Song # 1778.1 from Our Gospel In Song Collection by Col Johnston. We read in 1 Samuel in chapter 7 that the ark of the Lord remained at Kiriath Jearim for twenty years, and all Israel sought the Lord. 
It was a long time, twenty years in all, that the ark remained at Kiriath Jearim, and all the people of Israel mourned and sought after the Lord (1 Samuel 7:2). And Samuel said to the whole house of Israel “If you are returning to the Lord with all your hearts, then rid yourselves of the foreign gods and the Ashtoreths and commit yourselves to the Lord and serve Him only, and He will deliver you out of the hands of the Philistines (1 Samuel 7:3). So the Israelites put away their Baals and Ashtoreths, and served the Lord only (1 Samuel 7:4). Then Samuel said “Assemble all Israel at Mizpah and I will intercede with the Lord for you” (1 Samuel 7:5). When they had assembled at Mizpah, they drew water and poured it out before the Lord. On that day they fasted and there they confessed “We have sinned against the Lord” (1 Samuel 7:6). 
Thought for today: trust in God today, and prepare for your tomorrow. 
Thought for the future: your love for God can change the world, but don’t let the world change your love for God. Where will you spend your eternity?

#1778.1- Israel Returns To God - (1 Samuel 7:2-6)

Song # 1776.1 from Our Gospel In Song Collection by Col Johnston. In the Book of 1 Samuel we read in chapter 7 that Samuel travelled throughout Israel as the judge for the people. But he always returned to his hometown of Ramah. 
Throughout Samuel’s lifetime, the hand of the Lord was against the Philistines (1 Samuel 7:13). The towns from Ekron to Gath that the Philistines had captured from Israel were restored to her, and Israel delivered the neighboring territory from the power of the Philistines. Thought for the future: for eternal life it’s not what you know, but who you know. Where will you spend your eternity?

#1776.1- Samuel The Judge - (1 Samuel 7:13-17)

Song # 1773.1 from Our Gospel In Song Collection by Col Johnston. In the Book of 1 Samuel we read in chapter 11 that Saul is confirmed as the first king of Israel. 
Saul mustered his men at Bezek, the men of Israel numbered three hundred thousand and the men of Judah thirty thousand (1 Samuel 11:8). The next day Saul separated his men into three divisions and during the last watch of the night they broke into the camp of the Ammonites and slaughtered them until the heat of the day. Those who survived were scattered, so that no two of them were left together (1 Samuel 11:11). The people then said to Samuel “Who was it that asked ‘Shall Saul reign over us?’ Bring these men to us and we will put them to death” (1 Samuel 11:12). But Saul said “No-one shall be put to death today, for this day the Lord has rescued Israel” (1 Samuel 11:13). Then Samuel said to the people “Come, let us go to Gilgal and there reaffirm the kingship” (1 Samuel 11:14). So all the people went to Gilgal and confirmed Saul as king in the presence of the Lord. There they sacrificed fellowship offerings before the Lord, and Saul and all the Israelites held a great celebration (1 Samuel 11:15). 
Thought for today: trust in God today and prepare for your tomorrow. 
Thought for the future: now is the time to invest in heaven. Where will you spend your eternity?

Samuel then tells Saul where he is to go from there, who he will meet, and that he will be changed into a different person. Saul the son of Kish, reigned as king over Israel from about 1030 to 1010 BC, and should not be confused with Saul from Tarsus (who later became known as Paul the Apostle) who was converted to teach Christianity about 37AD, some seven years after the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ our Lord. 
 
Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on Saul’s head and kissed him, saying “Has not the Lord anointed you leader over His inheritance?” (1 Samuel 10:1). “When you leave me today, you will meet two men near Rachels’ tomb. They will say to you ‘The donkeys you set out to look for have been found. And now your father has stopped thinking about them and is worried about you’” (1 Samuel 10:2). “Then you will go on from there until you reach the great tree of Tabor’ Three men going up to God at Bethel will meet you there” (1 Samuel 10:3). “They will greet you and offer you two loaves of bread, which you will accept from them” (1 Samuel 10:4). “After that you will go to Gibeah of God, where there is a Philistine outpost. As you approach the town, you will meet a procession of prophets coming down from the high place with music being played for them as they prophesy” (1 Samuel 10:5). “The Spirit of the Lord will come upon you in power, and you will prophesy with them, and you will be changed into a different person” (1 Samuel 10:6). “Once these signs are fulfilled, do whatever your hand finds to do, for God is with you” (1 Samuel 10:7). “Go down ahead of me to Gilgal. I will surely come down to you to sacrifice burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, but you must wait seven days until I come to you and tell you what you are to do” (1 Samuel 10:8). 
Thought for today: we can’t see God’s hand, but we can trust His heart.

