- We generally, and unintentionally, break all of life down into two categories: things we have to do, and things we want to do. The things we want to do, for most of us, are the real reasons for living – vacations, or free time at the end of the day, or trips and time outdoors, hunting, fishing, those sorts of things. We can feel like those wants give life meaning. They add gas to the tank. The things we have to do, however, they have the opposite effect: things like taking the trash out, doing homework, school, going to work, disciplining our children – these things take gas out. We have created this sort of system in our lives with all sorts of things. But what I would like to do today is ask you one simple question: do spiritual things fall into the want to category, or the have to category?
