Song # 1901.1 from Our Gospel In Song Collection by Col Johnston. In the Book of Matthew, we read in chapter 7 that Jesus tells us to ask, seek and knock. But we need to put this in context, that is, we may pray for something, but we may not receive it if it is not God’s will. Though God has promised to give us what we need in life, He has not promised to always give us everything we want in life. 
Jesus said “Ask and it will be given to you, seek and you will find, knock and the door will be opened to you” (Matthew 7:7). “For everyone who asks receives, he who seeks ‘finds’, and to him who knocks, the door will be opened” (Matthew 7:8). “Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone?” (Matthew 7:9). “Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake?” (Matthew 7:10). “If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask Him!” (Matthew 7:11). “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you” (Matthew 7:12). 
Thought for today: to show you love God, share your love with others. 
Thought for the future: the Lamb who died for us, is now our Shepherd who leads us. Where will you spend your eternity?

A certain ruler asked Jesus “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” (Luke 18:18). “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No-one is good - except God alone” (Luke 18:19). “You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal, do not give false testimony, honour your father and your mother’” (Luke 18:20). “All these things I have kept since I was a boy” the man said (Luke 18:21). When Jesus heard this, He said to the man “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me” (Luke 18:22). We read from Paul’s letter to the Corinthians about believer’s freedom, where we can make our own choices so long as they are righteous and following God’s commands to us. Although Paul wrote his letter to the Corinthians some 2,000 years ago, his message is still very relevant to us today. 
Everything is permissible, but not everything is beneficial. Everything is permissible, but not everything is constructive (1 Corinthians 10:23). Nobody should seek his own good, but the good of others (1 Corinthians 10:24). Eat anything sold in the meat market without raising questions of conscience (1 Corinthians 10:25), for the earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it (1 Corinthians 10:26). If some unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat whatever is put before you without raising questions of conscience (1 Corinthians 10:27). But if anyone says to you “This has been offered in sacrifice” then do not eat it, both for the sake of the man who told you and for your conscience’ sake. (1 Corinthians 10:28). Why should your freedom be judged by another man’s conscience? (1 Corinthians 10:29). So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31). Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the Church of God (1 Corinthians 10:32). Try to please everybody in every way. Do not seek your own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved (1 Corinthians 10:33). 
Thought for today: Jesus said to love your neighbor as yourself. 
Thought for the future: your love for God can change the world, but don’t let the world change your love for God. Where will you spend your eternity?

#1891.1- The Calling Of Matthew - (Matthew 9:9-13)

You have probably heard the old saying ‘Build upon the Rock, and not upon the sand.’ In the Book of Matthew, we read in chapter 16 that Jesus told Simon Peter, son of Jonah, that Peter is the Rock upon which Jesus will build His Church. 
When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” (Matthew 16:13). They replied “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets” (Matthew 16:14). “But what about you?” Jesus asked. “Who do you say I am?” (Matthew 16:15). Simon Peter answered “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16). Jesus replied “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven” (Matthew 16:17). “And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this Rock I will build my Church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it” (Matthew 16:18). “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven” (Matthew 16:19). Then Jesus warned His disciples not to tell anyone He was the Christ (Matthew 16:20). 
Thought for today: God showed His love for us when He came to earth as a man. 
Thought for the future: for eternal life, it’s not what you know, but who you know. Where will you spend your eternity?

Christians throughout the world celebrate Easter by remembering and giving thanks to our Lord Jesus Christ for what He did for us on the cross. Jesus died, and rose again, for those who follow and trust in Him giving us hope and the promise of eternal life in heaven with Him. Only through His grace and mercy have we been saved, as we cannot save ourselves. In the Book of Luke in Chapter 24 we read that Jesus met two disciples as He walked along they road to Emmaus. 
Two disciples were going to a village called Emmaus, about eleven kilometres from Jerusalem (Luke 24:13). They were talking with each other about everything that had happened (Luke 24:14). As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them (Luke 24:15), but they were kept from recognizing Him (Luke 24:16). He asked them “What are you discussing together as you walk along?” They stood still, their faces downcast (Luke 24:17). One of them, named Cleopas, asked Him “Are you only a visitor to Jerusalem and do not know the things that have happened there in these days?” (Luke 24:18). “What things?” Jesus asked. “About Jesus of Nazareth” they replied. “He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people” (Luke 24:19). “The chief priests and our rulers handed Him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified Him” (Luke 24:20), “but we hoped that He was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place” (Luke 24:21). “In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning” (Luke 24:22), “but didn’t find His body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of Angels, who said He was alive” (Luke 24:23). Jesus said to them “How foolish you are and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken” (Luke 24:25), “did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter His glory?” (Luke 24:26). And beginning with Moses and all the prophets, He explained to them what was said in the Scriptures concerning himself (Luke 24:27). As they approached the village, the disciples urged Jesus to stay with them overnight (Luke 24:28-29). When He was at the table with them, He took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them (Luke 24:30). Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Him, and He disappeared from their sight (Luke 24:31). They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem, found the other Eleven and said “It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon” 
Thought for today: Jesus knows the way, follow Him for eternity. 
Thought for the future: make Christ your mission, not omission. Where will you spend your eternity?