Song # 1768.1 from Our Gospel In Song Collection by Col Johnston. In the Book of 1 Samuel, we read in chapter 8 that Samuel became very old, and he made his two sons Joel and Abjah judges for Israel. But they did not walk in his ways, and Israel asks for a king like all the other nations, after they reject God as their King. 
The Lord told Samuel “Tell the people asking for a king” (1 Samuel 8:10), “the king who will reign over you will take your sons and make them serve with his chariots and horses” (1 Samuel 8:11). “Some he will assign to be commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and others to plough his ground and reap his harvest, and still others to make weapons of war and equipment for his chariots” (1 Samuel 8:12). “He will take your daughters to be perfumers, cooks and bakers” (1 Samuel 8:13). “He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive groves and give them to his attendants” (1 Samuel 8:14). “He will take a tenth of your grain and of your vintage and give it to his officials and attendants” (1 Samuel 8:15). “Your menservants and maidservants and the best of your cattle and donkeys he will take for his own use” (1 Samuel 8:16). “He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves will become his slaves” (1 Samuel 8:17). “When that day comes, you will cry out for relief from the king you have chosen, and the Lord will not answer you in that day” (1 Samuel 8:18). But the people refused to listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We want a king over us” (1 Samuel 8:19). “Then we shall be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles” (1 Samuel 8:20). When Samuel heard all that the people said, he repeated it before the Lord (1 Samuel 8:21). The Lord answered “Listen to them and give them a king” (1 Samuel 8:22). 
Thought for today: one of God’s greatest presents, is His presence in our life. 
Thought for the future: when you come to know the truth, you will know what is false. Where will you spend your eternity?

Song # 1767.1 from Our Gospel In Song Collection by Col Johnston. We read in 1 Samuel in chapter 8 that Samuel, upon growing old, appointed his two sons as judges for Israel. But both Joel and Abijah did not walk in Samuel’s ways, so the elders and the people asked Samuel for a king to lead them. 
When Samuel grew old, he appointed his sons as judges for Israel (1 Samuel 8:1). But his sons Joel and Abijah (1 Samuel 8:2), did not walk in his ways. They turned aside after dishonest gain and accepted bribes and perverted justice (1 Samuel 8:3). So all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah (1 Samuel 8:4). They said to him “You are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now appoint a king to lead us, such as all the other nations have” (1 Samuel 8:5). But when they said “Give us a king to lead us” they displeased Samuel. So he prayed to the Lord (1 Samuel 8:6). And the Lord told him “Listen to all that the people are saying to you, it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their King” (1 Samuel 8:7). “They have done this from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking me and serving other gods” (1 Samuel 8:8). “Now listen to them, but warn them solemnly and let them know what the king who reigns over them will do” (1 Samuel 8:9). Samuel told the people what the Lord had said (1 Samuel 8:10). “This is what the king who will reign over you will do. #1767.1- Israel Wants A King - (1 Samuel 8:1-13)

Eli was ninety eight years old and when he heard the news he fell off his chair and broke his neck and died. 
A Benjamite ran from the battle line and went to Shiloh, his clothes were torn and he had dust on his head (1 Samuel 4:12). When he arrived, there was Eli sitting on his chair by the side of the road, waiting, because his heart feared for the ark of God. When the man entered the town and told what had happened, the whole town sent up a cry (1 Samuel 4:13). Eli heard the outcry and asked “What is the meaning of this uproar?” The man hurried over to Eli (1 Samuel 4:14), who was ninety eight years old and whose eyes were set so that he could not see (1 Samuel 4:15). The man said to Eli “I have just come from the battle line. I fled from it this very day.” Eli asked “What happened, my son?” (1 Samuel 4:16). The man who brought the news replied “Israel fled before the Philistines, and the army has suffered heavy losses. Also your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God has been captured” (1 Samuel 4:17). When he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell backwards off his chair by the side of the gate. His neck was broken and he died, for he was an old man and heavy. He had led Israel for forty years (1 Samuel 4:18). His daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant and near the time of delivery. When she heard the news that the ark of God had been captured and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she went into labour and gave birth, but was overcome by her labour pains (1 Samuel 4:19). She gave birth to a son (1 Samuel 4:20), and she named the boy Ichabod (1 Samuel 4:21), and as she lay dying she said “The glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured” (1 Samuel 4:22). 
Thought for today: plan for your eternal future today, put your trust in God. 
Thought for the future: a Christian’s inheritance is “for ever” guaranteed. Where will you spend your eternity?

