Life doesn’t always go the way we expect, and we pray to God for help and guidance. But sometimes it seems like even though we pray with faith, God doesn’t do what we've asked. We seek Him, but don’t feel His presence. We go through pain, but our cries for relief seem to go unanswered. Sometimes, our lives just don’t make sense. No one has experienced this confusion more than Job. This week, we meet Job as he loses everything for no apparent reason. Sitting in the dust of grief, we wrestle with him how to understand our world and our God when God doesn’t make sense to us.

We take a break from walking through the gospel of Luke during Lent to pick up the story of Jesus in the gospel of John this morning. John tells a fascinating story about Mary from Bethany anointing Jesus feet with a ridiculously expensive bottle of perfume. Mary had many reasons to respond with such love to Jesus including his welcoming her as a disciple and bringing her brother back from the dead. Even so, hers was an extravagant response to Jesus. Lent offers a time to reflect on the life we have chosen, the choices we have made, and then to determine how we now ought to live in light of Good Friday and Easter. During this season of Lent, we are walking with Jesus through the eyes of the gospel of Luke, starting at the very beginning of his ministry and concluding on Easter Sunday with the joyous news of his resurrection. This morning, some Pharisees come to warn Jesus of a potential threat from Herod. In response, Jesus warns them of the threats of a compromised life. We put ourselves in danger when we compromise the values of God in order to fit in or get along in the world. To paraphrase Jesus, we let the fox into the henhouse. But Jesus offers, like a mother hen, to give up his own life to save us from the foxes we have invited in.

We long for more. Especially at Christmastime, we long for more. Not the common longing for toys and family, carols and jolly feelings, eggnog and Santa. But a real, deep longing for something that actually fills us up and satisfies. We long for Christ to be with us. Even those of us with Christ in our lives are often overwhelmed by the wants and worries of life. We waver and we grow weary. Can this human longing for more, which is so endemic in our lives, be overcome at Christmas? There is only one possible, positive answer to that question: Christ. We are a people who worry. We worry about war and global warming, politics and finances, kids and parents. We worry about the amount of our worry. Jesus reminds us today how we can be a people of quiet confidence rather than fret and worry.

As Paul continues this letter in chapter 3, he reminds us true joy comes when we set aside our religion of good works and instead simply love Jesus.
