Judges 8:4-35 The Subtle Path of Self-Destruction

1 Samuel 14:6 - Jonathan said to the young man who carried his armor, "Come, let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised. It may be that the Lord will work for us, for nothing can hinder the Lord from saving by many or by few." 
 
In any battle, our confidence is ultimately to be in God alone, and not in anyone or anything else. 
 
Judges 6:15-16 - And he said to him, "Please, Lord, how can I save Israel? Behold, my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house." And the Lord said to him, "But I will be with you, and you shall strike the Midianites as one man." 
 
Even in our weakness, God is able to fight our battles even before they begin. 
 
2 Corinthians 4:6-7 - For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. 
 
Sometimes God's plans may not make sense to us, but when we trust Him, He is faithful.

No matter how much the Lord blesses us, we are still prone to worship other things.

God can use us not because we are fearless, but because we overcome fear through faith.

The safest place is to be in the center of God's will for your life and we give all fear to Him.

Exodus 14:31-15:1 - Israel saw the great power that the Lord used against the Egyptians, so the people feared the Lord, and they believed in the Lord and in his servant Moses. Ephesians 6:12 - For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

As we rejoice in Christ's victory, we battle the spiritual forces that work against the good news.

Judges 5:1-31 - The Value of Mothers

1 Corinthians 12:4-5,11 - Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord .... All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills. 
 
Even when there's a lack of leadership, God leads His people and raises up whom He chooses. 
 
1 Samuel 17:46-47 - This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand .... that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, and that all this assembly may know that the Lord saves not with sword and spear. For the battle is the Lord's, and he will give you into our hand." 
 
True faith is when we can trust God even when there seems to be many reasons to fear.

Behind every deliverer, it was God who was empowering and saving His people! 
 
Hebrews 12:10 - For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness. 
Judges 2:19 - But whenever the judge died, they turned back and were more corrupt than their fathers, going after other gods, serving them and bowing down to them. They did not drop any of their practices or their stubborn ways. 
 
God's desire is to help us become more like Jesus, that we may share in His rest forever.

Though we may stubbornly and repeatedly disobey Him, God shows us incredible grace. 
 
Genesis 17:7-8 - And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you. And I will give to you and to your offspring after you the land of your sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession, and I will be their God." 
Hebrews 12:5-7 - "My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him. for the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives." It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating ;you as sons. 
 
God's grace can also be seen in the way He might discipline those He loves. 
 
Deuteronomy 7:1-4 - "When the Lord your God brings you into the land that you are entering to take possession of it....You shall not intermarry with them, giving your daughters to their sons or taking their daughters for your sons, for they would turn away your sons from following me, to serve other gods. Then the anger of the Lord would be kindled against you. 
2 Corinthians 6:14-15 - Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?....Or what portion does a believer share with an unbeliever? 
Hebrews 12:10-11 - [God] disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness. For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. 
 
In everything God does, His desire is that we become lifelong followers of Him.

While I cannot excuse my sin because of my past, I can live by God's grace in the future.

He fashions it with hammers and works it with his strong arm...He plants a cedar and the rain nourishes it. Then it becomes fuel for a man. He takes a part of it and warms himself; he kindles a fire and bakes bread. Also he makes a god and worships it; he makes it an idol and falls down before it. Half of it he burns in the fire. Over the half he eats meat; he roasts it and is satisfied. Also he warms himself...And the rest of it he makes in a god, his idol, and falls down to it and worships it. He prays to it and says, "Deliver me, for you are my god!" 
Joshua 23:15-16 - But just as all the good things that the Lord your God promised concerning you have been fulfilled for you, so the Lord will bring upon you all the evil thins, until he has destroyed you from off this good land that the Lord your God has given you, if you transgress the covenant of the Lord your God, which he commanded you, and go and serve other gods and bow down to them. Then the anger of the Lord will kindled against you, and you shall perish quickly from off the good land that he has given to you." 
Judges 17:6 - In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes 
 
Even when we suffer the consequences of our own sin, God disciplines us in His love..
