Christmas Message Matthew 1:18-25 - If Jesus Is Coming, Why Is Everything So Messed Up?

Matthew 3:7-9 - But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, hew said to them, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not presume to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father,' for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham. 
Romans 5:8 - but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 
Luke 18:9, 13-14 - He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt....But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me, a sinner!' I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted." 
 
In Christ, we don't rely on who we are or on anything we've done - we're only sinners saved by grace.

Romans 3:20 - For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin. 
Hebrews 10:3-4 - But in these sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. 
 
We are able to stand before a holy God because of Jesus's death which paid for our sins.

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. 
 
People who are not rooted in God's salvation by grace can be troubled by hardships or led astray by false teaching. 
 
2 Timothy 4:3-4 - For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. 
Luke 22:31-32 - "Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail." 
1 Corinthians 10:12 - Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stand take heed lest he fall.

As we lament the depravity in our world, we must acknowledge our own sin and repent of it. 
 
Judges 2:11-15 - And the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the LORD and served the Baals. And they abandoned the LORD, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt. They went after other gods, from among the gods of the peoples who were around them, and bowed down to them. And they provoked the LORD to anger. They abandoned the LORD and served the Baals and the Ashtaroth. So the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he gave them over to plunderers, who plundered them. And he sold them into the hand of their surrounding enemies, so that they could no longer withstand their enemies. Spiritual revival begins when God's people examine their own lives and humble themselves before God. 
 
Hebrews 10:24-25 - And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. 
 
As believers, what we know from God's Word must be matched by our love and good deeds.

Beware of using religion to serve your own interests, rather than worshiping the one true God.

Prosperity is never an end in itself, but can be used by God to florify Him by blessing others.

When we choose to go our own way with what God gives us, there will be consequences.

When our love for other things supersedes our love for God, we are vulnerable to losing what matters most.

Ephesians 4:11-12 - And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ. 
 
When we understand what Jesus has done for us and love Him in return, we will desire to do His will.

Judges 16:1-31 - Samson: The Reluctant Hero

Judges 14:3-4 - But his father and mother said to him, "Is there not a woman among the daughters of your relatives, or among all our people, that you must go to take a wife from the uncircumcised Philistines?" But Samson said to his father, "Get her for me, for she is right in my eyes." His father and mother did not know that it was from the Lord, for he was seeking an opportunity against the Philistines. We must not capitulate to our cultures's demands to ignore God's truth and to accept what is sinful. 
 
Psalm 22:1-2 - My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning? O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer, and by night, but I find no rest. 
Psalm 44:9-11 - But you have rejected us and disgraced us and have not gone out with our armies. You have made us turn back from the foe, and those who hate us have gotten spoil. You have made us like sheep for slaughter and have scattered us among the nations.

God is able to handle our heartfelt emotions--don't just complain, ask Him for what you need.

It would be wiser to obey the Lord as no plan or purpose of His can be thwarted.

However much God may bless us, it is important that we stay faithful and humble always. 
 
James 1:12-14 - Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him. Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am being tempted by God," for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. 
 
Despite the hardship and turmoil that might come into our lives, it is God's grace that prevails.

Because of His great mercy, God may intervene even when we haven't asked for it or expected it. 
 
Exodus 15:11 - "Who is like you, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like you, majestic in holiness, awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders? 
Revelation 19:4-5 - And the twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God who was seated on the throne, saying, "Amen. Hallelujah!" And from the throne came a voice saying, "Praise our God, all you his servants, you who fear him, small and great." 
 
Do not allow what we do for God interfere with being in His holy presence through prayer and worship. 
 
Exodus 33:20 - "But,"[the LORD] said, "you cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and live." 
Matthew 1:21 - She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins. 
2 Corinthians 4:16-18 - So we do not lose heart, Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us and eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.
