 
 
What has caused his downfall? 
 
Sadly, King Uzziah’s fame and strength had prompted him to become proud.(2 Chron 26:16). He committed an irreverent act by entering into the temple of God in order to burn incense on the altar. Clearly, this was something only the priests could do. By this presumptuous act, he was basically saying he was above the Law.. When he was confronted by the 80 courageous priests, he became furious instead of being broken. He was far from being humble so that God was displeased. Pride, indeed, happens before every fall. [Prov 16:18] 
 
Thus, let’s be warned not to harbor a proud attitude. Why? “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”[1 Pet 5:5] God resists the proud. That is, a proud person is as somebody declaring war with God. Such person is foolhardy thinking that kicking the thorns will hurt it and not himself. The blessings of God could be so glaring to our spiritual eyes. We may lost sight to the Blessor and become proud. And, for being proud, one is hardened and deceived impervious to the voice of God. Simply put, a proud person is spiritually blind and deaf. May God gives us soft hearts always.

He did not depart from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which he made Israel to sin. 25 He restored the border of Israel from Lebo-hamath as far as the Sea of the Arabah, according to the word of the Lord, the God of Israel, which he spoke by his servant Jonah the son of Amittai, the prophet, who was from Gath-hepher. 26 For the Lord saw that the affliction of Israel was very bitter, for there was none left, bond or free, and there was none to help Israel. 27 But the Lord had not said that he would blot out the name of Israel from under heaven, so he saved them by the hand of Jeroboam the son of Joash. 
 
28 Now the rest of the acts of Jeroboam and all that he did, and his might, how he fought, and how he restored Damascus and Hamath to Judah in Israel, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel? 29 And Jeroboam slept with his fathers, the kings of Israel, and Zechariah his son reigned in his place. 
 
THE FAVOR OF GOD 
 
The reign of Jeroboam II was marked with economic prosperity and and political expansion. According D. Guzik, “ Archaeology confirms the economic might of Jeroboam II. In the age prior to Jeroboam II, the houses in Israel’s cities were roughly the same size. But archaeologists find a change starting in the eighth century b.c. – ancient cities like Tirzah have a neighborhood of large, expensive houses and another neighborhood of small, crowded structures, smaller than the houses from previous years. The larger houses are filled with the marks of prosperity, and the oppressive rich of Israel thought they could find safety there – but God’s judgment came against those houses as well (Amos 3:13-15).” 
 
This prosperity was brought about not by their own merit and ability. It was because of God, who had been merciful to the nation. “He restored the border of Israel from Lebo-hamath as far as the Sea of the Arabah, according to the word of the Lord, the God of Israel, which he spoke by his servant Jonah the son of Amittai, the prophet, who was from Gath-hepher. ” There was a re-establishment of the ideal borders of the Northern Israel that existed under Solomon’s reign.[1 Kings 8:65] 
Sadly, there was no moral and spiritual revival during these economic and prosperous times. The prophecy of Amos and Hosea during this time did reveal the spiritual decadence within. Sooner, the nation would be destroyed by the corruption as termites destroy a building from within. 
 
Let’s not be fooled to equate material prosperity equals spiritual blessings always. When man becomes self-sufficient, his spirituality also will decline in most cases. Our sprituality is always associated with our dependence upon Him moment by moment.

7 He struck down ten thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt and took Sela by storm, and called it Joktheel, which is its name to this day. 
 
8 Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz, son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, “Come, let us look one another in the face.” 9 And Jehoash king of Israel sent word to Amaziah king of Judah, “A thistle on Lebanon sent to a cedar on Lebanon, saying, ‘Give your daughter to my son for a wife,’ and a wild beast of Lebanon passed by and trampled down the thistle. 10 You have indeed struck down Edom, and your heart has lifted you up. Be content with your glory, and stay at home, for why should you provoke trouble so that you fall, you and Judah with you?” 
 
11 But Amaziah would not listen. So Jehoash king of Israel went up, and he and Amaziah king of Judah faced one another in battle at Beth-shemesh, which belongs to Judah. 12 And Judah was defeated by Israel, and every man fled to his home. 13 And Jehoash king of Israel captured Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Jehoash, son of Ahaziah, at Beth-shemesh, and came to Jerusalem and broke down the wall of Jerusalem for four hundred cubits, from the Ephraim Gate to the Corner Gate. 14 And he seized all the gold and silver, and all the vessels that were found in the house of the Lord and in the treasuries of the king's house, also hostages, and he returned to Samaria. 
 
