a. A Christian marriage is one of exclusive, lifelong devotion. 
b. Song of Solomon calls us back to God's holy purpose for marriage and the family. 
7) True Love (Song of Sol. 8:4-7) 
a. Defraud ye not one the other, except it be with consent for a time, that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again, that Satan tempt you not for your incontinency. ~ I Cor. 7:5 
b. "wilderness" -- a place of testing, but also a place where love can grow stronger as a result of being tested. (Hosea 2:14-16) 
c. True love is an unquenchable flame that comes from the Lord Himself, i.e., be a God-centered spouse.

How am I trying to attain wisdom? 
1) Guide to Wisdom (1:1-6) 
a. The Book of Proverbs fulfils an important purpose; it sets forth God's wisdom for His people. 
b. Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding. ~ Proverbs 4:7 
c. Defn: proverb -- "a comparison" or "an ethical teaching" (Hebrew) 
d. Purpose of Proverbs -- four aspects. 
2) Key to Knowledge (1:7) 
a. The Book of Proverbs is wisdom that comes by living in right relationship with our Maker and Redeemer through faith in Jesus Christ and by submitting daily to His lordship in every area of life. The "fear of the LORD": 
i. God is the perfectly holy and loving Father-figure each of as longs to have in our lives. 
ii. Our joy in His presence and our awareness of His authority form a healthy reverence for Him in our lives. 
iii. This awe, or reverent fear, grows as we know Him better, love Him more, and give ourselves to Him more completely. 
iv. Being wise must start with surrendering to God, or it doesn't start at all. 
b. The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good. ~ Psalms 14:1 
3) Admonition to Learn (1:8-9) 
a. We are to pay close attention to parental guidance. 
4) Warning against Folly (1:10-19) 
a. (vs. 11) Notice the strategy: "Come with us,..."

How can the Spirit help me exalt Jesus amid the problems I'm facing? 
1) When Testimony Meets Hostility (15:26 -- 16:4) 
a. The Holy Spirit emboldens us as believers when we testify about Jesus. 
b. "offended" --- causes unfruitfulness. "Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended." ~ Matthew 13:21 
2) When Sorrow Fills the Heart (16:5-7) 
a. The Holy Spirit comforts us in times of sorrow.

3) When Satan Seems in Control (16:8-11) 
a. Satan -- god of this world. "In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them." ~ II Cor. 4:4 
b. Holy Spirit "reproves" using the scriptures. "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:" ~ II Timothy 3:16 
c. Of sin --- at the core is unbelief 
d. Of righteousness --- "to be right with, to be in right standing with God, who is holy and just." 
e. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth. ~ Rom. 10:4 
f. Of judgment --- Satan is judged, only awaiting divine sentencing. "Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:" ~ Matthew 25:41 
4) When More Understanding Is Needed (16:12-15) 
a. Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. ~ John 17:17 
b. "and he will show you things to come" 
i. The Spirit will help Christians prepare for and recognize end-time events. 
ii. The Spirit unfolds to us truth and spiritual experience that "round out" the Christian life here and now. 
c. All three Persons of the Godhead are perfectly in sync as they reveal God's plan of redemption. 
d. The Holy Spirit helps us understand, apply, and tell others the whole truth about Jesus.

a. Believers enjoy the awesome privilege of introducing others to Jesus as Savior. 
b. Jesus commissioned us to do this. (Matthew 28:19) 
c. He promised the Spirit would empower us. 
d. (vs. 3) Keep moving, i.e. go to the next family member, friend, neighbor, stranger, etc. 
e. (vs. 4) Go to places where there are people who need to hear the gospel. 
f. Yea, so have I strived to preach the gospel, not where Christ was named, lest I should build upon another man's foundation: ~ Romans 15:20 
2) Engage (4:6-9) 
a. Jacob's well -- gathering places. 
b. Is she/he open to conversation? 
c. Respectfully engage people as precious individuals whom God loves. (Romans 2:11) 
d. Our respect and kindness doesn't mean that we approve of sinful lifestyles, but that we're willing to show Christian love. 
e. We must trust the Holy Spirit to break down our (their) barriers of fear, prejudice and distrust. 
3) Clarify (4:10-15,25-26) 
a. Use the circumstances around you, e.g., nursing home (Ps.23), hospital visit (flowers). 
b. Be creative, build curiosity. 
c. (vs. 15) Too often, in our day people seem to want Jesus to change their circumstances rather than to change their hearts.

