This is the scripture we most associate with the celebration of Christmas. We love this story because it gives us a picture of what was happening in the world and the need that we have for a Savior. This chapter puts it all in context for us and helps us understand the greatness of God in meeting our greatest need. 
 
 A decree went out from Caesar Augustus. Who was Caesar Augustus? Many consider him the greatest of all the Caesars. He was chosen by Julius Caesar to succeed him when he adopted him in his will. He was born by the name Octavian which simply means, “Eighth,” but because he had been adopted by Julius Caesar, he was given the name Gaius Julius Caesar Octavian. However, the title of “Emperor” was not enough, so the Senate sought a more regal title for him. "King" was not sufficient, so the title Augustus was chosen for him, which means, “Majestic Grandeur.” The Roman senate voted that he was a god. They even named a month on the calendar after him – August. 
 
Among Roman rulers, only Julius Caesar and Augustus had months named after them permanently —though this wasn't for lack of trying on the part of later emperors. For a time, May was changed to the month of Claudius and the infamous Nero tried to April to Neronius. But these changes were short-lived, and only Julius and Augustus have had two-millennia-worth of staying power. 
 
To God Almighty, however, the great Caesar Augustus would have been just "Little Caesar." God used him for His purposes; to move Mary in her third trimester to Bethlehem so the prophesies of Christ’s birth would be fulfilled. Jesus, seemingly born in obscurity, would be the Savior of the world, but what was to become of Little Caesar? 
 
Isaiah 40:17, 23-24, All the nations are as nothing before Him, they are regarded by Him as less than nothing and meaningless… It is He who reduces rulers to nothing, who makes the judges of the earth meaningless. Scarcely have they been planted, scarcely have they been sown, scarcely has their stock taken root in the earth, and He merely blows on them, and they wither, and the storm carries them away like stubble. 
 
 When you see God moving through declarations of an Emperor that causes a terrible inconvenience to a very pregnant young woman not wanting to travel, but needs to travel in order to fulfill the prophecies and purposes of God, it helps us understand that God works supernaturally through natural means. 
 
 These verses in Luke chapter 2 are a reminder again that God is answering man's greatest need in bringing light to a lost, lonely, and broken world.

This morning we celebrate the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ.  Our text is Galatians 4:4-7, which ushers us into a story, a true story, of the history of God’s redemptive plans culminating with the birth of Christ, but not stopping there.  Christmas is Christ’s first step to the cross.   We can’t separate them from each other.  At the heart of the Gospel is an adoption.  One pays the cost that the adopted could never pay, but in so doing the adopted is welcomed into a new family with full rights as heirs.  This is the family of God and our identity is radically shaped through Christ’s birth, born of a woman, born under the law, and his purpose, to redeem those under the law, that we might have adoption as sons.

Luke 2,1-14 
 “And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Cesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.” 
 
This chapter deals with My birth, a day you celebrate each year on December 25th in accordance with the rites of the church. 
You are already familiar with the events at the time of My birth, but there are still many unclear points concerning this act of My first visible appearance on your earth, the deeper meaning of which, in its spiritual correspondence, is still unknown to you. Therefore, I shall make further revelations for your benefit, as well as that of My believing children of the future, to show you that even the smallest thing concerning Me and My coming to the earth is of the greatest significance and will repeat itself on My Second Coming to this small globe, the dwelling place of My children who will be great one day. 
 
As the conditions on earth once made it necessary for that particular people at that particular time to witness the great act of grace and love which I accomplished for you and all the spirit world, on My Second Visible Coming a time and place will again be chosen to suit My purpose best. 
 
You were right in calling this feast “Holy Night”. It was, indeed, a hallowed night when I consecrated Myself for your sake and that of all material creation as an offering of meekness, when I, the infinite Lord of the entire creation, put on a fragile, perishable garment, which among millions of beings on other worlds, as far as its outer appearance is concerned, is far beneath the supreme archetype of a human image. Many inhabitants of other worlds are endowed so richly that man of this earth appears to be only a weak imitation of that which I put into this form as an image of My own Self. And yet, although the dwellers on other globes surpass men of this earth in many ways, spiritually the latter are destined for something infinitely greater than the dwellers in paradise-like worlds and suns. Although they enjoy an eternal spring and live in conditions you cannot even imagine, they lack a clear comprehension of Me, of My spiritual creation and My fatherly love. 
 
They are good, because no evil endeavours to induce them to the contrary. They recognize a Supreme Being and kneel before Him in awe, but none of them dares to think that this Supreme Being might wish to press any of His created beings to His fatherly heart and give it the sweet name of a child.

Growing up, my parents, never did the Santa thing. 
 
So after my wife and I were married and had our first child, we needed to make the decision whether or not we would adopt the Santa Claus tradition in our family. Like most parents, we’d do just about anything to bring joy, awe and amazement into the lives of our little ones. After all, what harm could it do? 
 
But here’s the deal, in order for our children believe in Santa Claus, they would have to believe that Santa Claus, lives in the North Pole, for that least the last 1000 years. So Santa is, Eternal. He delivers gifts to all the children in the world on December 24th. So Santa is, near Omnipresent. He knows every child by name, and he knows whether they have been, Naughty or Nice. So Santa is, All-knowing. And he himself, must be Fully Good. Lastly, Santa enables his Reindeer to fly. So he must be, All-powerful. 
 
Those are just a few examples of what our kids would need to believe. As it turns out, Santa Claus, is not just a single little white lie, it is one lie after another. And the more questions our kids would inevitably ask, the more lies we would need to tell them, to maintain the first. 
 
Obviously, the Bible is clear when it comes to lies: “You shall not lie to one another.” So, while the Santa tradition is cute, the boldfaced lies we would have to tell our kids year after year make it a tradition we couldn’t adopt. 
 
But as it turns out, even Without Santa, the joy, awe, and amazement of Christmas isn’t lost, instead it’s focused on the one who is Eternal, Omnipresent, All-knowing, Fully Good, and All-powerful, our Savior who’s birth and love we celebrate as a family. 
 
For us, Jesus really is the reason for the season.