In the Book of Nehemiah we read in chapter 8 that Ezra the scribe read from the Book of the Law of Moses, to all the Israelite people from daybreak till noon. (Nehemiah was sent by the Persian emperor to govern Judah, and frequently prayed to God). 
When the Israelites had settled in their towns, all the people assembled as one in the square before the Water Gate. They told Ezra the scribe to bring out the Book of the Law of Moses, which the Lord had commanded for Israel (Nehemiah 8:1). So Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly (Nehemiah 8:2). He read it aloud from daybreak till noon as he faced the square before the Water Gate in the presence of the men, woman and others who could understand. And all the people listened attentively to the Book of the Law (Nehemiah 8:3). Ezra the scribe stood on a high wooden platform built for the occasion (Nehemiah 8:4). All the people could see him because he was standing above them (Nehemiah 8:5). Ezra praised the Lord, the great God, and all the people lifted their hands and responded “Amen! Amen!” Then they bowed down and worshipped the Lord with their faces to the ground (Nehemiah 8:6). The Levites (Nehemiah 8:7), also read from the Book of the Law of God, making it clear and giving the meaning so that the people could understand what was being read (Nehemiah 8:8). Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and the Levites who were instructing the people said to them all “This day is sacred to the Lord your God. Do not mourn or weep.” For all the people had been weeping as they listened to the words of the Law (Nehemiah 8:9). Nehemiah said “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is sacred to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength” (Nehemiah 8:10). 
Thought for today: we can’t see God’s hand, but we can trust His heart. 
Thought for the future: God’s help is only a prayer away. Where will you spend your eternity?

But living in righteousness will lead us to eternal life. Although Paul wrote his letter to the Romans some 2,000 years ago, his message is still very relevant for us today. 
When you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey - whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness (Romans 6:16). But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly obeyed the form of teaching to which you were entrusted (Romans 6:17). You have been set free from sin and become slaves to righteousness (Romans 6:18). When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness (Romans 6:20). What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death (Romans 6:21). But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life (Romans 6:22). For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 6:23). 
Thought for today: no matter where you turn in life, you can always turn to God. 
Thought for the future: there’s only one way to get into heaven, but that’s all we need. Where will you spend your eternity?

They have no time for God and do not think they need Him in their life. In the Book of Romans we read in chapter 14 that we should not judge or look down on our brother for we will all stand before God’s judgement. 
One man considers one day more sacred than another, while another man considers every day alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind (Romans 14:5). He who regards one day as special, does so to the Lord (Romans 14:6). For none of us lives to himself alone and none of us dies to himself alone (Romans 14:7). If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord (Romans 14:8). For this very reason, Christ died and returned to life so that He might be the Lord to both the dead and the living (Romans 14:9). You then, why do you judge your brother? Or why do you look down on your brother? For we will all stand before God’s judgement seat (Romans 14:10). It is written “As surely as I live” says the Lord “Every knee will bow before me, every tongue will confess to God” (Romans 14:11). So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God (Romans 14:12). Therefore let us stop passing judgement on one another (Romans 14:13). 
Thought for today: value your love for others, so they will love your values. 
Thought for the future: no man is an island, and we will all be judged in time. Where will you spend your eternity?

Solomon made an alliance with Pharaoh, king of Egypt and married his daughter. He brought her into the City of David until he finished building his palace and the temple of the Lord, and the wall around Jerusalem (1 Kings 3:1). The people, however, were still sacrificing at the high places, because a temple had not yet been built for the Name of the Lord (1 Kings 3:2). Solomon showed his love for the Lord by walking according to the statutes of his father David, except that he offered sacrifices and burned incense on the high places (1 Kings 3:3). The king went to Gibeon to offer sacrifices, for that was the most important high place, and Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings on that altar (1 Kings 3:4). At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon during the night in a dream, and God said “Ask for whatever you want me to give you” (1 Kings 3:5). Solomon answered “You have shown great kindness to your servant, my father David, because he was faithful to you and righteous and upright in heart. You have continued this great kindness to him and have given him a son to sit on his throne this very day” (1 Kings 3:6). 
Thought for today: God can do extraordinary things through ordinary people. 
Thought for the future: your love for God can change the world, but don’t let the world change your love for God. Where will you spend your eternity?

