Remaining Steadfast During Dark Trials, 2 Kings 4:8-37

In the last lesson we took a look at the qualities of Timothy. Timothy is mentioned over 20 times in the New Testament, but the man we are looking at in this lesson--Epaphroditus--is only mentioned twice, and both instances occur in the Epistle to the Philippians. Does the fact that he is only mentioned twice mean that he is any less a saint than Timothy? No! His relationship with Paul was as important as Paul's relationship with Timothy. In today's lesson we find out just who this hidden saint was.

We have come to what I believe is one of the most important lessons we will have in our study of the Epistle to the Philippians--the danger of murmuring! Benjamin Franklin once said, "Any fool can criticize, condemn, and complain, and most fools do." Let us look at what scripture says.

L12 The Danger of Murmuring, Philippians 2:14-18

When you and I humble ourselves in obedience to our Lord's commands for our lives, we can be certain of His wonderful promise--that we will be exited. The way in which the Lord chooses to flesh that out in our lives may be different for each of us, but it is a promise nonetheless. Because Jesus Christ humbled Himself sin a way that you and I will never be able--by leaving His throne and dying for the sins of the world--God has not only exalted Him, but, Paul says, He has given Him the name which is above every name.

Paul continues to develop his appeal for humility by reminding his readers that humility is possible, especially considering the example of the Lord Jesus Christ. These verses are some of the most majestic in the Scriptures pertaining to the Person of Jesus Christ. As I read and studied and pondered over them, I was humbled by the love of our Lord in giving Himself for me.

Can you imagine? It sounds too good to be true! Yet Philippians 2:1-4 describes the way the body of Christ should function. Can you imagine how God's glory an power would be manifested in our churches today if these verses alone would be applied in every Sunday school class, every youth department, every nursery, every women's ministry, every choir, every elder board, and every ministry of the church? How would God's glory be manifested in our homes, our marriages, our neighborhoods and communities if these verses were applied?

L8 An Exhortation to Meekness and Unity, Philippians 2:1-4

When I reflect over my life as a believer in Jesus Christ, I am ashamed that I have not suffered for my Lord to the extent that my brothers and sisters in other lands have suffered. I also know that I have not suffered like the saints I have read about in the Scriptures. I am sure I am not alone in my meditations regarding suffering. My question to you is: have you ever suffered for Christ's sake, I mean really suffered? A second question I would like you to ponder is this: Who comes to your mind as someone who as suffered for the sake of Christ?

Have there even been days that you longed for heaven and it wasn't just to see Christ, but to get out of a hard situation. Not so Paul, he wanted to be with Christ, yet he realized that the Lord might not yet be finished with him on this earth. Today we listen in on the Apostle Paul's thoughts as to whether it would be best to live or to die.

Have you ever thought about what or whom you would die for? Are you willing to lay down your life for others? What about the Lord? Are you willing to lay down your life for him? Doing so would require daily dying to self and living for Him and others. In this lesson we will observe that Paul did not count his life dear to himself.

If I were to ask you, "Do you desire a richer prayer life, especially as it relates to interceding for others?" I am sure each of you would say, "Yes, I do." In this passage we all go to the school of prayer and learn some wonderful principles of prayer from the Apostle Paul.

Reading the news these days can certainly be alarming! Nations are rising against nations; governments are being overthrown; earthquakes are happening worldwide; economies are collapsing, food shortages are becoming widespread. Christ, but also yes, the depth of God's mercy to save any of us. What was our conduct before Christ? Far from pure. What is our current conduct? Are we striving for purity?
