The Eyes of a Prophet -- Amos 7:7-15

Isaiah's soaring vision lift our spirits, "...they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint." To fly, run, walk requires energy, stamina, strength. And where do these come from? From waiting. "...those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength...." What does it mean for us to "wait for" and even "wait upon" the Lord?

Renewing Our Strength -- Isaiah 40:21-31

On the Fourth Sunday in Advent we will set our sights on Joseph and Mary's arrival in Bethlehem. Luke was a masterful storyteller who wants us to know - three times he tells us - that after Jesus was born he was placed in a manger. The manger becomes the focal point, a surprising, even unsettling symbol for a savior - both for the early church and for us. Why is it so difficult to make room for this sort of savior? 
 
Join us for worship! The Shumaker Family will light the Advent candle. And we will hear about the latest Envision grants.

Grace and gratitude. The dynamic core of the Christian life. God freely provides us with every blessing in abundance, including life itself, so that having enough of everything we may share it abundantly, joyfully, "for God loves a hilarious giver" (2 Cor. 9:7). The experience of God's generosity inevitably yields in us a harvest of praise and thanksgiving and lives that find joy in being generous too. "Thanks be to God," Paul wrote to the Christians in Corinth, "for God's indescribable gift!" (2 Cor. 9:15). Grace and gratitude.

In Greco-Roman society humility wasn't a virtue. It was considered shameful. Greeks and Romans thought nothing of praising themselves in public or, better still, getting others to praise them. Caesar Augustus was known for his self-aggrandizement. And then a seismic shift occurred in the First Century when the followers of Jesus, forced to come to grips with his humiliating death on a cross, realized that humility is actually holy, sacred. Humility, then, became a mark of the Christian life, a cruciform life. And there's probably no better example of this shift in meaning than Paul's vision for the church in Philippi.

When words fail and we don't know how to pray, when emotions are tender and raw, when we feel alone or afraid or sad, we can take comfort in knowing that the "Spirit intercedes" for us "with sighs too deep for words."

Sighs too Deep for Words -- Romans 8:26-39

"Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest" (Mt. 11:28). Words that carry a lot of meaning these days. Many are weary. Everything seems "heavy." And we are tired. Jesus invites us to exchange our yoke, all that we're "carrying," with his, a yoke that is "easy" and "light." It is possible to set aside the heavy yokes that weigh us down and bind us to the past, in order to walk his way of gentleness and humility. ~Kenneth Kovacs