#1796.1- Solomon's Dream - (1 Kings 3:1-6)

In the Book of 1 Samuel we read in chapter 15 that Saul did not follow God’s instructions to completely wipe out the Amalekites and all their livestock. But instead, Saul allowed the soldiers to take the good livestock to sacrifice to the Lord. 
Early in the morning Samuel got up and went to meet Saul, but he was told “Saul has gone to Carmel. There he has set up a monument in his own honour and has turned and gone down to Gilgal” (1 Samuel 15:12). When Samuel reached him Saul said “The Lord bless you! I have carried out the Lord’s instructions” (1 Samuel 15:13). But Samuel said “What then is this bleating of sheep in my ears? What is this lowing of cattle that I hear?” (1 Samuel 15:14). Samuel said to Saul “I am the one the Lord sent to anoint you king over His People Israel, so listen now to the message from the Lord” (1 Samuel 15:1). “This is what the Lord Almighty says ‘I will punish the Amalekites for what they did to Israel when they waylaid them as they came up from Egypt’ (1 Samuel 15:2). ‘Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy everything that belongs to them. Do not spare them, put to death men and woman, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys’” (1 Samuel 15:3). He took Agag king of the Amalekites alive, and all his people he totally destroyed with the sword (1 Samuel 15:8). But Saul and the army spared king Agag and the best of the sheep and cattle, the fat calves and lambs- everything that was good. These they were unwilling to destroy completely, but everything that was despised and weak they totally destroyed (1 Samuel 15:9). Then the word of the Lord came to Samuel (1 Samuel 15:10). “I am grieved that I have made Saul king, because he has turned away from me and has not carried out my instructions” (1 Samuel 15:11).

He fought valiantly and defeated the Amalekites, delivering Israel from the hands of those who had plundered them (1 Samuel 14:48).

Saul’s lookouts at Gibeah in Benjamin saw the army melting away in all directions (1 Samuel 14:16). Then Saul said to the men who were with him “Muster the forces and see who has left us.” When they did, it was Jonathan and his armour-bearer who were not there (1 Samuel 14:17). Saul said to Ahijah the priest “Bring the ark of God” (1 Samuel 14:18). While Saul was talking to the priest, the tumult in the Philistine camp increased more and more. So Saul said to the priest “Withdraw your hand” (1 Samuel 14:19). Then Saul and all his men assembled and went to the battle. They found the Philistines in total confusion, striking each other with their swords (1 Samuel 14:20). Those Hebrews who had previously been with the Philistines and had gone up with them to their camp went over to the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan (1 Samuel 14:21). When all the Israelites who had hidden in the hill country of Ephraim heard that the Philistines were on the run, they joined the battle in hot pursuit (1 Samuel 14:22). The second woman’s son died and she took the first woman’s baby as her own. They were still arguing as they stood before king Solomon, prior to the king making his wise ruling with the wisdom he received from God. 
Two woman came to king Solomon and stood before him (1 Kings 3:16). One of them said “My lord, this woman and I live in the same house. I had a baby while she was there with me” (1 Kings 3:17). “The third day after my child was born, this woman also had a baby” (1 Kings 3:18). “During the night this woman’s son died because she lay on him” (1 Kings 3:19). “So she got up in the middle of the night and took my son from my side while I was asleep. She put her dead son next to me” (1 Kings 3:20). “The next morning, I got up to nurse my son - and he was dead! But when I looked at him closely in the morning light, I saw it wasn’t the son I had borne” (1 Kings 3:21). The other woman said “No! The living one is my son, the dead one is yours” (1 Kings 3:22). The king said “Bring me a sword.” So they brought a sword for the king (1 Kings 3:24). The king then gave an order “Cut the living child in two and give half to one and half to the other” (1 Kings 3:25). The woman whose son was alive was filled with compassion for her son and she said to the king “Please my lord, give her the living baby! Don’t kill him.” But the other woman said “Neither I nor you shall have him. Cut him in two!” (1 Kings 3:26). Then king Solomon gave his ruling “Give the living baby to the first woman. Do not kill him, she is his mother” (1 Kings 3:27). When all Israel heard the verdict the king had given, they held the king in awe, because they saw that he had wisdom from God to administer justice (1 Kings 3:28).

Will you hand them over to me?” The Lord answered him “Go, for I will surely hand the Philistines over to you” (2 Samuel 5:19). So David went to Baal Perazim, and there he defeated them. He said “As waters break out, the Lord has broken out against my enemies before me.” So that place was called Baal Perazim (2 Samuel 5:20). The Philistines abandoned their idols there, and David and his men carried them off (2 Samuel 5:21). Once more the Philistines came up and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim (2 Samuel 5:22). So David enquired of the Lord, and the Lord answered “Do not go straight up, but circle round behind them and attack them in front of the balsam trees” (2 Samuel 5:23). “As soon as you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, move quickly, because that will mean the Lord has gone out in front of you to strike the Philistine army” (2 Samuel 5:24). So David did as the Lord commanded him, and he struck down the Philistines all the way from Gibeon to Gezer (2 Samuel 5:25).