THE PERIL OF ARROGANCE 
 
After Amaziah had slaughtered 10,000 Edomites, he challenged the king of Israel Jehoahaz to battle. King Jehoahaz had thought it was a mismatch. He said to Amaziah, “A thistle on Lebanon sent to a cedar on Lebanon.” He told Amaziah, “You have indeed struck down Edom, and your heart has lifted you up. Be content with your glory, and stay at home, for why should you provoke trouble so that you fall, you and Judah with you?” And Amaziah was right for the ten tribes was definitely stronger than Judah. But, Amaziah did not listen. Arrogance causes blindness to our vulnerabilities. 
 
Let’s remember that Amaziah had started his reign well but he became proud. After he conquered the Edomites, he foolishly brought back their gods and sacrificed to them. This idolatry resulted in an unnamed prophet coming to him to rebuke him. Amaziah defiantly resisted, saying to him, “Have we made you a royal counselor? Stop! Why should you be struck down?” (2 Chron 25:16). The prophet refused to be intimidated, however. He told bluntly the proud king, “I know that God has determined to destroy you, because you have done this and have not listened to my counsel.” 
 
“Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” [Prov 16;18] Nothing can be further from the truth. Amaziah having been blinded by his glory had proceeded to fight against King Jehoahaz. He was defeated decisively. Thus, Jehoahaz went to Judah and looted “all the gold and silver, and all the vessels that were found in the house of the Lord and in the treasuries of the king's house, also hostages including king Amaziah, and he returned to Samaria.” 
 
Today, let us not be blinded by our arrogance. Lest we forget, everything that we have is not from us. God’s blessing if seen as God’s gifts won’t make as boastful but humble. Arrogant people are not teachable. Thus, let us check our hearts should we have the tendency to despise counsel from others today.

THE LORD IS GRACIOUS AND MERCIFUL. 
 
In all the days of King Jehoahaz, Israel has experienced continual harassment from King Hazael, king of Syria. The Lord has permitted this not as a punishment but a chastisement to them because they were sinning against God. Punishment is done as an end in itself to those who are not related with Him. On the other hand, chastisement is to discipline an erring person who is related with God. God disciplines His children as a loving parent. Heb 12:7,8 says “It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons.” 
 
The graciousness and mercies of God are results of God’s faithfulness to His covenant to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. God’s dealings with them has been predominantly by His grace and mercies. Jeremiah said, 
“ The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; 
his mercies never come to an end; 
they are new every morning; 
great is your faithfulness. 
“The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, 
“therefore I will hope in him.” [Lam 3:22-23] 
 
But, God’s greatest act of grace and mercy was at the cross. As Paul declared, “For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”[Rom 5:6-8] 
 
Let’s always glory in God’s grace and mercy alone. We are nothing apart from Christ. “He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”[Titus 3:5-7]

20 So Elisha died, and they buried him. Now bands of Moabites used to invade the land in the spring of the year. 21 And as a man was being buried, behold, a marauding band was seen and the man was thrown into the grave of Elisha, and as soon as the man touched the bones of Elisha, he revived and stood on his feet.

20 Namatay si Eliseo at kanilang inilibing siya. Noon ang mga pulutong ng mga Moabita ay laging sumasalakay sa lupain sa panahon ng tagsibol. 21 At habang inililibing ang isang lalaki, kanilang natanaw ang isang sumasalakay na pulutong. At ang lalaki ay naihagis sa libingan ni Eliseo; at nang sumagi ang tao sa mga buto ni Eliseo, siya'y muling nabuhay at tumayo sa kanyang mga paa. 
 
 
LIFE FROM DEATH. 
 
Elisha had died for sometime. What was left in his grave was his bones. Since the graves were carved out of soft rock, it was possible that a dead man was thrown into his grave. This unknown man, perhaps, was mercilessly killed by the marauding band and in a hurry was thrown into Elisha’s grave. 
 
