Discouragement is a reality in a fallen world. Lost men know discouragement regularly. But it's not just lost men who get discouraged. And it's not just unfaithful Christians who get discouraged. Discouragement is a reality even among godly people. 
We have been brought, by God's grace, into the truth. We know the truth. We know we should cling to the truth. We know that our minds, and our affections, and our wills, should always be informed by the truth. But the Bible acknowledges the fact that even those who know the truth are sometimes overwhelmed by the difficulty of their circumstances. We are, after all, just dust. We meet with our own weakness in those season of discouragement. 
Be encouraged. If you know Jesus, you haven't seen your best day yet, and when it arrives it is going to be an eternal one.

A Reason to be Encouraged- Proverbs 29:16

The Father perfected His Son, during the course of the earthly life and ministry of Jesus.  He did this during the course of Christ rescuing us, and He did this through Christ’s own suffering. AND IT WAS PERFECTLY FITTING. The pathway set before the Son of God, by His Father, was a pathway that led to Jesus beaming everything that we needed as a Savior, and everything that we need as our Great high Priest.

What a Savior! - Hebrews 2:11-18

Why a Messiah who suffered? To this day unbelievers mock the idea that the suffering of Jesus declared in the gospel message makes any sense. It is an offense, it is utter nonsense to most people on two basic fronts. 
 
First, there is the offense in stating that man needs such a Savior. It is offensive to many to say that all people are unacceptable to God by their very nature. That by nature and by choice, men are an offense to God deserving of God’s wrath. The second offense to the sensibilities of most people is the idea that even if there WAS such a dilemma (and there is), that it would be solved through the Son of God becoming a man and then dying on a cross. 
 
There should be no doubt then, that for 1st century Jewish Christians, and especially for 2nd and 3rd generation believers, the suffering of Jesus became an attack point for those trying to dissuade them from their faith. 
 
In this section of Hebrews, the writer takes issue with the idea that perhaps the gospel message represents something unworthy of God. In this sermon, Pastor Caldwell will look at Christ’s suffering with God the Father in the place of focus.

Making Sense of The Suffering of Christ - Hebrews 2:10-18

When our eyes are not fixed on the preeminence of Jesus, and on the gravity of the gospel, we are in danger of drifting away from what we have heard in the gospel. The preeminence of Jesus deserves that we give the gospel our full attention, and the preservation of our faith demands that we give the gospel our full attention. It is of utmost importance to understand that we fix our eyes on Jesus by fixing our eyes on ALL that God has revealed concerning His Son. Jesus not only represents salvation for mankind, He represents making sense of mankind. He is the organizing principle, He is the logical center for our very existence.

The Bible has a lot to say about the desire for wisdom. Wisdom can be sought, and must be sought, but always in a spirit of devotion and dependence. Knowledge by itself is not wisdom. Experience by itself is not wisdom. Training and mentoring by itself cannot produce wisdom. 
If you desire wisdom from God, if you are learning wisdom, if you value wisdom, then you must guard your heart with all vigilance.

Godly Wisdom and The Guarded Heart- Proverbs 4:20-27

The writer of Hebrews is offering scriptural proofs of the Son's superiority. Why does he select these quotes? And why is he doing all of this? What drives his interest in setting the superiority of Christ over the angels of God? He has chosen these verses because of two factors. (1) Their identification with Messianic expectations. They exalt Jesus as the fulfillment of the promises made concerning the everlasting Davidic king. (2) The identification of the Messiah with Yahweh. This Davidic king is divine.

Adultery in the Heart - Matthew 5:27-30

We come now to what is the climax of everything we have seen so far in this passage. Each step in this sevenfold description of Jesus has demonstrated His preeminence. 
 
He is the heir of all things 
He is the creator of all things 
He is the radiance of God's glory 
He is the exact imprint of God's nature 
He is the sustainer of all things 
He has made purification of sins 
 
Now, the preeminence of Jesus could not be more clearly expressed than by these words: 
"He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high."

We return to the seven-fold description of God’s glorious Son. Pastor Richard Caldwell expounds Hebrews 1 describing Jesus as the exact imprint of the nature of God. 
 
To say the Son is the exact imprint, or the representation, of the Father’s nature, could initially sound to us as if the Son is not God in a way equal with the Father. After all it says he is the “representation” of God’s nature. Doesn’t that imply that He is in some way inferior to the Father? Not at all! There is no inferiority in the Son, and Pastor Caldwell explains why.

Effective ministry and effective, godly living requires maturity and wisdom. There is a holy shrewdness that is required.  It is a wisdom that understands that God does things, in the midst of our every day activities, in the midst of the use of normal means, that we never planned for, in some cases never dreamed of, and that we could never reduplicate.

God's Work & Our Work - Luke 22:35-38

How we listen to Scripture matters. The question before us is whether we are a doer of the Word of God, or someone who merely listens to it. The question is whether or not we are receiving Scripture, whether or not we are experiencing the lifesaving power of Scripture, or we are self-deceived in our listening.

The Outcome of Our Approach to God's Word - James 1:22-23

A part of faithful preaching is striving to make sure that you are not misunderstood. This is especially true when you preach and teach with a shepherd’s heart. You recognize the traps the people fall prey to. You recognize the common ways that precious truths are misunderstood and you strive to save people from those misunderstandings. 
 
That’s what James is concerned with in verses 22-25. You must put away sin in all its forms. You must assume a humble posture for the purpose of receiving Scripture. But if you think that RECEIVING Scripture is just to listen to it acceptingly you will have misunderstood, and missed the point entirely. It’s as if James says, “You here me say that you must receive Scripture, but now I want to be sure that you don’t misunderstand what that means.” 
 
The Holy Spirit through James will teach us that to receive Scripture is to listen for the purpose of practice. You are not someone who receives Scripture unless you are a practitioner of Scripture.