#1761.1- The Death Of Eli - (1 Samuel 4:12-22)

The Lord was with the judge, but when the judge died, the people would turn away from the Lord, as had many others before them. 
After the burial of Joshua and a whole generation gathered to their fathers, a whole new generation grew up, who knew neither the Lord nor what He had done for Israel (Judges 2:8-10). Then the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord and served the Baals (Judges 2:11). They forsook the Lord, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of Egypt. They followed and worshipped various gods of the peoples around them. They provoked the Lord to anger (Judges 2:12), because they forsook Him and served the Baals and the Ashtoreths (Judges 2:13). In His anger against Israel the Lord handed them over to raiders who plundered them. He sold them to their enemies all around, whom they were no longer able to resist (Judges 2:14). Whenever Israel went out to fight, the hand of the Lord was against them to defeat them, just as He had sworn to them. They were in great distress (Judges 2:15). Then the Lord raised up judges, who saved them out of the hands of these raiders (Judges 2:16). Yet they would not listen to their judges and followed other gods and worshipped them. Unlike their fathers, they quickly turned from the way in which their fathers had walked, the way of obedience to the Lord’s commands (Judges 2:17). Whenever the Lord raised up a judge for them, He was with the judge and saved them out of the hands of their enemies as long as the judge lived (Judges 2:18). But when the judge died, the people returned to ways even more corrupt than those of their fathers, following other gods and serving and worshipping them. They refused to give up their evil practices and stubborn ways (Judges 2:19). Therefore the Lord was very angry with Israel (Judges 2:20). 
Thought for today: God’s help is only a prayer away. 
Thought for the future: a newspaper informs, while the Bible transforms. Where will you spend your eternity?

#1758.1- Raising Up Judges -  (Judges 2:8-20)

Song # 1763.1 from Our Gospel In Song Collection by Col Johnston. We read in the Book of 1 Samuel in chapter 4 that the Philistine army defeated the Israelites and the ark of the Lord was captured. 
The Israelites went out to fight against the Philistines (1 Samuel 4:1). The Philistines deployed their forces to meet Israel, and as the battle spread, Israel was defeated by the Philistines (1 Samuel 4:2). When the soldiers returned to camp, the elders of Israel asked “Why did the Lord bring defeat upon us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark of the Lord’s covenant from Shiloh, so that it may go with us and save us from the hands of our enemies” (1 Samuel 4:3). So the people sent men to Shiloh, and they brought back the ark of the covenant of the Lord Almighty (1 Samuel 4:4). When the ark of the Lord’s covenant came into camp, all Israel raised such a great shout that the ground shook (1 Samuel 4:5). Hearing the uproar, the Philistines asked “What’s all this shouting in the Hebrew camp?” When they learned that the ark of the Lord had come into the camp (1 Samuel 4:6), the Philistines were afraid. “A god has come into the camp” they said. “We’re in trouble! Nothing like this has happened before” (1 Samuel 4:7). “Woe to us! Who will deliver us from the hand of these mighty gods? They are the gods who struck the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues in the desert” (1 Samuel 4:8). “Be strong, Philistines! Be men, or you will be subject to the Hebrews, as they have been to you. Be men, and fight!” (1 Samuel 4:9). So the Philistines fought, and the Israelites were defeated (1 Samuel 4:10). The ark of God was captured (1 Samuel 4:11). 
Thought for today: we can please our God through praising Him. 
Thought for the future: if you fail to prepare, then prepare to fail. Where will you spend your eternity?

#1763.1- The Philistines Capture The Ark - (1 Samuel 4:1-11)

Song # 1757.1 from Our Gospel In Song Collection by Col Johnston. In the Book of Joshua in chapter 24 we read of his death at the age of a hundred and ten years, and that he was buried in the land of his inheritance in Ephraim. We also read that the Israelites brought the bones of Joseph with them out of Egypt and he was buried in Shechem. 
Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died at the age of a hundred and ten (Joshua 24:29). They buried him in the land of his inheritance, at Timnath Serah in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash (Joshua 24:30). Israel served the Lord throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him and who had experienced everything the Lord had done for Israel (Joshua 24:31). And Joseph’s bones, which the Israelites had brought up from Egypt, were buried at Shechem in the tract of land that Jacob bought for a hundred pieces of silver from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem. This became the inheritance of Joseph’s descendants (Joshua 24:32). 
Thought for today: no-one is more secure than those in God’s hands. 
Thought for the future: we are only on this earth for a short time, but heaven is eternal. Where will you spend your eternity?

In the Book of Joshua in chapter 24 we read of his death at the age of a hundred and ten years, and that he was buried in the land of his inheritance in Ephraim. We also read that the Israelites brought the bones of Joseph with them out of Egypt and he was buried in Shechem.

Be on your guard tomorrow morning, go into hiding and stay there” (1 Samuel 19:2). “I will go out and stand with my father in the field where you are. I’ll speak to him about you and I will tell you what I find out” (1 Samuel 19:3). Jonathan spoke well of David to Saul his father and said to him “Let not the king do wrong to his servant David, he has not wronged you, and what he has done has benefited you greatly” (1 Samuel 19:4). “He took his life in his hands when he killed the Philistine. He built it according to what is written in the Book of the Law of Moses - an altar of uncut stones, on which no iron tool had been used. There, in the presence of the Israelites, Joshua copied on stones the law of Moses, which he had written (Joshua 8:32). But when they cried out to the Lord, He raised up for them a deliverer, Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, who saved them (Judges 3:9). The Spirit of the Lord came upon him, so that he became Israel’s judge (or leader) and went to war.
