The Lord Jesus Is Found in the Temple of His Church 
 
The Lord Jesus “grew and became strong” (Luke 2:40); He “increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man” (Luke 2:52). As His body grew and developed, His mind also increased in knowledge and understanding. For as our brother in the flesh, that we might “have redemption through his blood” (Eph. 1:7), He lived by faith in the Word of His Father. Thus, He was catechized by His parents, who took Him up “to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover” (Luke 2:41); when He was of age, He gave attention to the Holy Scriptures in His Father’s house (Luke 2:46, 49). Christ Jesus is still found in His Church, in “the word of truth, the gospel,” by which we are adopted by His Father and sealed with His Spirit (Eph. 1:5, 13). Thus do we gain “an understanding mind” to go about our vocations, discerning “between good and evil” (1 Kings 3:9). And so do we also go up to Jerusalem, to stand “before the ark of the covenant of the Lord” (1 Kings 3:15), that is, in the Holy Communion of His body and blood

You’ve probably returned a gift at some point. That’s what gift receipts are for. The giver of the gift is giving you the option to pick a gift that is more to your liking or more useful to you. Ironically, the gift that Christmas is actually all about is one you don’t want to return. 
 
We live in a world where sin can divide people along so many lines: ethnicity and race, rich and poor, red states and blue states, etc. The only dividing line Jesus cares about is the one that separated sinful mankind from a holy God. By his death and resurrection, he removed that line and united all believers into one kingdom. And now we can share that message, too. Jesus truly is the gift not to exchange. He is the light for all people.

Now Elizabeth's full time came for her to be delivered, and she brought forth a son. When her neighbors and relatives heard how the Lord had shown great mercy to her, they rejoiced with her. 
So it was, on the eighth day, that they came to circumcise the child; and they would have called him by the name of his father, Zacharias. His mother answered and said, "No; he shall be called John." 
But they said to her, "There is no one among your relatives who is called by this name." So they made signs to his father--what he would have him called. 
And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, saying, "His name is John." So they all marveled. Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, praising God. Then fear came on all who dwelt around them; and all these sayings were discussed throughout all the hill country of Judea. And all those who heard them kept them in their hearts, saying, "What kind of child will this be?" And the hand of the Lord was with him. 
Now his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying: 
 "Blessed is the Lord God of Israel, 
 For He has visited and redeemed His people, 
 And has raised up a horn of salvation for us 
 In the house of His servant David, 
 As He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets, 
 Who have been since the world began,

Disciples should 
embrace the sacrifice of Christ, 
embody sanctification and 
engage with forgiveness. 
 
Disciples should embrace the sacrifice of Christ. 
Hebrews 10:5-9 
 
• We should embrace Jesus’ bodily sacrifice. 10:5-6 
5 Therefore, when He comes into the world, He says, 
“Sacrifice and offering You have not desired, 
But a body You have prepared for Me; 
6 In whole burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin You have taken no pleasure. 
 
• We should embrace Jesus’ obedient sacrifice. 10:7 
7 “Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come 
(In the scroll of the book it is written of Me) 
To do Your will, O God.’ ” 
 
• We should embrace Jesus’ New Covenant sacrifice. 10:8-9 
8 After saying above, “Sacrifices and offerings and whole burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin You have not desired, nor have You taken pleasure in them” (which are offered according to the Law), 
9 then He said, “Behold, I have come to do Your will.” He takes away the first in order to establish the second. 
 
Disciples should embody sanctification from Christ. Hebrews 10:10-13 
 
• We should embody sanctification that is complete. 10:10 
10 By this will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. 
 
• We should embody sanctification, awaiting enemy defeat. 10:11-13 
11 Every priest stands daily ministering and offering time after time the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins; 
12 but He, having offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, sat down at the right hand of God, 
13 waiting from that time onward until His enemies be made a footstool for His feet. 
 
Disciples should engage with forgiveness. 
Hebrews 10:14-18 
 
• We should engage with perfection. 10:14 
14 For by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified. 
 
• We should engage with the promise. 10:15-17 
15 And the Holy Spirit also testifies to us; for after saying, 
16 “This is the covenant that I will make with them 
After those days, says the Lord: 
I will put My laws upon their heart, 
And on their mind I will write them,” 
He then says, 
17 “And their sins and their lawless deeds 
I will remember no more.” 
 
• We should engage with His provision. 10:18 
18 Now where there is forgiveness of these things, there is no longer any offering for sin.
