The Firstborn Son of God Is Our Redemption from Sin and Death 
When the Lord destroyed the firstborn sons of Egypt, He spared the sons of Israel by providing a lamb in their stead. Hence, all the firstborn sons belong to Him. Every firstborn male animal was sacrificed, and every firstborn son of man was redeemed (Ex. 13:12--13). Therefore, the parents of Jesus "brought Him up to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord" (Luke 2:22). However, He is not redeemed from priestly service but is consecrated for "the redemption of Jerusalem" and "the consolation of Israel" (Luke 2:25, 38). For God the Father did not spare His only-begotten Son, but offered Him up as the true Passover Lamb, in order to redeem His people from bondage. His Cross has caused many to stumble and fall, but His blood atoned for the sins of the world and delivers us from death. We now depart in the peace of Christ because we are also raised with Him. As we receive His body and blood, we join Simeon and Anna in "giving thanks to God the Father through Him," "singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs," including the Nunc Dimittis, with thankfulness in our hearts (Luke 2:28--32, 38; Col. 3:15--17).

I'm planning on recording a video soon with cello after I've had some time to mess around with it, as I now have one through hilariously odd circumstance (suffice it to say, I am immensely glad I won't be linking myself to that petulant mental instability anymore). In the meantime, watch me almost cry while playing John Darnielle. Christmastime is always so stressful to me for a number of reasons, and this year has been a tough one, with the past week counting among the most batshit of all weeks I've experienced this year - the relief that it's over is deafening. I hope all of you have had pleasant winter celebrations of any number of varieties, religious or otherwise. Special thanks to Sidney LaPorte, and Hannah and Vassie Hollamon for letting me stay at your house this past weekend and not minding me playing your piano and drinking your whiskey. I'm intent on repaying my immeasurable debt to the three of you with homemade chocolates and caramels.

The nation is still recovering, ever so slowly, from last week's shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Funerals for the victims continue on, and people argue vehemently over gun control. During a season when people are usually driving to the mall, shopping, baking, hosting Christmas parties, and singing "Joy to the word, the Lord is come!" not many are feeling very "'tis the season to be jolly...fa la la la la, la la la la." 
 
Yet the Bible tells us that the angel said, "Don't be afraid! I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people." Real joy. Joy that is above and beyond our most difficult circumstances. Don't you want that joy? Well we will talk about it this Sunday...not just that it exists, but how to bridge the gap between what we sing and what we see. God wants to give us real joy this Christmas, and if you join us Sunday and bring along friends and family, we will be swimming in it! We hope to see you there.
