Gratefulness is key to healing. Choosing to be grateful is choosing to acknowledge God's involvement in our lives. It is marking what he has already done, and it is marking the one we need to lean on for what still must happen in our hearts. Oftentimes our brokenness comes as a result of us not being lined up with him. Sometimes the reason we are so broken is because we have not believed that we are loved in a particular area. For example, the person who frequently feels rejected hasn't come to see the truth of their acceptance by God. When we give thanks, we reconnect with the source of life and truth."

The Message You Hear vs the Message You Trust - 8/15/21 - Nehemiah 6: 1-9

Jesus said, "In this world, you will have trouble." He also said, "Pick up your cross and follow me." We do damage to ourselves and others and cannot live in peace when we attempt to steer clear of the pain that comes from 1) our fallen world, and 2) the sacrifice required if we are to love people and follow God. But we can go through anything with peace when we go through with Jesus. He says, "...but behold, I have overcome the world."---

Fear Is Worse Than Pain - 7/18/21 - Isaiah 53: 3-4a, John 16: 33, Mark 8: 31-35, Mark 16: 6-8

There is the biggest difference in the world between those who have and follow Jesus and those who don't. It's not like some people are Christians and some people are really good people who are mostly Christian. A sign of a follower of Jesus is that they have life in all circumstances and invite others into that life. 
 
We've been doing this Covid thing for a year now. A lot of people seem really worn-out. I believe the Lord wants to show us that sometimes what makes us tired is the little ways we fight against the best that God has for us. God wants to give us life, and paradoxically, the scriptures say that receiving life comes from losing life; following Jesus into sacrifice. Sometimes we avoid pain to the point of sapping ourselves dry and running on our own fumes.

We are currently in a series on learning about Being close… How to do loving relationships. Today we talk about the relationship between close friends. The scripture today is about the account of David and Jonathan. Their relationship is one of the best stories of Godly friendship in the whole Bible. Let’s listen for what God has to teach us from them. 
 
1 Samuel 20: 11-17 
“Come,” Jonathan said, “let’s go out into the field.” So they went there together. 
 
Then Jonathan said to David, “I swear by the LORD, the God of Israel, that I will surely sound out my father by this time the day after tomorrow! If he is favorably disposed toward you, will I not send you word and let you know? But if my father intends to harm you, may the LORD deal with Jonathan, be it ever so severely, if I do not let you know and send you away in peace. May the LORD be with you as he has been with my father. But show me unfailing kindness like the LORD’s kindness as long as I live, so that I may not be killed, and do not ever cut off your kindness from my family—not even when the LORD has cut off every one of David’s enemies from the face of the earth.” So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, “May the LORD call David’s enemies to account.” And Jonathan had David reaffirm his oath out of love for him, because he loved him as he loved himself.

Sermon: "God-centered friendships" - 2/22/2015 - 1 Samuel 20: 11-17

We know that if we want to get close to someone we have to trust. We also know that when we are vulnerable, we often get hurt. So how do we ever experience intimacy with anyone? As we enter our new series on intimacy, we start the series where relationships also start: vulnerability. In Matthew 26: 47-54, a crowd has come to arrest Jesus. But instead of calling for God’s angels to attack and protect, Jesus chooses to be totally vulnerable, all for the sake of love. Jesus love is vulnerable; when it comes from him, and when it comes from us. 
 
Matthew 26: 47-54 
"While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.” Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed him. Jesus replied, “Do what you came for, friend.” Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him. With that, one of Jesus’ companions reached for his sword, drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear. “Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword. God sent his son into this world to bring love to the world. But sadly, even though God loves everyone, most never know his love. This is true of those who have never taken the risk to welcome Jesus. This is also true of many Christians who knew Jesus at one point but haven't seen him for years. Today's scripture makes it clear that some will receive the Christmas gift in abundance, and many will see this gift pass them by. Which will we choose? 
Matthew 13: 10-12 
The disciples came to him and asked, “Why do you speak to the 
people in parables?” 
 
He replied, “Because the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them.

Often you hear people say that you have to take care of yourself before you can take care of others. But is that the Biblical perspective? In today’s scripture we ask the question: where does our ultimate security come from? We see that the ones who know that God is their security are the ones who do not have to make themselves secure before caring for others. 
 
Mark 10: 17-31 
As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. You know the commandments: ‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, you shall not defraud, honor your father and mother.’” “Teacher,” he declared, “all these I have kept since I was a boy.” Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth. Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!” The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! We are offspring of the living creator Lord of heaven and earth who gives us life and directs the affairs of all, therefore we should not think God is an object made by human hands, but we should reach out for him, find him and turn to follow him. 
 
Acts 17: 22-34 
 
22 Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said: “People of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious. 23 For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: to an unknown god. So you are ignorant of the very thing you worship—and this is what I am going to proclaim to you. 
 
24 “The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands. 25 And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else. 26 From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. 27 God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us. 28 ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’[b] As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’[c]

Sermon: "God has a First Name" - 11/2/2014 - Acts 17: 22-34

We believe God works in people. We believe God guides people very specifically and directly. We believe God prepares hearts, sets up meetings, and guides people to himself through us. As we continue to grow as people who share our faith, this scripture reassures us that God is the one who is making it all happen. All we need do is listen and go where he sends us.

"Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Go south to the road—the desert road—that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” So he started out, and on his way he met an Ethiopian eunuch, an important official in charge of all the treasury of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians. This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship, and on his way home was sitting in his chariot reading the book of Isaiah the prophet. The Spirit told Philip, “Go to that chariot and stay near it.” Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. “Do you understand what you are reading?” Philip asked. “How can I,” he said, “unless someone explains it to me?” So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. The eunuch was reading this passage of Scripture: “He was led like a sheep to the slaughter, and as a lamb before the shearer is silent, so he did not open his mouth. In his humiliation he was deprived of justice. Who can speak of his descendants? For his life was taken from the earth.” The eunuch asked Philip, “Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?” Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus. As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water. Why shouldn’t I be baptized?” And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him."

What happens when a sinful person with a heart open to God comes face to face with Jesus? They are changed for eternity. In today’s scripture, Zacchaeus is changed just by realizing Jesus came for him. Zacchaeus not only stops cheating people, he offers to give half of what he owns to the poor, and to pay people back four times what he cheated people! Just like with Zacchaeus, salvation starts for us with the realization: “He came even for me!”

Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. 2 A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. 3 He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way. 5 When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” 6 So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly. 7 All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.” 8 But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