1) Are You Interested? (3:1-3) 
a. And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine: 
For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes ~ Matt. 7:28-29 
b. Like Nicodemus, many people... 
i. Have curiosity, caused by what they've seen or heard in others, but by itself that does not lead to saving faith. 
ii. Display intense spiritual hunger mixed with distressing spiritual blindness. 
iii. Have human understanding (knowledge), but is not divine transformation. 
2) Do You Have Questions? (3:4-9) 
a. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. ~ Romans 8:11 
b. The wind illustrates the Spirit's marvelous work of regeneration: 
i. We can't see the wind, but we can hear it and see its powerful effect. We don't know its origin or destination, but we know it's real. 
3) Do You Know the Truth? (3:10-12) 
a. Most people do not understand about the transforming power of God's Spirit.

Key Doctrine -- New Birth 
The new birth is a work of God's grace whereby believers become new creatures in Christ Jesus. It is a change of heart wrought by the Holy Spirit through conviction of sin, to which the sinner responds in repentance toward God and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

What can I do when problems around me seem too tough to change? 
• Explore godly wisdom and commit to embrace it as the norm for our lives. 
1) Accept Godly Wisdom (7:11-14) 
a. And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD. ~ Joshua 24:15 
b. Conventional wisdom vs. godly wisdom 
c. Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding. ~ Proverbs 4:7 
d. Wisdom springs from a right relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ. 
e. POINT: Wisdom can preserve your very life: 
i. It can steer you into a lifestyle that pleases God. 
ii. It can help you navigate through life's adversities. 
iii. It can help you avoid making disastrous decisions. 
2) Avoid Foolish Extremes (7:15-18) 
a. Biblical wisdom consistently exalts righteous behavior over wicked and foolish behavior, e.g., Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people. ~ Prov. 14:34 
b. Biblical wisdom frequently warns against the dangers of extreme behavior, whether grounded in religious extremism or in sinful ideas, e.g., Also, that the soul be without knowledge, it is not good; and he that hasteth with his feet sinneth. ~ Proverbs 19:2 
c. POINT: A person guided by godly wisdom avoids extreme behavior and orients his or her life toward God. 
3) Know God Is in Control (8:10-12, 16-17) 
a. When caught in the middle of a crisis, it's then that remembering God's sovereignty and goodness can help us continue to walk in faith. 
b. We as finite human beings cannot completely understand the infinite God's ways. Rather than despair, trust in God's control of time and eternity. 
c. Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, ~ Hebrews 12:1

What's wrong with wanting to get as much stuff in life as possible? 
• Look at God's wisdom about the pursuit of wealth. 
 
1) Headed Toward Dishonesty (5:8-9) 
a. (Pray for political leaders) I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; 
For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. ~ I Timothy 1-2 
b. Elect men/women of moral integrity. 
c. Keep the Constitution. 
2) Headed Toward Loneliness (5:10-16) 
a. Dangers of making the pursuit of money the primary goal of life*: 
i. We can never get "enough". 
ii. Dealing with demands of others who want to "share" in the riches. 
iii. Wealth can't buy peace of mind. (sleep, health) 
iv. Wealth can disappear in a moment. Can't be taken beyond the grave. 
3) Headed Toward Joy? (5:18-20) 
a. God helps us focus on the joys of our earthly lives. 
4) Headed Toward Frustration? (6:10-12) 
a. Without God, yes. 
b. (With God) The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. ~ John 10:10

[15] For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie. ~ Rev. 22:14-15

4) Be Devoted to Good Works (3:11-15) 
a. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. ~ Eph. 2:10 
b. [17] But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? 
[18] My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. ~ I John 3:17-18 
c. "good works" - caring for needs of others. Greatest need --- salvation! 
For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? ~ Mark 8:36

Look for Good Works (Titus 3:1-15)
Since I'm created in Christ for good works, what should I be doing?
1) Live Well Before Outsiders (3:1-3)
a. "outsiders" -- 
[14] Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.
[15] For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.   ~ Rev. 22:14-15
b. "foolish" --
The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity: there is none that doeth good.  ~ Psalm 53:1
2) Be Transformed by God's Salvation (3:4-8)
a. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.   ~ Romans 5:8
b. "heirs" -- 
And I intreat thee also, true yokefellow, help those women which laboured with me in the gospel