Amazingly, as his dead body touched the bones of Elisha, he became alive again. Elisha though he died for sometime was still became a blessing. Was this because he has the double portion from Elijah. Elijah did not taste death but Elisha, though he died has given life to an unknown man. His name means “God saves”[2 Kings 2:19-25] 
 
Elisha was mentioned only once in New Testament , particularly in Luke 4:27, “And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.” Jesus did this analogy with Elisha in healing the sick, specially the lepers. Implicitly, he was a type of Jesus. 
 
Bruce Waltke, writing in Ligonier Magazine about the parallels between Elisha and Jesus: 
 
Both are designated by a prophet, whom the general populace recognized as a true prophet. Both receive the Spirit on the other side of the Jordan (2 Kings 2:7–15; John 1:28); 
• are surrounded by more disciples than their predecessors; 
• are itinerant miracle workers; 
• give life in a land of death; 
• cleanse lepers (2 Kings 5; Mark 1:40–45); 
• heal the sick (2 Kings 4:34–35; Mark 8:22–25); 
• defy gravity (2 Kings 6:6; Matt. 14:22–33); 
• reverse death by raising dead sons and restoring them to their mothers (2 Kings 4: 1–7; Luke 7:11–17); 
• help widows in desperate circumstances; are kinsman redeemers to save from slavery (2 Kings 4:1–7; Luke 4:19); 
• feed the hungry (2 Kings 4:1–7; Mark 8:1–12); 
• minister to the Gentiles (2 Kings 5:1–16);

2 Kings 13:20-21 ESV

20 So Elisha died, and they buried him. Now bands of Moabites used to invade the land in the spring of the year. 21 And as a man was being buried, behold, a marauding band was seen and the man was thrown into the grave of Elisha, and as soon as the man touched the bones of Elisha, he revived and stood on his feet.

LIFE FROM DEATH.

Elisha had died for sometime. What was left in his grave was his bones. Since the graves were carved out of soft rock, it was possible that a dead man was thrown into his grave. This unknown man, perhaps, was mercilessly killed by the marauding band

And Elisha laid his hands on the king's hands. 17 And he said, “Open the window eastward,” and he opened it. Then Elisha said, “Shoot,” and he shot. And he said, “The Lord's arrow of victory, the arrow of victory over Syria! For you shall fight the Syrians in Aphek until you have made an end of them.” 18 And he said, “Take the arrows,” and he took them. And he said to the king of Israel, “Strike the ground with them.” And he struck three times and stopped. 19 Then the man of God was angry with him and said, “You should have struck five or six times; then you would have struck down Syria until you had made an end of it, but now you will strike down Syria only three times.” 
 
THE LORD’S ARROW OF VICTORY 
 
When Elisha was sick and dying, King Joash of Israel came to him weeping. He felt pathetic about the dwindling chariots and armies of Israel. He cried, “My father, my father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen.” How could they fight against Syria if the prophet Elisha would be gone? He never had felt so helpless. 
 
The ailing prophet commanded him to draw the bow, open the window. He has to shoot the arrow eastward to the direction of Syria. And he has to lay his hands to the king’s hand when he will shoot the arrow. Then Elisha said, “Shoot,” and he shot. And he said, “The Lord's arrow of victory, the arrow of victory over Syria! For you shall fight the Syrians in Aphek until you have made an end of them.” 
 
 
Immediately after, he instructed Joash to grab the arrows and struck the ground with them. He was angry with Joash because he only did it three times. Why? He argued, “You should have struck five or six times; then you would have struck down Syria until you had made an end of it, but now you will strike down Syria only three times.” 
 
God never fails. Interestingly, the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, that is: “Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh. Is anything too hard for me?[Jer 32:27] For His promises are backed up by His incomparable power to fulfill it. Thus, failure is always on our side in not taking His promises at face value. “God is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us.”[Eph 3:20] And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.[Heb 11:6] 
 
Similarly, the Lord has promised Mary the unimaginable – to become a mother when she was a virgin. The only assurance is the word from the angel, that is, “For nothing will be impossible with God.”[Luke 1:37] Unlike king Joash she believed and yielded wholeheartedly to the Lord, saying, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”[Luke 1:38]

