Alive to God (Romans 6:8-11)

In the sin of Adam, the federal head or representative of all humanity, all humanity was declared sinners. Sin was imputed to the human race in Adam. This was evidenced by acts of sin, and sin nature, and the universal reign of death. 
 
What is the effect of one man?

Condemned Yet Justified—The Core of the Gospel (Romans 3:21-26)

Romans 2:17-24—“But if you call yourself a Jew and rely upon the Law and boast in God, 18and know His will and distinguish the things that matter, being instructed from the Law, 19and are confident that you yourself are a guide to people who are blind, a light to those in darkness, 20a corrector of the foolish, a teacher of the immature, possessing in the Law the embodiment of knowledge and of the truth—21you, therefore, who teach someone else, do you not teach yourself? You who preach that one is not to steal, do you steal? 22You who say that one is not to commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who loathe idols, do you rob temples? 23You who boast in the Law, through your breaking the Law, do you dishonor God? 24For ‘the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you [Isaiah 52:5; Ezekiel 36:21, 23],’ just as it is written.” 
 
No one is saved by status, heritage, or works. 
 
Possession of the Law does not protect from the wrath of God against sin, in fact, possession of the Law heightens the judgment of God against sin. 
 
What they think will be their salvation will be their condemnation.

All of these things Israel had a mandate to be and do. The keeping of the Law was supposed to be a demonstration of the nature and character of Israel’s God to the rest of the world, inviting the nations to worship Him. 
 
The Law—X-Ray vs. Cure 
 
Someone can have terminal cancer and be unaware and someone else can have terminal cancer and be made aware of it by an x-ray. Access and use of the x-ray, however, will never cure cancer but only reveal it. Similarly, access to and use of the Law does not save, it only identifies sin. The Law establishes guilt, not salvation. 
 
Romans 2:24—“For ‘the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you [Isaiah 52:5; Ezekiel 36:21, 23],’ just as it is written.” 
 
Biblical history precludes any claim by the Jews that they had successfully kept the Law of God. The curses of the Law would become a reality for Israel in the future because Israel would break the covenant to keep the Law, necessitating God’s grace in salvation (cf. Deuteronomy 30:6). 
 
Deuteronomy 31:27—“For I know your rebellion and your stubbornness; behold, as long as I have been alive with you until today, you have been rebellious against the Lord; how much more, then, after my death?” 
 
The Law-breaking of Israel, leading to the blasphemy of God from the Gentiles, necessitated the gospel of God’s salvation (cf. Isaiah 52:7).

In an honor/shame society, shame was very serious and there were many surface reasons to be ashamed of the gospel, but Paul defiantly proclaims he is not ashamed of the gospel in the theme verse of Romans: 
 
"For I am not ashamed of the gospel , for it is the power of God for salvation for everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, 'BUT THE RIGHTEOUS man SHALL LIVE BY FAITH [Habakkuk 2:4].'" (Romans 1:16-17)

This mainly Gentile audience (cf. Romans 1:5-6), familiar with the Old Testament narrative world, needed to be established in the truth, understand the gospel and history, and be assured that the salvation of the Gentiles in the gospel was always God’s plan from the beginning. 
 
All redemptive history culminates in the object of faith, the Son of God, Jesus Christ our Lord: 
 
"...the gospel of God, 2which He promised beforehand through His prophets in the holy Scriptures, 3concerning His Son, who was born of a descendant [Lit seed] of David according to the flesh, 4who was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord," (Romans 1:1-4) 
 
It is as if Paul has been laying out all the titles and credentials of this One who has accomplished the gospel and now, finally, presents His name—Jesus Christ our Lord. 
 
Jesus—historical individual, the Man, Jesus of Nazareth 
Christ—the Anointed One, the Messiah, the One on whom all Old Testament promises depend 
Lord—the primary title of Jesus’ supremacy and right to rule, contrasted to Caesar, often used as a translation of the divine name “Yahweh,” especially when quoting the Old Testament (cf. Romans 10:9-13) 
 
If this One, described in the Old Testament, has arrived and accomplished this work to bring about the gospel, then what will be the result? 
 
Mass Gentile salvation

There is a major difference between horseman and chariots. Horseman are for patrol and reconnaissance while chariots are aggressive tools of war.

This vision (Zechariah 5:5-11) deals with the removal of the sinful system itself from the land and, ultimately, from the whole world. The Jews had left Babylon but they had brought Babylon with them. 
 
Wickedness will be removed from the land through God’s activity and set up as an idol in a house/temple that will continue to grow until a worldwide climax when it will be destroyed forever. 
 
When the evil system is removed, rooted out of the whole earth, then God’s Kingdom will unfold on the earth and God’s will be done on earth as it is in Heaven (Matthew 6:10-11).

Vision #7: A Woman in a Basket (Zechariah 5:5-11)

Think of the most prideful person you know or can imagine, then think of the person least likely to turn to the LORD in repentance, then think of the most powerful ruler on earth. All of those features were Nebuchadnezzar. 
 
God makes Nebuchadnezzar an object lesson, both to the Jews in captivity and to the Gentile nations of the world. 
 
"Is this not Babylon the great, which I myself have built as a royal residence by the might of my power and for the glory of my majesty?" (Daniel 4:30) 
 
“The fortifications of Esagila and Babylon I strengthened and established in the name of my reign forever.” (J. P. Free, Archeology and Bible History (Wheaton: Van Kampen, 1950), p. 228; see also Miller, Daniel, p. 141) 
 
After stating these arrogant words, immediately, Nebuchadnezzar descended into madness, acting like an animal for seven years and was given the conditional statement by God: 
 
"...until you recognize that the Most High is ruler over the realm of mankind and bestows it on whomever He wishes.’" (Daniel 4:32) 
 
What was the final testimony of the most powerful king of history about who really rules the kingdom of men? 
 
Daniel 4:34-35—“...For His dominion is an everlasting dominion, 
And His kingdom endures from generation to generation. 
35All the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing, 
But He does according to His will in the host of heaven 
And among the inhabitants of earth;
