Romans 2:14-16 “Secrets exposed”

God’s judgment will come on those who presume on His kindness rather than 
responding in repentance. 
 God’s Kindness 
o Forbearance and patience are ways God shows His kindness to mankind. “Forbearance” is like 
a temporary truce that could change at any moment. “Patience” is 
o While Paul highlights for us God’s forbearance and patience here, God’s kindness includes so 
much more (Common Grace). 
o God’s kindness is given to us for a purpose. That purpose is not just so that we might have fun 
or make the most of the things we’ve been given. God’s kindness is supposed to lead us to 
repentance. God’s patience and forbearance give us opportunity to turn from our sins and be 
cleansed by Him. 
 Man’s Presumption 
 
Romans 2:4-5

o Instead of being led to repentance, the response of the religious, moral person is to presume on 
God’s kindness. These folks assume that God will show this same kindness to them forever. 
They do not know (or ignore) that the proper response to God’s kindness is to repent and turn 
from their sins. 
o The Jews would have thought that their status as “God’s Chosen People” would have meant 
God would always show favor to them, but not so. 
o Even believers can be guilty of presuming on God’s kindness. Have you ever thought about 
committing a sin and thought “Well, God will forgive me if I ask Him.” That’s presumption. 
o Ultimately, making presumptions about God’s character is to reduce God down to something 
less than a person. If God were just a set of rules or a simple exchange, then we could presume 
on his kindness, but God is so much more than that. 
 God’s Judgment 
o Last chapter focused on how God gave people over to their sins as part of his judgment. In this 
chapter, Paul focuses more on the final day of judgment 
o “Storing up” is normally used about good things, but Paul uses it here to describe people who 
are

God’s judgment will come on those who presume on His kindness rather than

The things we want to do, for most of us, are the real reasons for living – vacations, or free time at the end of the day, or trips and time outdoors, hunting, fishing, those sorts of things. We can feel like those wants give life meaning. They add gas to the tank. The things we have to do, however, they have the opposite effect: things like taking the trash out, doing homework, school, going to work, disciplining our children – these things take gas out. We have created this sort of system in our lives with all sorts of things. But what I would like to do today is ask you one simple question: do spiritual things fall into the want to category, or the have to category?
