Title: “Care Continually for One Another” 
Text: 1 Corinthians 12:14-26 
 
In 1965, Milton Bradly introduced an electronic board game called OPERATION! Players took turns carefully removing cleverly named body parts (adam’s apple, funny bone, spare rib...) with electronic tweezers. If the tweezer touched either side of the body part location upon removal, an alarm sounded and the patient’s nose lit up. The “patient” (Cavity Sam) was very sensitive. 
 
The Apostle Paul is writing to a church in Corinth where church members had become sensitively dismissive of each other as they played a spiritual version of “Operation” by picking on each other. Paul encourages those believers to put that game away and, instead, show continual care by building one another up, an important lesson for this age in history in which division and separation is the current trend-- something the church must counter with intentional unity.

I’ve found it to be true in my own prayer life: I rush to ask God for things rather than “hallowing” His name. After all, He is the only one worthy of glory, honor, and praise. Why, then, when we come to Him in prayer, do we not take more time just to remember His majesty, character, and glory? Why is it that we sing worship songs to Him from the pews but rush through worshipping Him when we pray? 
 
Have you ever come home from a long day and said hello to your loved ones only to have them reply with a request? I wonder if God feels that way with us sometimes. When we’re going through a trial or a struggle, we run to Him to ask for things (as we should!) but is it possible that the peace we are looking for is not found in a change of our situation but rather having a different posture in our prayers? Maybe our peace rests in remembering who He is and spending time with Him rather than rushing to focus on what He can provide.

Title: The Worship That Requires Gloves 
Text: Ephesians 6:5-9 
 
When we think of the word “worship”, our minds tend to picture scenes that include singing, reading scripture or preaching. Those are certainly important aspects of worship, but we must remember that the way a believer lives out their faith at their job is also an act of worship to God. In truth, my truest reflection of God’s worth is found in the activities that require me to “wear work gloves”, whether literally or figuratively, with my employment tasks. Paul makes that exact point when he speaks to the Ephesians in chapter 6 about reflecting well on God whether they are the boss or the employee. A powerful lesson of truth that affects us all.

For example, if an outdoor potted plant is accidentally tipped on its side, the principles of geotropism will kick in to keep the plant alive as the top of the plant changes direction to now growing straight up past the edge of the pot seeking light. In Ephesians five, the Apostle Paul continues his practical lessons for how believers can “seek spiritual life” by living for Christ in such a dark world of sin, by both seeking the light of Christ, and by putting down roots of daily behavior that please our Lord. Paul never sugar-coats the truth about the challenges of sin in this world; he instead declares the practical, joyful hope of living as children of light even in dark times.

Frequently, throughout the Apostle Paul’s letters, he commands believers to “walk” in a certain way. He uses the action of walking to illustrate how we should live our faith in daily life. Then he quickly gives detailed explanations to ensure that his readers understand what proper conduct is or isn’t for believers. We should walk according to our new life in Christ and avoid meandering into patterns of sin. One of the simple games my grandchildren love to play is “the matching game”. The cards are laid face down on a table, and by taking turns, the players each try to find a matching front and back of some object. It takes work and often their young minds have quicker recall than mine! A similar spiritual principle is at work in every church as God’s people seek to match their gifts and abilities to works of service that build God’s kingdom. Although it is a serious endeavor in the church, just like the board game, it takes work! 
 
Paul declares the importance of matching ourselves to the fullness of Christ’s purposes as we together build up the church of Jesus Christ and grow in spiritual maturity. We will talk about the practical application of this truth this week in our Ephesian series.

Paul lists seven important truths Christian believers have in common that help us to harmoniously unify ourselves as we declare the glory of God. In this divisive culture, it is important that we know, understand, and apply these truths about Christian unity.

But of even greater significance, we, who are believers, should recall Paul’s instructions to Ephesian believers – “I urge you to walk worthy of your calling”. How we live our daily lives is our truest reflection of our submission to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. Paul used the word, ‘walk’ because it indicates a steady, persevering move toward the goal of bringing glory to God each day. Fortunately, Paul does more than give a command. He also included some very practical actions that help us walk the line for our Lord Jesus. We will review the practicality of spiritual line-walking this coming Sunday.

For some reason, it seems almost irresistible not to release the gas tank cover latch, get out, open the tank cover and look into the gas tank (as if we expect to see something that confirms our dilemma). Upon opening, we catch the whiff of gasoline, but alas, no mere aroma will bring power back into that engine. We need real fuel. 
 
In our passage for the sermon, Paul prays that believers in Ephesus will be “filled with the fullness of God” so they can be powered to serve. Join us as we review the practical actions for which God wants His children to be filled as we serve Him today.
