The God You May Not Know 
Judges 11:29-12:7

One of Pastor David Jeremiah’s most recent books is entitled The God You May Not Know. While it sounds like a book written for those who have not come to know Christ, the fact is that it was written primarily for those who have…but who have misconceptions or misunderstandings about what God is like. Today, we’ll see a similar thing in the life of Jephthah…the misfit, social outcast, man of violence…whom God chose to be the next judge/deliverer in Israel. With God’s Spirit resting on him, he won a decisive victory over the wicked Ammonites, who had oppressed Israel for 18 years. But his story closes with two episodes that show that he had a lot to learn about God. Let’s take a look… 
 
The Terrible Vow He Made (11:29-40) 
 
• Vows to God were not only permitted but encouraged in the Old Testament law. See, for example the Nazirite vow in Numbers 6. Committing oneself to a ministry or task to which God has called us for a time is a good thing. But Jephthah’s vow did not originate with God and certainly didn’t follow God’s standards. 
 
• The battle and the details of the vow...verses 29-33… 
 
 
 
• The fulfillment of the vow…verses 34-40… 
 
 
• This is a debated event. Scholars line up under two views of what Jephthah did. Either he sacrificed his daughter as a burnt offering…or he committed her to a life of service to LORD in which she would never marry or have a family.

• Regardless of which view one takes, the bigger issue in the story was Jephthah’s view of God.

The dozen people whom God chose to be judges in the book of Judges are in many ways different as night and day. No two exactly alike. Except in one key respect. Each was a trophy of God’s amazing grace. Today we’ll focus our attention upon a man who maybe was the greatest trophy of grace of all…a man by the name of Jephthah. 
 
But first, two other trophies (10:1-5) 
 
• Tola (verses 1-2). His life and ministry is summarized in two simple accomplishments. 
 
• Jair (verses 3-5). No military victories mentioned. Just a description of his time as a judge. 
 
 
Jephthah, the most amazing trophy of all (10:6-11:29, 33) 
 
• The Judges “pattern” shows itself again… 
 
Divine blessing (under Tola and Jair) 
Disobedience (10:6) 
Divine discipline (10:7-9) 
Divine deliverance (10:11-18) 
 
• Why do I call Jephthah the most amazing trophy of all? Because, when we meet him, he had three strikes against him. 
 
v. 1…the son of a … 
 
v. 2…driven out by his … 
 
v. 3…a … 
 
But out of desperation (and by God’s grace!), the people of Israel called him to be their leader (verses 4-11). 
 
 
• Jephthah and the Ammonites (10:12-29, 33) 
 
…attempts peace negotiations (verses 12-28). 
 
 
 
 
…assembles an army (verses 29, 33). 
 
 
…acts as judge for 6 years (12:7).

Finishing Off the Enemy 
Judges 7:23-8:21

The battle recorded in Judges 7 is one of the most incredible demonstrations of God’s grace and power in history. 120,000 Midianites fell that night…not one of them killed by an Israelite! But the battle wasn’t over. 15,000 Midianites escaped and fled toward their homeland east of the Jordan River. But Gideon was determined to see that they didn’t make it there safely. There is a great lesson here for us. Temptations and conflicts and sins in our lives which stand between us and our relationship with God must be dealt with in the same way…they must be dealt with clearly and decisively and finished off! Let’s take a look at Judges 7-8. 
 
Working Through the Text 
 
 Calling for reinforcements (7:23-25). Remember the 32,000 that eventually were whittled down to 300 (see 7:1-8)? It seems that a lot of them have come back…plus one addition tribe. 
 
 
 
 
 Contention in the ranks (8:1-3). The great tribe of Ephraim had not been included among the tribes initially called to fight the Midianites (see 6:35). They were insulted by this omission. But note the diplomatic way Gideon handled the matter. 
 
 
 
 
 Two cowardly cities (8:4-9). Succoth and Penuel were Israelite cities located on the east side of the Jordan in the territory settled by the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh when Israel first came to the Promised Land. 
 
Why didn’t they help Gideon and his men? 
 
What did Gideon promise them when he returned that way? 
 
 
 
 Crushing the rest of the Midianite army (8:10-12)… 
 
 
 
 The grand conclusion (8:13-17)… 
 
…to the two cowardly cities (8:13-17) 
 
 
…to the two kings (8:18-21) 
 
 
 
 
Learning From the Text 
 
1. We must not accept or excuse things in our lives that God doesn’t. 
 
 
 
2. Changing the things God doesn’t accept in our lives almost always involves a fight. 
 
 
 
3. We often need a lot of help in the fight to change. 
 
 
 
4. Whenever we fight to change what God doesn’t accept in our lives, we will discover that He will be there when we need Him with what we need from Him.

