When we think of Christmas, we think of angels, shepherds, wise men, Mary and, of course, Jesus. But what about Joseph? Today's message considers what this often overlooked saint can teach us.

1. Do you want to receive the best gift from God this Christmas?

2. Whose descendant was Joseph? King David 
What was Mary’s condition? 
 =she was full term of pregnant 
Why did Joseph and Mary travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem? 2:1-4 
 =they needed to register at their hometown 
How far is from Nazareth to Bethlehem? 
 =70 miles or 110km 
 =actually 90 miles 
 =Mary’s condition slow down their speed 
 =they carried many things for a baby 
By what means do you think Mary traveled?

Who in all of Israel knew of the birth of the Savior? 
 =No one knew it 
 =Jesus was born with inhuman condition such as shame and pain 
 
5. To whom did an angel of the Lord appear? 2:9 
=And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, 
 and they were filled with great fear. 
Around whom did the glory of the Lord shine? 2:9 
 =God’s presence to shepherds 
How did the shepherds react to the glory of the Lord? 2:9 
 =they were filled with great fear 
 =God is extremely holy. 
What kind of people were the shepherds? 2:8 
 =they were hard workers. They were with sheep 
 =low class people 
 =actually, people don’t want to have time together. 
 
 
6. What did the angel say to the shepherds? 2:10-12 
a. Fear not=don’t be afraid 
b. What is the good news of great joy to you and to all people? 
=Jesus came to this word as a baby to save us from the sin. 
c. What does Savior mean? 
=every person need a savior 
=No way out, they need a savior 
=savior is solid 
d. What does Christ the Lord mean? 
=savior has been born 
e. What sign did the angel give to verify his message? 2:12 
=And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger 
f. Why could this baby in a manger be a sign? 
=no one was born in a manger but Jesus 
g. What does the birth of a Savior mean to you? 
=Jesus saved us from manger 
=Jesus saved me from all kinds of problems 
 
7. Describe the chorus of the heavenly host. 2:13,14 
=many angels 
=great celebration in heaven 
=John 2:13-14 
=Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased! 
What was going on in heaven? 
 
8. After the angel went away to heaven what did the shepherds decide to do? 2:15 
=Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made know to us 
How do you think they searched for the baby at night in Bethlehem? 2:16 
=No GPS, they were knocking the doors and searched a baby 
Why weren’t they disappointed by the shameful and poor condition of the baby? 2:17 
=they made know the saying that had been told them concerning this child 
How did their faith and joy spread to others? 2:17, 18, 19, 20 
=confirm the word of God-17 
=spread-18 
=Mary treasured up-19 
=shepherds had joyful heart like a child-20 
 
9. Why do you think God chose the shepherds among all Israel to reveal the Savior’s birth? 
=because shepherd are doer 
=listen and take action.

Boksoon Kim Bible Study Luke 2:1-20 the Birth of Jesus Christ

Everything we do at Westside is centred on knowing Jesus and making Jesus known. Christ's great commission is for His disciples to go out and make disciples (Matthew 28:18-19). In Jesus' parable of the Great Banquet (Luke 14), He tells us to go out and compel as many people as possible to come to His Father's banqueting table so that His house may be full. There is no denying that our clear calling as the global church is to make Jesus known to those who don't know Him. But making Jesus known at Westside isn't simply tied into missions and evangelism, for knowing Jesus isn't a one-time act but an ongoing process -- what God begins, He completes (Romans 8:30 and Philippians 1:7). And the fact is, Jesus calls us to disciple-making, not convert--making; but that said, the role of any disciple is calling others to follow Jesus.

The genealogy of Jesus that Matthew records expands on three specific titles for Jesus and the promises associated with them. For the 3rd Sunday in a row, we are in Luke’s Gospel, chapter 1, cherry-picking (if you will) some of the ripest, sweetest, most beautiful fruit to be savored from the ever-fruitful Christmas Story. 
 
On the 1st Sunday of Advent, we climbed a short ladder to reach a very simple phrase spoken by Angel Gabriel to young Mary as he prophesied to her about her Most Extraordinary Child, namely, that “He Shall Be Grrrrrreat!” 
 
On the 2nd Sunday of Advent, we climbed a little higher to personally apply Mary’s jubilant praise as she met her pregnant cousin Elizabeth who provided triple confirmation for her that everything Gabriel had said was absolutely true, causing Mary to joyfully exclaim, “My soul Magnifies the Lord!” 
 
Today is the 3rd Sunday of Advent and we turn to yet another prominent player in the same chapter, Zachariah the Priest (Elizabeth’s husband), who is about to become the father of John the Baptist. When Angel Gabriel told him about his wife’s pregnancy, he questioned it. He doubted. He asked too many questions and as a result, Gabriel pressed the “mute button” on Zachariah’s mouth – he couldn’t speak another word! At least, not until after Elizabeth gave birth to John. Only then did God restore his speech. And when He did, Zachariah too explodes with a jubilant song of praise, including these marvelous words: 
 
76 And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; 
 for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him, 
77 to give his people the knowledge of salvation 
 through the forgiveness of their sins, 
78 because of the tender mercy of our God, 
 by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven 
79 to shine on those living in darkness 
 and in the shadow of death, 
to guide our feet into the path of peace.” 
 
If you read carefully, you will see precisely what God will be accomplishing through the advent of Jesus Christ His Son. God is being God when He is showing mercy, pardoning sins and saving His people through His “Tender Mercy”.

Today we are considering the 10th Commandment: You shall not covet. (Exodus 20:17) We are right in the middle of the Christmas season which, around the world is an unparalleled time of marketing and advertising to ramp up desire and encourage people to shop till they drop and get what is trending and popular – this is an incredibly relevant, but also challenging and a counter culture topic. It is important to remember the context of these commandments in the deliverance of Israel from slavery in Egypt as they are given a foundation for a great life as they are to now live as the people of God. God was not being a kill joy. He was giving them commands for their good. How much more, as delivered people through Jesus Christ are we to live lives that show forth the love of God in our world.
