The most important issue in the believer's life, at any given moment, is how we think about God. There is nothing more important than how we think about God. That is the main issue in James 1:13-18. For all that James discusses here, the one issue that reigns supreme throughout the entire section is the issue of how we actually think about God. When mindful of temptation, guard your thoughts about God. When mindful of temptation, remember how temptation operates. When mindful of temptation, don't be deceived about God's intentions. The Spirit of God is making plain to us that our thoughts about God must be accurate. We see this in verses 16-18.

The Unchanging God - James 1:16-18

Temptation for me is the same as temptation for you, is the same as temptation for anyone. This is the experience of every human being. There is no question as to whether or not we have experienced such a thing, and temptation operates the same way in every person’s life. Trials and temptations arrive in the same events, in the same life, but involve different dynamics.  A trial (or a test) is an opportunity for Christian obedience. A temptation is a solicitation to disobedience. God is the author of one.  God is never the author of the other. God tests.  God DOES NOT tempt.

How Temptation Operates & Is Overcome - James 1:13-18

Every trial becomes a platform for temptation. Every test is also an opportunity that our spiritual enemy takes to offer us ways of disobedience. Or for our flesh to be attracted to that which would represent disobedience to God.  These verses have to do with temptation.  They have to do with how WE THINK about temptation.

When Trials Turn To Temptation - James 1:13-18

One of the great issues that faces every new generation of believers is how the people of God are to respond to the spiritual dangers that arise against the church. The New Testament is clear that we are going to deal with dangers that arise from within the church, and we are going to deal with dangers that seek to make inroads into the church from outside it. This doesn't mean that each generation is tasked with coming up with a way to deal with it. God has revealed the way.

Trials often represent a confusing time in the life of a believer. There are many things that we should not be confused about. We have God given revelation concerning our trials. God has given us perfectly firm ground that we can stand on when we are being tested.

One of the amazing realities of being a Christian is that we recognize that we are a people who have been brought into the knowledge of the truth. We have been brought into the light. We once lived our lives in the dark. In that condition we had no experiential access to the light of God's truth. 
 
The result of God's amazing grace to us is that we now have access to perfectly reliable information as to what is taking place in the present age. In verse 3 of James Chapter 1, we see the graciousness of our God in that He gives us information that makes the command of verse 2 reasonable.

Surviving & Thriving In Life's Trials, Part 2 - James 1:3-4

The message of Nahum is a simple one. Its message is straightforward and is meant to be heeded in a straightforward manner. The message running through it all is that if you are the enemy of God, your ultimate ruin is certain, but if you are one of God's people, your ultimate triumph is certain.

How does the believer remain faithful to the Lord through all of the struggles that life brings?  The apostle Paul, in his 2nd letter to Timothy, encouraged Timothy to remain faithful and endure the hardship of life as a believer.   In this letter to Timothy, we will observe four truths that will safeguard us from being and/or becoming immobilized because of the hardships that life brings as a believer.

Wrath or Refuge - Nahum 1:9-15

None of the disciples of Jesus expected a resurrection, and following the resurrection, they struggled to understand it or believe it.  In these verses, God is the one taking the initiative to make sure that they "get" it. God is at work establishing the faith of His people in the resurrection of Jesus. God has done this through visual evidence (an empty tomb), through angelic testimony and, now, He is about to do it through the testimony of the risen Jesus Himself.

The idea of a time machine has fascinated many. Although theologically bankrupt, the ability to be transported back in time and see and experience monumental moments in the history of the world is something many would love to do. 
 
But knowing this can never happen, unless God chooses in heaven to give us glimpses of things we wish we had seen during our life in this phase of our existence, the next best thing is to listen to the people who were there. Eyewitness accounts, first person accounts of tremendous moments in history, is our only way to go back in time and to experience those moments. 
 
In the case of biblical narratives we not only meet with eyewitness accounts of the events that we study, we meet with a divine account, an inerrant account, of what really happened. In this sermon, the Holy Spirit takes us to the place of the crucifixion and we watch Jesus die.

Behold The Lamb, Part 1 - Luke 23:44-49

"Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted." Who are these mourners in Matthew 5:4?  They are the same people characterized in other scripture as the poor in spirit, as meek, hungry, thirsty, merciful, pure in heart, peacemakers and persecuted. We have lived lives of willful rebellion against a good and hold God. As a result, we cry out to God under the weight of the knowledge and conviction of our sin. We recognize that we have sinned and the seriousness of our sins, and are moved by that recognition.

One man listens and the other man shouts blasphemies. And finally, one man believes, and finds forgiveness and life in the man who dies on the cross right next to his. He finds life in a dying companion.

God’s Grace On Death Row - Luke 23:39-42

This passage in Luke is so rich, so packed with things we want to pay attention to, it's somewhat difficult to know how to approach it. It could be taught in a number of ways, but what I want to point out is something that sort of operates under the surface of what is most prominent in these verses. Luke presents this in a way that is meant to connect us with what can be seen of the Messiah when we think in terms of the Old Testament scriptures.
