Romans 12:1-4 Believe, Grow, Live Time T Grow: Worship Pt. 2

The abundant life promise of Jesus in John 10:10 is absolute.  There is no variance of this life for one person or another, no levels, no getting more of it, and no secrets.  What is abundantly clear is a misunderstanding of what it is, and why it’s such a great promise.  Today we will define the abundant life by understanding the context of Jesus’s words and how we get it. Background: All of John 10:1-18 hangs together as a single discourse, split up into three connected shepherd parables, the entire shepherd discourse is a direct response to the Pharisees’ mistreatment of one of Jesus’ sheep, the blind man (John 9).  Jesus goes directly from condemning the Pharisees in John 9:39-40 to a set of parables that contrasted his own leadership with that of the Pharisees.   A.  The Abundant Life Comes From Jesus Not Man  VS 7 – 8 1.  The “door of the sheep” is in reference to the door keeper of the public sheep pens that held multiple sheep where the door keeper would allow the shepherds in after keeping the sheep through the night.  Or, out on the country side in good weather the shepherd would build a small wall around the sheep of rocks with one opening that he would lay across as the door. 2.  “All who ever came before Me” – acting as the door (or a door) thieves and robbers.     B.  The Abundant Life Can Only Be Enjoyed In Jesus VS 9 ​1.  As “the door” – Jesus is the only way to be saved. ​2.  Salvation is pictured from the sheep’s point of view ​​a.  they can go in and out ​​b.  and find pasture     C.  The Abundant Life VS 10 1.  Jesus here compares and contrasts Himself against the thief (who’s identity is found in verse 8)  Note:  No one ever identified the thief as the devil until the mid-1800s based on an error by Thomas Aquinas in commenting on another scholars work.   2.  The Thief’s purpose – Steal, Kill, and Destroy (via false teaching) 3.  Jesus purpose – go give life and to give it exceeding expectations

I’ve been told what to take off. I’ve been told what I’ve become in this new man. I’ve been told what to put on, and now I’m told how to wear it. One thing to put on the uniform, it’s another thing to wear it. 
Context: Paul is explaining that they don’t need to listen to an new teaching because they have already been transformed into a new man. He explains to them what to take off (the old man) and what to put on as the new man. Now he takes us into how to wear the uniform we put on. 
A. Love – is the overcoat, the outer garment that protects everything else.

Col. 1:24 – 26​What Makes Jesus So Important​Suffering for the Reconciler

Repeatedly we have John saying we have to love our brothers. In fact, he states we are commanded to love our brothers. The implication of this commandment can’t be more over stated than the passage we have before us – if we don’t, we can’t say we love God. We’d be lying. This is deeper than you think, let’s explore this theologically and philosophically. 
Background: The Churches in Asia minor are confronted by this early form of Gnosticism that would lend lip service to having a relationship with God. An intellectual assent to God’s existence with claims to loving Him while mistreating the brethren that didn’t agree with them. 
1. Can a church member claim they love God and lie about it? 
Let’s examine Cain and his love for God and his brother Abel. Genesis 4 w/ Hebrews 11 
9 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” 
He said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?” 
 
 2. Is the love of God a private matter? What about your faith, is it private? 
 
 3. When we examine the actual commandment from Jesus to love, what sticks out the most? 
John 1334 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Repeatedly we have John saying we have to love our brothers.  In fact, he states we are commanded to love our brothers.  The implication of this commandment can’t be more over stated than the passage we have before us – if we don’t, we can’t say we love God.  We’d be lying. 1 John 4:20 – 21​The Fellowship​No Faith, No Fellowship

Here is a thought – What is should be the most feared thing in all of life? I’m not talking reverential fear for God. I’m saying what should you fear more than anything else? John will tell us what it is and how not to fear it. 
Background: Now that I have believed God’s love and can immerse myself in it (VS 16), John wants the reader to understand why the truly saved have no need to fear judgment. 
I. In Fellowship we Develop Boldness 
“perfected” – perfected perfectly AMOUNG US (not in me or us) 
25 But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God [a]is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. 412 No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us 
“boldness” – παρρησία = to speak openly, boldly, free from fear

 II. The Identity of Christ’s Love

VS 17 is the Key!! Perfected love creates boldness (no fear) of judgment 
Perfect love casts out fear of judgment – to fear judgment is to fear punishment

CORRECTION: Original text should read – “We love each other because He first loved us.” 
Not a perfect love for others, we get in the way, but a growing love that is being perfected perfectly in fellowship.

Love is the reason for the status.

