וְאַתָּה בֵּית-לֶחֶם אֶפְרָתָה צָעִיר לִהְיוֹת בְּאַלְפֵי יְהוּדָה מִמְּךָ לִי יֵצֵא לִהְיוֹת מוֹשֵׁל בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל וּמוֹצָאֹתָיו מִקֶּדֶם מִימֵי עוֹלָם׃ 
 
A passage often remembered around Christmas time, Micah 5:2 is quoted in Matthew 2:5-6 to describe that Israel’s ruler would be born in Bethlehem. Some Christian expositors and laypersons see the “eternal pre-existence” of the Messiah and therefore Messiah’s deity in the words of Micah 5:2 (in Hebrew, Micah 5:1): “whose origin is from of old, from ancient days.” 
 
However, even just a comparison of English translations reveals that “eternality” in this passage is not so cut-and-dry. Some English translations of the use a word like “everlasting”, while others translate the same phrase as “from ancient days”. 
 
A word study and the context of the passages shows that neither Micah nor Matthew were declaring the “eternal pre-existence” of Messiah. Rather, the passages refer to the promise of God given to David centuries before. 
The “eternal pre-existence” and “deity of Christ” claims from Micah 5 are based on presuppositions that force a wrong understanding of Hebrew words. The words miqedem "from before" and mimei olam "from ancient days" do not mean “eternal pre-existence” but refer to events in Israel’s past. Specifically, Micah 5:2 refers to the promise God made to David long ago, centuries before Micah’s day. 
 
The “eternality” interpretation also ignores both the literary and historical context of the passage which speaks of a descendant of David who was to rule for Yahweh by the strength of Yahweh his God when the Assyrians came into the land. 
 
The “eternality” interpretation also misses the meaning of the passage. Micah is trusting completely on God’s promise of peace and salvation through a king who would descend from David. There was an amazing, observable sample of that promised victorious peace in David’s descendant Hezekiah (see Isaiah 37:15-38), a sample which gives us concrete evidence and confidence that Yawheh our God fulfills His promises. 
 
The ultimate fulfillment of God’s promise to David is in Jesus. In an even greater fashion than in the days of David or Hezekiah, Jesus the descendant of David will shepherd and rule God’s people for God in the strength of Yahweh his God, and in the majesty of the name of Yahweh his God. 
 
The Gospel of Matthew mentions nothing about the pre-existence of Jesus in quoting Micah’s passage. Neither Jesus nor any New Testament author ever appealed to the Old Testament to reveal the eternal pre-existence or deity of Messiah. Jesus and the New Testament authors did appeal to the Old Testament to show the suffering, death and subsequent glory of Messiah.

Revelation 12 - The Woman the Child & the Dragon - A Reading from the Remedy. 
Dr Timothy R. Jennings "the Remedy" is an "expanded paraphrase" of the New Testament (and now also the Psalms and Genesis) https://www.comeandreason.com/index.php/en/the-remedy 
This renders the text as the Author's commentary, putting forth a particular theological viewpoint. 
 
Revelation chapter 12 is the extended Christmas story, giving us a broader picture of what Adventists often refer to as “The Great Controversy”. 
 
In verses 2 and 5 we see Mary about to give birth. 
In verses 3-4 the source of all evil suffering and death is presented. 
In verse 6, the “woman” is no longer Mary, the mother of our Lord, but the Christian Church; suffering persecution for 1260 years (see also verse 14). 
Then in verse 7 we are taken back in time to the origin of sin, and the war of rebellion in Heaven. 
Verse 9 gives the Adversary 4 names – The Great Dragon, The Ancient Serpent, The Devil & Satan. 
Then in verse 10 we are transported to the time following Christ’s victorious resurrection. 
In verse 13 the Devil knows he is defeated, and executes his evil on Christ’s body of true believers. 
Verse 17 closes Chapter 12 with Satan’s hate and rage against all who remain loyal to GOD. 
 
Baby in a manger? In Revelation 12 the story of Christ’s first Advent is a damning indictment over the Angel who fell so low (Isaiah 14:12-15). In Luke 10:18 the Lord Jesus says, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven”. I have entitled this upload, “The Woman, The Child, The Dragon”. 
 
We are familiar with 
Isaiah 7:14 “… The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.” 
Isaiah 9:6 “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given,” 
Isaiah 11:1 “A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse;” 
Micah 5:2 “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.” 
John 1:14 “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.” 
Luke 2:11 “Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.” 
Matthew 1:21 “She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”” 
Luke 2:7 “she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.” 
Galatians 4:4-5 “But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship.” 
and others. 
Now we can add Revelation chapter 12 to our Christmas Bible readings.

Revelation chapter 12 is the extended version of the Christmas story. 
 
Question: "Should I use a paraphrase of the Bible?" 
Answer: A paraphrase of the Bible is different from a translation. A translation attempts to communicate as “word-for-word” or as “thought-for-thought” as possible. A paraphrase takes the meaning of a verse or passage of Scripture and attempts to express the meaning in “plain language” – essentially the words the author of the paraphrase would use to say the same thing.

Revelation chapter 12 is the extended Christmas story, giving us a broader picture of what Adventists often refer to as “The Great Controversy”. 

In verses 2 and 5 we see Mary about to give birth. 
In verses 3-4 the source of all evil suffering and death is presented.
In verse 6, the “woman” is no longer Mary, the mother of our Lord, but the Christian Church; suffering persecution for 1260 years (see also verse 14). 
Then in verse 7 we are taken back in time to the origin of sin, and the war of rebellion in Heaven. 
Verse 9 gives the Adversary 4 names – The Great Dragon, The Ancient Serpent, The Devil & Satan.

Modern Christians tend to focus on Jesus’ entry into the world as a baby more than they do His promise to return as King. While Christmas is truly worth celebrating and a great time to share His message, Jesus himself calls us to ensure that we are ‘ready’ for His return. Given how adamant He is, it’s worth considering, “Exactly how do I get ‘ready’?” Is there a course to take or a book to read? 
 
If we read around Matthew 24 and 25 there are a few clues. Firstly, we are to be “awake” and “ready” for Him to return at any time, given that no one knows the day or hour to expect him. 
 
Secondly, this state of readiness is characterised by action, not idleness. In Matthew 24 and 25 this action seems to be a matter of fulfilling the roles and tasks that God has called us to do in our own lives and to faithfully become the kinds of people that mirror the life and love of Jesus. 
 
In a very simple way, this is like a parent asking their children to clean their room at the end of each day. “OK Guys, I’m going to cook dinner and when I come back I want everything to be perfectly in order!” Anyone who has made that request knows that the issue isn’t simply that they are unlikely to do their jobs but are most likely to either fight or get distracted! 
 
Like children, we need a reminder to “get your jobs done and stop mucking around!” We are easily distracted from not just our calling in life but also our identity - followers of Jesus called to live lives marked by love! So let’s be “ready” for Jesus’ return by doing the things and being the people that He has called us to!
