Samuel was both Israel's political and religious leader. He brought people back to God's words. This brought him great success. The United States of America has a Constitution based upon God's words. If we are ever to reclaim our position as a force for good and justice in this world, we had better get back to that document.

Influence of a Godly Country - 1 Samuel 7:13-17

We should see the past mercy of God as a foundation for future expectation. God has helped us in the past, therefore we will rejoice in the shadow of His wings. The LORD has heard my prayer in the past, so I will call upon Him as long as I live. Paul said that it is God "who delivered us (past) from so great a death, and does deliver us (present); in whom we trust that He will still deliver us (future)" (See 2 Corinthians 1.10). We know from what we have received up to this point in our lives what to expect from this point in our lives.

Defiling with the Tongue - James 3:6-8

Bits and horses, rudders and ships, and fires and forests. James 3.3-5 ties together three illustrations producing a great effect with a small element. The horse and bit emphasize the small size of the bit moving such a powerful horse - a great impact. The ship and rudder emphasize guidance. But the fire and forest analogy emphasize destructive potential. This leads us into the specific application of James 3.1-12 to the subject of gossip.

Judging with the Tongue - James 3:3-5

Pilate sought to stir the empathy of the angry crowd seeking Christ's crucifixion. He seeks to shame their enmity as well. But in spite of all his political prowess and pragmatism, the prophetic word of God holds true.

We need to realize that so that our hearts are fixed on God who will never let us down. God does not share His glory with another. If you want God's help, don't depend upon man's help. God may help through the agency of man, but He doesn't need to do so. He certainly needs us to trust in Him, however.

The Futility of Human Help - Psalm 108:12

The Pharisees seek to temper John's stern preaching. They don’t like their hypocrisy being put on public display. As Herod proves when he takes the life of John the Baptist to satiate the bloodlust of his wife. At the same time, they seek to impose strict legalism upon what they see as Jesus' permissive ministry. There is a great tension in this parable between legalism and licentiousness.

Life's Great Observation - Psalm 107:33-43

Praise and gratitude is absolutely biblical and absolutely necessary. Yet so many acknowledge this and neglect to extend outward expressions of praise and gratitude to God. Why? Perhaps we spend too much time dwelling upon our own corruption ...too much time looking at ourselves and not at Christ. We consider our own desires, but ignore the Lord's promises. We anticipate future trials while forgetting past victories and deliverances. You cannot praise God from a heart filled with discontentment and disappointment.

The Necessity of Praise - Psalm 107:8-9

The Parable of the Ten Virgins - Matthew 25:1-13

Don't ever get the idea that reading your Bible, prayer, and evangelism should interfere with your responsibility to earn a living or take care of your family. Spiritual disciplines govern the way we earn our living. They provide us with proper motivation for the work we do. They make teaching children, analyzing water samples, painting a house, running a crew, or tending to the sick an eternal work. If you are shirking your responsibilities to your family or to your employer and using the excuse that you need more time for God, you are truly deceived. Render the things to Caesar that are Caesar's, and the things to God which are God's.

You possess privileges that many in our world do not. Remember the God who created you. Remember that you were bought at a great and terrible price. Therefore, glorify God body and spirit. You belong to Him.

Faithful and Unfaithful Servants - Matthew 24:45-51

Paul's desire to gather an offering from Gentile churches to relieve the persecuted, famine-stricken believers in Jerusalem is a very strong theme in the NT. Paul addressed churches that had could serve by giving. He did utilize manipulation or guilt-trips. He appealed to the compassion of brothers and sisters for other brothers and sisters. He didn't detail the suffering of the Jewish believers. He simply pointed up the obligation we all have to minister material things to those who provide for our spiritual needs. But where are the churches in Macedonia and Achaia? They are in places like Thessalonica, Berea, and Philippi. These Gentile churches exemplify two very important characteristics when it comes to giving: generosity and genuineness.

Serving and Giving - Romans 15:22-29

Much delay ...much testing ...great incomprehensible promise. And then a wonderful fulfillment. The Word of the LORD will test you. 'Until the time that his word came to pass, The word of the LORD tested him.'

Tested by the Word - Psalm 105:16-22

A look at how Psalm 105:15 is sorely abused by some pastors and evangelists. The sermon contends that some pastors use this passage to defray any criticism leveled at their ministries. It seeks to show that all NT saints are the Lord's anointed (2 Corinthians 1.21; 1 John 2.20, 27). Ironically, some of these supposed shepherds are hurting and fleecing God's anointed.