2 Kings 13:1-9 ESV 
 
In the twenty-third year of Joash the son of Ahaziah, king of Judah, Jehoahaz the son of Jehu began to reign over Israel in Samaria, and he reigned seventeen years. 2 He did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and followed the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which he made Israel to sin; he did not depart from them. 3 And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he gave them continually into the hand of Hazael king of Syria and into the hand of Ben-hadad the son of Hazael. 4 Then Jehoahaz sought the favor of the Lord, and the Lord listened to him, for he saw the oppression of Israel, how the king of Syria oppressed them. 5 (Therefore the Lord gave Israel a savior, so that they escaped from the hand of the Syrians, and the people of Israel lived in their homes as formerly. 6 Nevertheless, they did not depart from the sins of the house of Jeroboam, which he made Israel to sin, but walked in them; and the Asherah also remained in Samaria.) 7 For there was not left to Jehoahaz an army of more than fifty horsemen and ten chariots and ten thousand footmen, for the king of Syria had destroyed them and made them like the dust at threshing. 8 Now the rest of the acts of Jehoahaz and all that he did, and his might, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel? 9 So Jehoahaz slept with his fathers, and they buried him in Samaria, and Joash his son reigned in his place. 
 
TAKING GOD’S GOODNESS FOR GRANTED 
 
Jehoahaz assumed the throne of Israel after his father Jehu died. Previously, the Lord promised to Jehu, “Because you have done well in carrying out what is right in my eyes, and have done to the house of Ahab according to all that was in my heart, your sons of the fourth generation shall sit on the throne of Israel.”[2 Kings 7:30] This was God’s favor to his clan. But his son Jehoahaz did evil. Thus, there was a divine punishment in the form of Syrian invasions. It was so severe that it reduces the army of Jehoahaz so insubstantial like ‘a dust at the threshing time’. 
 
But, the Lord did not abandon Israel. Although, Jehoahaz was an idolater, he pleaded for God’s favor who saved them. This was out of desperation. And, God provided an unnamed savior. In other words, God was gracious to them. However, His graciousness had made no difference to Israel’s outlook. They continued in their sins and re-introduced the worship of Asherah which Jehu destroyed. Impliedly, they asked God’s help only when they needed help and only for their own selfish ends. 
 
 
Certainly, he and the nation were hardened by sin to become unconscionable. For the evil they had done, they deserve judgment. But, God saw how they suffered from the Syrian’s oppression. Unlike them, you and I should not take God’s goodness for granted, should we? Paul said, “Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance? 5 But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God's righteous judgment will be revealed.”[Rom 2:4]

2 Kings 12:9-16 ESV 
9 Then Jehoiada the priest took a chest and bored a hole in the lid of it and set it beside the altar on the right side as one entered the house of the Lord. And the priests who guarded the threshold put in it all the money that was brought into the house of the Lord. 10 And whenever they saw that there was much money in the chest, the king's secretary and the high priest came up and they bagged and counted the money that was found in the house of the Lord. 11 Then they would give the money that was weighed out into the hands of the workmen who had the oversight of the house of the Lord. And they paid it out to the carpenters and the builders who worked on the house of the Lord, 12 and to the masons and the stonecutters, as well as to buy timber and quarried stone for making repairs on the house of the Lord, and for any outlay for the repairs of the house. 13 But there were not made for the house of the Lord basins of silver, snuffers, bowls, trumpets, or any vessels of gold, or of silver, from the money that was brought into the house of the Lord, 14 for that was given to the workmen who were repairing the house of the Lord with it. 15 And they did not ask for an accounting from the men into whose hand they delivered the money to pay out to the workmen, for they dealt honestly. 16 The money from the guilt offerings and the money from the sin offerings was not brought into the house of the Lord; it belonged to the priests. 
 
THE FAITHFUL AND HONEST WORKMEN 
 
In obedience to the king, the High Priest Jehoiada placed “a chest and bored a hole in the lid of it and set it beside the altar on the right side as one entered the house of the Lord.” It was in a public place so that it was accesible and free from any suspicion of foul play. The priests guarded the chest. And, whenever the chest was almost full of money, the king's secretary and the high priest came up and they bagged and counted the money. Immediately, they would give the money that was weighed out into the hands of the workmen who had the oversight of the house of the Lord. And they paid it out to the carpenters and the builders who worked on the house of the Lord, and to the masons and the stonecutters, as well as to buy timber and quarried stone for making repairs on the house of the Lord, and for any outlay for the repairs of the house. These money was spent purely for the building repair so that they did not but accessories, such as basins of silver, snuffers, bowls, trumpets, or any vessels of gold, or of silver. 
 
