This morning, we see another way the Lord preserved His people once they were in the land: through revival. Once Israel's godly leadership died off, the people immediately fell away from the Lord. Each time they did, the Lord afflicted and disciplined them through other nations. Each time He did so, they cried out to Him and He raised up a leader through whom He revived them and led them to victory. We see that through this cycle of apostasy and revival, the Lord did two things to advance the work of redemption: 
*He preserved Israel from destruction so that Messiah could come. 
*And in doing so, He preserved the true church. 
In our own time of apostasy, we are encouraged to seek the Lord for personal, corporate, national and global revival, for the glory of His name.

We consider the third fruit of holy love: that we will persevere in obedience to the end of our lives, no matter what trials and difficulties we may have to face. This follows from the fact that this holy love in our souls will never be fully extinguished. Therefore, we will continue to move forward towards Christ-likeness until we obtain it in heaven. We consider that: 
*If the Lord has saved you, you will persevere to the end. 
*The believer will persevere not only in easy times, but especially in difficult times. 
*Even when the believer stumbles and falls (which is, sadly, inevitable) he or she will never fall entirely away from the Lord. 
A true believer will persevere because the Lord is preserving him or her. If we hold on to the Lord, it is a good sign that we are true believers.

090517dc - The Book of Revelation - Chapter 5, Part 1 - Revelation 5:1-2

In this message, we will see the work of redemption advance even further. The Lord had revealed His worship to His people in the wilderness, but there were certain aspects of that worship that couldn't be implemented until they were in the Promised Land, because they were tied to that Land. Now we see those elements of worship enforced, as well as the Lord's miraculous protection over His people when they were faithful to worship Him in this way. We consider: 
 
*First, what these elements of worship were, and how they pictured the work of Christ. 
*And second, how the Lord was faithful to protect His people when they were faithful to worship Him. 
 
We are challenged to worship the Lord faithfully in the way He has taught us to worship. If the believer worships Him faithfully, He will protect him or her faithfully.

We consider the conquest of Canaan by Israel and see that God raises up a leader of His people (Joshua) to defeat His enemies in Canaan - a person raised up to give the people of God rest in the land. We see: 
 
* That Joshua is a picture of Christ. 
* That Joshua's battle against the Canaanites is a picture of Christ's battle with the kingdom of darkness 
* That Joshua's conquering Canaan is a picture of Jesus' conquering death and bringing believers to settle in Heaven.

We consider a prophecy of Balaam and two of Moses that further revealed who the Messiah would be, but also how God's people would react to Him. We see: 
 
* That the Christ who was yet far off would be king 
* That He would be Redeemer, a Shepherd, an Intercessor and Prophet 
* That the Jews who were the heirs of all of these blessings would actually reject Him resulting in His turning to the Gentiles. 
 
Looking back on the events of Christ's time, we see how these prophecies were fulfilled and we are encouraged to receive this Christ as the only Savior from sin, and not to reject Him as Israel did.

* Counterfeit affections actually harden the heart. 
* Real affections, in contrast, soften the heart. 
 
In light of this, we are urged to examine our hearts to find if our affections towards Christ are genuine.

* First, that true religions affections - the result of spiritual knowledge - will transform you into the image of Christ, will make you like Jesus.

In a day when many churches teach that the Law of God is a bad thing that was entirely done away with in Christ and is now irrelevant for the believer, we see that nothing could be farther from the truth. 
 
We consider how the Law serves as a schoolmaster, pointing us to Christ for salvation. Once we are saved, Christ points us to the Law to show us how to live for Him and the Law then points us back to Christ for the grace we need to live a holy life. 
 
The Moral Law of God is still in place for the believer - not as something to be kept to earn salvation, but as something that shows us the beauty of God and His character and something that is to be the standard by which we live. Christ has kept this Law for us and now gives us the grace to enable us to live more and more holy lives.

We consider the final revelation in the book of Genesis that God gave of His redemptive plans in the Lord Jesus Christ. When Jacob was dying, he blessed his 12 sons and we see Christ clearly foretold in the blessing given to Judah. 
 
We see: 
 
* The blessing promised to the tribe of Judah 
* Why these blessings came to this tribe 
* How these blessings pointed to Christ

081012am - The Purpose of Redemption - Isaiah 51:7-8

Arrived at Rome, Paul calls the Jews to come and hear his defense and many of them come to his home. Even though they have heard no complaints about Paul, they have heard about the 'sect' to which he belongs and they want to hear more about it. 
 
Paul reasons solemnly with them from morning until evening, preaching the Gospel and trying to persuade them of its truth. 
 
From this passage, we see Paul's earnest plea for the Jews' salvation and also their mixed response, in that some believe and others don't. 
 
Once again, we review God's plan of salvation and His sovereignty in it but we underscore our responsibility to make Christ known to all mankind.