How Not to Know the Will of God

How can I know the will of God? Every believer at one time or another has wrestled with this question when facing a big decision or major fork in the road in our lives. What would God want me to do? Many of us have been told that it is time to “put out a fleece.” After all, isn’t that what Gideon did? But what we’ll see today in that episode from his life, what happened to Gideon falls under the category of description (what happened on that occasion), not prescription (what we should do). Let’s take a look… 
 
Getting to Know the Will of God…3 Basic Truths… 
 
Basic Truth #1 – God wants us to know His will for our lives. His will for us involves at least 3 parts. 
 
• Faithfulness to the God has given to every believer… 
 
• of where God has not given specific commands… 
 
• Finding God’s in the big decisions of life… 
 
Basic Truth #2 – believer needs special guidance from God sometimes. 
 
Basic Truth #3 – God has given us for discerning His special guidance in our lives. 
 
Gideon and the Fleece (Judges 6:33-40) 
 
• Assembling the troops (verses 33-35). It is important to note verse 34’s mention that the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon. What God gives us to do, He will be there with us! 
 
• Gideon’s weakness… 
 
• Three reasons why “putting out the fleece” is not a prescription for us… 
 
 #1 – Gideon already God’s will (verse 37). 
 
 #2 – Far from being an expression of , this was an expression of . 
 
#3 – The “fleece test” only Gideon’s doubts temporarily. Later in 7:9-10, God would have to confirm His will to His servant again. 
 
Guidelines for Knowing the Will of God 
 
• Every believer must God for His guidance in making big decisions. 
 
 
• Every believer must approach finding God’s will in the . Some of the tools God has given us as the “right way” includes…

The Coronavirus pandemic has impacted all of our lives. We are reminded daily of the latest statistics of how many new cases have been confirmed and deaths attributed to COVID. All of us have been inconvenienced personally. And our nation has been further impacted socially and culturally in ways that aren’t receiving a lot of media attention at present. 
 
• Today our focus will be upon a couple of things. One, is there any good that can be found in the COVID pandemic? Romans 8:28 would certainly say there is. And two, if there is, what could that be? 
• We’ll find our answer in a country that was going through its own national crisis 3500 years ago during the time of Gideon…in what God was doing. 
 
1. Gideon (and Israel) in God’s classroom 
 
• A review of the call of Gideon (6:12, 14, 16, 24)… 
 
• Gideon’s first big responsibility (verses 25-27)…

An Ordinary Man Called by an Extraordinary God 
Judges 6:1-24

Introduction. God often uses the most unlikely people to accomplish His great purposes. Today we’ll meet one of them, a man named Gideon. Two parts to the portrait that we will see of Gideon… 
 
• An outstanding hero. God used him to win one of the most amazing victories in history (later, in chapters 7-8). See also Hebrews 11:32. 
• An ordinary human. Sometimes weak, afraid, needing special encouragement from God to move forward, and making many mistakes along the way. 
 
1. The Conditions in Israel (5:31-6:10) 
 
• A review of the “cycles” in Judges… 
 
Divine blessing…the current cycle involving Gideon starts in 5:31b… 
Disobedience…this phase of the cycle is seen in 6:1a… 
Divine discipline…this phase of the cycle is seen in 6:1b… 
Divine deliverance…Gideon will be God’s choice as the next judge/deliverer… 
 
• A summary of the conditions in Israel (verses 2-6)… 
 
The invaders (verses 2-3)… 
 
The invasions (verses 4-5)… Each year the enemies came at harvest time… 
 
The impact this had on Israel (verses 2, 6)… 
 
 
• God’s first response to the prayers of His people was to send a prophet with a message (verses 7-10). The prophet isn’t named, but the message was loud and clear. 
 
2. The Call of Gideon (verses 11-18). A most unusual conversation with a “visitor”…God Himself…although Gideon didn’t realize who it was until later… 
 
• Note what Gideon was doing…and why (verse 11)… 
 
• The conversation (verses 12-18)…notes… 
 
First some backdrop… 
 
Note the two spellings of “lord” in this conversation. When spelled with all capital letters, it is referring to God. When spelled using small letters (as Gideon did), it is a different word the Hebrew text…a title of respect…but one more like our word “sir”… 
 
Note also that the “person” who spoke with Gideon is called “the angel of the LORD” in verses 11-12…but simply the LORD in verses 14, 16. They are one and the same. “The angel of the LORD” is none other than God Himself…taken by most scholars as a reference to Jesus in the Old Testament. 
 
Then the conversation. A conversation in which God announces His choice of Gideon as the next great deliverer/judge…but in which He had to change some of Gideon’s thinking… 
 
• The conversation ends with Gideon’s request for a sign…which God will grant in the next section. 
 
3. The Confirmation of Gideon’s Call (verses 19-24) 
 
• Verse 19…more like a banquet! But see verse 18, a meal with a purpose…an “offering” to God. 
 
• The “veil” on Gideon’s understanding is lifted in verses 20-23… 
 
• Gideon’s last act…verse 24…