When we get closer to God one thing that we should consider is the way we stay close and continue growing. The writer of Hebrews 10:32 says we should hold fast the confession of our faith. Faith is always manifested in actions and according to today’s lesson those actions must be public. To be private with your faith is bad with consequences. 
Background: Jesus is sending His disciples out to spread the Word and prepares them for the suffering that will accompany anyone who does the same. His message is simply be bold, don’t deny they know Him. 
EAR GOD: Whatever Jesus reveals to you about Him is to be publicized!! 
1) True believers will expose their belief in words and deeds 
2) Our words explain what we believe 
3) Our actions prove that our belief is real. 
I. Group One: Faithful 
If this - “whoever confesses Me before men” = 
 
Then this – “him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven” = 
 
1) At the Judgment Seat of Christ 1 Cor. 3 14 If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward.

2 Tim. 211 This is a faithful saying: For if we died with Him, We shall also live with Him. 12 If we endure, We shall also reign with Him. If we deny Him, He also will deny us.13 If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself.

Matt. 10:32 – 33​Keeping the Faith​The Public Christian

Proverbs 21:9 &amp; 25:24 are a repeat of each other and often cause for misunderstanding with 
women and men. Although Solomon mentions a woman or the context may indicate a wife who 
is contentious, most people think in terms of a woman who has become this way while living in 
the house. Not so… let’s examine and see this applies for everyone. 
Background: Solomon is writing this! The man had 700 wives. 
Contentious – quarrelsome, a person who desires argument over peace for perceived control 
of others. 
1. Why is it better to get on the roof and go to the corner instead of being in the house? 
 
2. Does the Bible deal only with contentious women? 
 
3. What is the difference between a contentious woman and a contentious man? 
 
4. Prov. 18 22  He who finds a wife finds a good thing, And obtains favor from the Lord. 
What is a wife, and can she be a contentious woman? 
 
Irritation – the real issue with a contentious woman 
Prov. 19 13  A foolish son is the ruin of his father, And the contentions of a wife are a continual 
[c] dripping(irritation). 
Typical responses to irritation: 
1. Avoidance 2. Talk to a third party 3. Attempt to maintain composure 4. Force serenity 
 
Biblical Way to Deal with Irritation – contentious woman/ or anyone. 
Phil. 2 3  Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let 
each esteem others better than himself. 4  Let each of you look out not only for his own 
interests, but also for the interests of others 
1. I must be humble, not conceited 
2. I must lift them up above me 
3. I still look out for my interests and theirs.

As we roll into 2020 many of us haven’t had what we thought was a great 2019. First mistake – stop using time as a measuring stick. Use time as a reference point, your life’s journey is more than the 2019-time frame. Second, don’t lose hope, please use wisdom to gain it! For those who had a better than expected 2019, stop using time as a measuring stick, things can change. What do you do when you begin to lose hope? 
1. EAT WISDOM LIKE HONEY VS 13 – 14a GREAT!! Something good for me and taste good to… EAT IT!! 
 
 
The word of God is like a bowl of honey placed on a table in front of you. Until you eat it, it does you NO GOOD!!

Prov. 10:2-5​Living Skills​Ill-Gotten Gain 
Trying to make ends meet! Working and struggling, or looking for lightning in a bottle. This is life – paying bills, taxes, fees, and trying to put food on the table. You want to be comfortable and live the “good life”. Let’s see if we are going about it the right way. 
Ill-Gotten Gain (wealth accumulated through immoral methods) 
​A. Wealth is not bad 
 
 
​B. Profit nothing – you can’t take it with you. 
 
 
Righteous Character (One who renders to all their due, God and man. A cause and effect.) 
​A. Ill-gotten gain in contrast to righteousness 
 
 
 
​B. The Delivery From Death (more profitable) 
 
 
The Righteous Soul Won’t Go Hungry VS 3a 
 
 
Ill-Gotten Gain is Rejected VS 3b 
 
 
How do I avoid being in a poor position? 
4 He who has a slack hand becomes poor, Slacker – one who avoids work 
But the hand of the diligent makes rich. Diligent – one who works hard 
5 He who gathers in summer is a wise son; Not lazy = wise (lazy days of summer) 
He who sleeps in harvest is a son who causes shame. Lazy = foolish

Can we change God's Mind? Like in a crisis? How is this for an answer - NO! and YES? Prayer is a paradoxical phenomenon for most theologians. We know God knows all and knows what He is going to do. But yet we find repeated stories in Scripture where it seems the All Knowing One changes His mind. I think we will discover that He doesn't change even when we experience it is as a change. 
 
The key is in understanding God's Permissive Will - giving man an option verse God's Decretive will - God's plan for everything 
 
Who was Hezekiah? King of the Southern Kingdom- Judah, a king of good character who was in a Crisis. See Chpt. 18:5-16 
 
Prayer question: Where is Hezekiah? Who has he been listening to? What is he doing? 
 
The Crisis VS 1: Death is coming to Hezekiah but his house is not in order. 
 
Your crisis may not be God's concern.....