And it must be noted that they did not ask for an accounting from the men into whose hand they delivered the money to pay out to the workmen. Why? It is because they dealt honestly. Definitely, trust is given to honest people. People should not be given a task in order to make them faithful but because they were found earlier as faithful. 
 
 
Thus, faithfulness is seen in the track record of the person. Did not Jesus say, “One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much. If then you have not been faithful in the unrighteous wealth, who will entrust to you the true riches? And if you have not been faithful in that which is another's, who will give you that which is your own? [Luke 16:10-12] 
 
The work progressed well because the job of the repair was given to the right people, that is, with carpentry and masonry skills. More than that, they were faithful and honest. Effective and efficient people of God has these two inseparable traits as the two wings of a plane needed in order to fly. Faithful and honest men are diligent. 
 
Are we not God’s workmen to build His kingdom in this world?[Eph 4:12] We are even refered as ambassadors of Christ.[2 Cor 5:20] And, in edifying the church Peter said, “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace: whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.”[1 Pet 4:10-11]

2 Kings 12:1-3 ESV 
 
In the seventh year of Jehu, Jehoash began to reign, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Zibiah of Beersheba. 2 And Jehoash did what was right in the eyes of the Lord all his days, because Jehoiada the priest instructed him. 3 Nevertheless, the high places were not taken away; the people continued to sacrifice and make offerings on the high places.

Nang ikapitong taon ni Jehu, nagsimulang maghari si Jehoas at siya'y naghari sa loob ng apatnapung taon sa Jerusalem. Ang pangalan ng kanyang ina ay Sibia na taga-Beer-seba. 2 Gumawa si Jehoas ng matuwid sa mga mata ng Panginoon sa lahat ng kanyang araw, sapagkat tinuruan siya ni Jehoiada na pari. 3 Gayunma'y ang mga mataas na dako ay hindi inalis; ang mga tao ay patuloy na naghandog at nagsunog ng insenso sa mga mataas na dako. 
 
A GODLY INFLUENCE. 
 
Jehoash [or Joash] was seven years old when he was proclaimed as the new king of Judah. He inherited a damaged kingdom because of her predecessor, her evil grandmother Athaliah. It’s unimaginable that she even killed all her grandsons except Joash. She was so obssessed to erase the royal family line. This was in no doubt the devil working in and through her. But, by God’s providence Joash was spared from her evil acts because her Aunt Jehosheba and her husband, Jehoiada the high priest, hid him. 
 
Joash was orphaned and young when he assumed the throne. How did he rule rightly before the eyes of the Lord? It was because of Jehoiada, who nurtured him. He was instrumental in molding the life of the young king. When Joash was at the age of seven, Jehoiada crowned him before the people as the new king. And correspondingly, he ordered the killing of Athaliah. Most importantly, he rallied the people to make “a covenant between the Lord and the king and people, that they should be the Lord's people, and also between the king and the people.”[2 Kings 11:17] 
 
Jehoash had a godly nurture from a godly high priest Jehoiada. He became who he was because of his mentor. And, Jehoiada had played his role faithfully, without ulterior motives. He was incharge in the spiritual training of his nephew but did not usurp his role. In fact, he ran the show but saw to it that it was Joash who was recognized as the king. That is, Jehoash had to be a godly king. Like Jehoash, nobody has become a great leader by himself. It is because he is surrounded by godly people around. 
 
What the psalmist David had declared is true, that is, “For my father and my mother have forsaken me, but the Lord will take me in.” [Psa 27:10] “A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling.”[Psa 68:5] In the case of of the helpless Jehoash, it was Jehoiada whom God used to help him to become the king God wanted him to be. 
 
Thus today, you and I could be a “Jehoiada” to a young Christian in order for him to grow and reach his potential in Christ. Have we realized that Christians are “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.”? [1 Pet 2:9] Or, we could be like “Jehoash” who need a godly mentor. Let’s be teachable under their tutelage so that we will continue to grow and behave as kings in Christ.
