A Song of Hope Luke 2:22-32 
Even if Covid was not happening right now, most of us would probably be in a situation where hoping in God would be difficult. Even though Jesus was born near the end of Simeon’s life, Simeon kept praying and hoping in the coming of Christ, because he trusted God’s word. The wait amplified the joy he had when he saw Him. There is reason for hope (2:25) and Jesus is proof that God kept His word (2:29). The word is clear communication from God to us to have hope, and we know that God keeps His word. 
While we are moving forward in hope, let’s hope in God’s word (2:29). Let us not base our opinion on God depending on our expectations. Instead of hoping on the outcome, let’s hope in His presence. Let us also see with eyes of faith, be an agent of hope (2:30-32), and take Jesus in our arms. When we cling onto Him, He holds onto us.

Luke 2:22-32: A Song of Hope (December 20, 2020)

“A Song of Joy” | Luke 1:67-79 
As Christmas is nearing, we gain joy from the festivities and anticipation leading up to the holiday. However, once Christmas is over, we tend to lose that joy. That kind of joy is short-lived, but the true, eternal joy of Christmas comes from the joy of salvation and the joy of faith rewarded. What makes the joy of salvation so great? Luke 1:68-78 reminds us of why salvation meets our greatest needs. Salvation means: God’s nearness (v. 68), freedom (v. 68), security (v. 69), rescue (v. 71), oath (v. 73), and the dawn of a new day (v. 78). The joy of faith rewarded (v. 8-17) comes from fruition coming to life and answered prayers by God. The birth, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus all lead to the eventual return of Jesus, which will reveal all of God’s glory and work. As Christians, we can look forward to our faith being rewarded by God upon the return of Christ.

As Christmas nears, let us sing a song of joy because of our joy in Christ and not temporary things. Pray that you would continue to seek God and that your joy would be revived, even during a trying year. Continue to pray, persevere, and look forward to the coming of Christ.

Luke 1:67-79: A Song of Joy (December 6, 2020)

Often times, we view our weakness as humility, but a preoccupation with our weakness is actually pride, not humility. Instead, lets focus on the theology of strength, which shows us the strength God provides us when He is in the picture. The first thing Hebrews 12 teaches us about the theology of strength is to be strong because of what we have in Christ (Hebrews 12:18-24). In Christ we have: the joy of the angels, belonging of children, redemption of the righteous, and the mercy of God. The second thing Hebrews 12 teaches us is to be strong because God’s Kingdom is unshakeable (12:25-28). God’s rule and sovereignty is our strength and is eternal. The third thing Hebrews 12 teaches us is to be strong because God is a consuming fire (12:29). Fire can either be detrimental or life-giving; when God is for us, nothing can shake us. 
. 
Submitting to God’s shaking is important; responding otherwise will lead us to weakness and burn out. Let us not focus on relief from our trials but pray for strength to run in faith, especially through our trials. Let us also pray for strength to run together with our brothers and sisters.

“Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire.” Hebrews 12:28-29

The first reality we can be certain of is the single sacrifice: Jesus’s single sacrifice surpasses all time (9:26) and covers all believers but is offered to everyone (9:28). The single sacrifice suffices for all time and all believers because of Christ’s perfect obedience. The second reality we can be certain of is Jesus as the sitting priest (10:11-14). He sits because He is king, and He reigns over enemies: sin and death. How do you know we can be sure? We can be reassured in this decisive hope that Jesus has already defeated His enemies, and His work has been finished 
. 
We don’t need a second chance because the gospel eliminates the need for second chances. Jesus’s single sacrifice reminds us that we don’t need to try so hard to prove ourselves to God. Let’s delight ourselves in doing His will and knowing He will take care of us. While we wait for Jesus’s return, let’s eagerly wait for Him in obedience by fighting sin, what Satan is trying to do, and what God cares about. Redemption is coming!

Battling Through Brokenness 
. 
Jesus enters our brokenness (2:6-9). There are two glories: glory of becoming created in God’s image and glory of authority to rule over earth. However, the glory of man isn’t realized due to sin. Rather than condemn us, Jesus entered our brokenness by becoming man. 
. 
Jesus makes glory the final word (2:9-10). He became man to taste death for everyone, but didn’t stay dead. He entered brokenness, but wasn’t broken. That makes glory our last word, too, through Him. 
. 
Jesus sets the pattern of suffering leading to glory (2:9-10). He was crowned with glory and honor because of His suffering, and the founder of our salvation was made perfect through suffering. Suffering was what made Christ who Christ is, and shows that if suffering was fit for Him, it is fitting for us, too. He ensures that our suffering will not be wasted. 
. 
Jesus is our present help (2:11-18). Because He became man, He knows what a struggle perseverance is. 
Because He overcame the power of death, He will strengthen us to overcome as well. There is temptation to quit persevering because of the brokenness around us, but let brokenness be our motivation to run to Him for mercy and grace.

I. The Christian’s cup: the cup of suffering (Mark 10:39) 
A. Suffering is needed for deeper fellowship with Jesus- You deeply identify with Him because there is a deeper connection and bond created through understanding his suffering. (Phil 3:10) 
B. Suffering is needed as preparation for heaven- It creates longing in our heart and greater joy when it is healed in heaven. (2 Cor. 4:17) 
C. Suffering is needed to witness to a suffering Messiah- Jesus is a sufferer and He is shown when His people suffer as he did. (Col 1:24) 
. 
II. The Christian’s cup: the cup of sacrifice (Mark 10:45) 
A. Motivation: greatness- God praises and honors us when we sacrifice for His sake. Sacrifice is not loss but gain. (Mark 10:43) 
B. Motivation: life to others- The economy of the kingdom of God is that Sacrifice results in fruit and life. There is joy and privilege in sacrifice when others are saved by the love of Christ. (Mark 10:45)

III. Jesus’ cup: the cup of wrath (Mark 10:38-39) 
Jesus took the cup of wrath and these are only cups of grace to us. The wrath was all poured onto Jesus, but to follow Jesus means to follow in His footsteps.

Mark 10: 35-45 "Are You Able to Drink the Cup That I Drink?" (March 29, 2020)

“Whenever we try to force Jesus to be what we want him to be, it inevitably will lead to us walking away.” 
 
It’s convenient to stay with Jesus when life is going well, but when life goes south, where will we turn? Faith is not an easy walk, especially with the uncertain circumstances we are facing now. In John 6, Jesus talks about 5 difficult but important truths. Will you still stay strong in faith, knowing these hard truths? 
 
Hard truth #1: Jesus is about His purposes, not ours (John 6:14-15) 
Hard truth #2: Jesus prioritizes our spiritual needs over physical needs (John 6:26) 
Hard truth #3: Jesus will not prove Himself to us (John 6:30) 
Hard truth #4: Jesus demands total surrender (John 6:41-42) 
Hard truth #5: God is sovereign (John 6:65). 
 
Those who believe these truths, to be good truths, are the ones who truly stay with Jesus. These truths = eternal life. 
. 
Applications: 
- Do you believe? Submit to God’s sovereignty and embrace it fully. If you have trouble believing, ask God to help you believe, as He will help those who have that desire. 
- Believe that these truths assure us of his great faithfulness; we are in God’s hands.

“Lord, to whom shall we go? You Have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.” John 6:68-69
