With the Master

For there is coming a time when we will all stand before the judgment seat of Christ and receive rewards for the things that we have done, whether good or bad. In our final lesson in the second chapter of Colossians we consider the third part of Paul’s warning. The third “ism” we must avoid – asceticism. An ascetic is someone who lives a life of rigorous self-denial as a means of earning forgiveness and favor with God. Is this a danger in today’s church? L9 – Are We Complete in Christ Alone? Colossians 2:8-15

Paul agonized over people he had never met because they were being caught up in the heresy of Gnosticism. False teaching caused Paul to burn with indignation and to agonize for those affected by it. In this distress Paul even though chained in prison did not just sit around worrying. He turned his inward agonizing upward to God in prayer for them. What did Paul pray for them? What was his desire? The answer if found in his four-fold prayer for these dear believers, a prayer that we would do well to pray for those we know are caught up in false teaching.

L8 – Requests and Recommendations for Those Caught Up in Heresy, Colossians 2:1-7

Perhaps some of you feel a little put out when you fill out those information forms at the doctor’s office or some other place and you come to that line which asks, “What is your occupation?” and you write down that you’re a housewife or a home-school mom. “Oh, you’re just a housewife? Don’t you know the highest calling God gave to women was to be a homemaker?” Or, “Homeschooling my children is a blessing and a privilege!” 
You might be wondering what all this has to do with this lesson. Well, the apostle Paul was called to the ministry and he certainly wasn’t “just a minister.” He was divinely called to the work of the ministry. In this lesson, we’re going to learn quite a bit about this man who was “just in the ministry.” I trust it will be encouraging to you as you contemplate the ministry to which God has divinely called you.

Paul has just written regarding the supremacy of Christ and really answered the question of just who this Jesus is by giving us eight descriptions of Him. Paul now shifts his thoughts to the work of reconciliation. This One whom Paul has just described is quite able to reconcile us and does indeed reconcile us. That my friend, is a humbling fact! So, the first question we want to consider in this lesson is: How are we reconciled?

In these few short verses Paul gives us eight descriptions of who Jesus is. There is no other portion of the Word of God which contains so many descriptions of the supremacy of Jesus Christ. Who is Jesus? In this lesson we see the strengths of the church at Colosse. The things they were known for: their faith, their hope, their love, and their fruit-bearing. Their focus was upward, outward, forward, and onward. Their faith was demonstrated in their souls looking upward to God. Their love shown in looking outward to the needs of others. Their hope displayed in their looking forward to the future in heaven. Their fruit-bearing manifested in moving onward in service to God and others. In my own life I have lost good friends, or those I thought were good friends, because I warned them of what God says in His Word, but I take great comfort In the disciples who were able to go away rejoicing for the Kingdom’s sake. I also take comfort in the words of the apostle Peter who said that it is better to suffer for doing what is right than to suffer for doing what is evil. Even if we are rejected, we should never stop praying for the soul of the one who rejects us, and we must continually live Christ before them.
