How much faith is enough faith? Does it matter what you believe about God or God and Jesus to make sure you are going to Heaven when you die? Or it that all hype? Don't you think that our good works will be weighed against our bad works and whichever weighs the most, that will determine our final destiny - be it Heaven or Hell? I haven't murdered any one. I give to the church and to a lot of good causes and charities. Will all this make a difference when it comes time for everything to be weighed in the balance? Isn't just "BELIEVE!"? a too simplified answer for this important question? Listen to this message today as Pastor Ragsdale shares The Basics of Belief (What Kind of Faith Should We Have?), The Object of True Belief (Our Faith Should be based on what Object...works, faith, what?), The Baseline of True Belief and finally, The Blessings of True Belief.

Christmas and lights go hand in hand, and it is easy to see why. There's the light of the star the Wise Men followed and the light that shines in the darkness from John's gospel. Along with Christmas lights, the electric lights of the modern world have all but vanquished natural darkness. Night is scarcely night any longer. But the darkness in John's gospel is still abundant, and it still prefers to hide in the shadows. This darkness has little use for the light, for Jesus. That is true even of some who call themselves Christians. But John reminds us that the darkness cannot overcome this light. And we who would follow Jesus are called to embrace the ways of light. We are called to make the world a brighter place.

Try to think of God as someone who forgets. It’s hard to do, because it’s so ingrained in our minds that God is all-knowing and all-seeing, in other words, all-remembering. And yet, we come across the word “remember” in the Bible, especially in the Old Testament, and many times the subject of that verb is “God,” as in, “God remembered.” It makes you stop and think. “How can God remember? But there are other fascinating things that we will learn about Jesus in today's message that will settle once and for all whether we are saved by good works or not.

God sent his son into this world to bring love to the world. But sadly, even though God loves everyone, most never know his love. This is true of those who have never taken the risk to welcome Jesus. This is also true of many Christians who knew Jesus at one point but haven't seen him for years. Today's scripture makes it clear that some will receive the Christmas gift in abundance, and many will see this gift pass them by. Which will we choose? 
Matthew 13: 10-12 
The disciples came to him and asked, “Why do you speak to the 
people in parables?” 
 
He replied, “Because the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them.

Today's scripture makes it clear that some will receive the Christmas gift in abundance, and many will see this gift pass them by.  Which will we choose?
Matthew 13: 10-12
The disciples came to him and asked, “Why do you speak to the 
people in parables?”

He replied, “Because the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them.

Whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.

In this special mid-week episode of Sermon Braindump, I explore Luke 2:1-20, the assigned Gospel text every year for Christmas Eve. We see Luke's account of the birth narrative, which includes the most detail in and around the birth of Christ, even if the details of the birth itself are pretty limited. I explore some of the connections that we see with this passage along with the encounters with the angel Gabriel in chapter 1 as the births of John the Baptist and Jesus are foretold. Finally, I explore the notion of "fear not" which is a strong theme throughout Luke's Gospel.
