"Three Gifts From Your Heavenly Father" Romans 8:14-19 
"For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. 15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. 16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: 17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and join-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. 18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. 19 For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God." (Romans 8:14-19) 
I. The Gift of DIRECTION 
"But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any an have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his." (Romans 8:9)

A Life that Pleases God, 1 Thessalonians 4:9-12 
Intro: How to live a life that pleases God is the overriding theme of the first twelve verses of 1 Thessalonians Chapter 4. Verses 1-8 speak about sexual purity, and verses 9-12 provide practical instruction on how to maintain right relationships with our brothers and sisters in Christ, as well as with unbelievers. 
 
I. Love’s CHARACTER v 9 
 1st. The word “but” abruptly changes the subject from sanctification to brotherly love 
 2nd. The phrase “brotherly love” does not refer to love within one’s family but, rather, sincere affection for one’s brothers and sisters within the church. 
 3rd. We find a good example of such love in the first church in Jerusalem (Acts 2:44-45; cf. 4:32) 
Acts 2:44-45 
44 And all that believed were together, and had all things common; 
45 And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need. 
Acts 4:32 And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common. 
 4th. Notice: No one had taught them about love; they were “taught by God” through the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit. 
 A. GROW in love more and more—why? v 9a 
 1. Because you are taught by GOD to do so v 9b 
II. Love’s CULTIVATION v 10 
 A. It starts with a loving ATTITUDE v 10 
 *He did not have to urge them to love the brethren, because they were already doing so. 
 B. It is Christ, LIVING and WORKING in believers through the Holy Spirit 
 C. It is Christ who causes us to EXCEL, OVERFLOW, or possess a superabundance of God’s love for others. 
 D. It’s only through the enablement of the Holy Spirit can we love someone who PERSECUTES us. 
1 John 3:11 For this is the message ye heard from the beginning, that ye should love one another. 
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 
1 John 4:7-8 7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. 8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. 
1 John 3:11 For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. 
John 13:34-35; 15:12, 17 
1 John 3:14 We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death. 
1 John 3:16 Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. 
John 13:35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. 
III. Love’s CONDUCT v 11-12 
 A. Aspire to lead a QUIET life v 11a 
 B. Mind your own BUSINESS v 11b Why? Because it can: 
 1. DISRUPT 2. DIVIDE 3. Sow DISCONTENTMENT 
 4. BLEMISH our Christian testimonies all within the body of Christ 
 C. WORK with your own hands v 11c *Note also what Paul added: “as we command you.” 
 D. Paul provided tow purposes for his exhortations: v 12 
 1. That you may WIN the respect of outsiders v 12a 
 2. That you may not LACK necessities v 12b

“BORN AGAIN” 1 John 5:1-5, Introduction (Part 1 of a Mini Series) 
Intro: Being born of God means a spiritual birth, a rebirth of one’s spirit, a new life, a renewed soul, a regenerated spirit. It is the regeneration and renewal of one’s spirit and behavior. 
2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. 
It is the enduement of a new life, of a godly nature. 
2 Peter 1:4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. 
The new birth is so radical a change in a person’s life that it can be described only as being born again. Something so wonderful happens to the soul that it is just like a new birth. It is a spiritual birth, a birth beyond the grasp of man’s hands and efforts. It is so radical, so life-changing, and so wonderful that it can be wrought only by the love and power of God Himself. 
 
The New Testament teaching on the new birth is rich and full. 
 THE NEW BIRTH IS A NECESSITY 
 A. A person will never SEE the kingdom of God 
John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. 
 B. A person will never ENTER the kingdom of God 
John 3:5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 
 C. Unless he is BORN AGAIN John 3:7 
II. THE NEW BIRTH IS A SPIRITUAL BIRTH 
 A. The birth of a new POWER and SPIRIT in life 
 B. It is not REFORMATION of the old nature 
Romans 6:6 
 C. It is the actual CREATION of a new birth within (spiritually)

 D. A person is SPIRITUALLY born again 
 1. By WATER even the Spirit John 3:5

 1. By BELIEVING that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God 1 John 5:1; John 3:14-15 
 2. By the GOSPEL as it is shared by believers 1 Corinthians 4:15 
 3. By the WORD OF GOD or by the Word of TRUTH 1 Peter 1:23; James 1:18 
IV. THE NEW BIRTH IS A CHANGED LIFE 
 A. A totally NEW life 
 B. A person PROVES that he is born again 
 1. By doing RIGHTEOUS acts 1 John 2:29 (cf. Eph. 2:10; 4:24) 
 2. By not PRACTICING sin 1 John 3:9; 1 John 5:18 
 3. By LOVING other believers 1 John 4:7 
 4. By KEEPING himself 1 John 5:18 
 5. By POSSESSING the divine SEED or NATURE 1 John 3:1; 1 Peter 1:23; 2 Peter 1:14 (cf. Col. 1:27)

“Why Did Jesus Go To The Cross?” 1 Peter 3:18 
I. The Substitutionary Purpose of the Cross (1 Peter 3:18) 
 A. We are the unjust this verse of Scripture refers to: 
 1. We are sinful by Birth 
Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: 
 1. We are sinful by Nature 
 2. We are sinful by Practice 
 B. God is Holy and cannot overlook sin. If God were to overlook sin, He would no longer be a holy God. 
 C. Sin brings a Penalty, and sin must be punished 
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. 
 D. Not only is God holy, but God is also loving; so, God must have a way that He can have sin punished and yet have us forgiven, and that method is substitution 
 E. There must be someone who pays the penalty for sin and that someone is Jesus 
Romans 3:25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

I. THE SOLDIER’S “TASK” 
 A. To FOLLOW

 A. He was a SINNER v 7b (Ro. 3:9-18, 23; 5:8, 12) 
 B. He REPENTED, changed his life—TOTALLY v 8

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. 
 
IV. Conversion means: To LOOK to Jesus as the SAVIOUR v 9-10 
 Note: Why is that? 
 A. Because He is The One who proclaims SALVATION v 9

Remember God’s guidance through the wilderness wanderings 
 a. God’s humbling you and testing you

 *Man’s life does not depend on bread alone

 1.) You forget that it was God who saved you 
 2.) You forget that it was God who led you through the wilderness wanderings (a picture of the world with all its trials)

“SHALL WE SIN THAT GRACE MAY ABOUND” Romans 6:1-23 Intro: In chapter six of Romans, Paul discusses Holiness and Sanctification and the way for the believer to be free from sin, by knowing his position in Christ and living out that position and not having a license to sin. It’s divided into three parts. 
I. He Is To KNOW His Position In Christ (v 1-10) 
 A. The believer and the question of LICENSE (v 1-2) 
 B. Know first: By position, the believer is BAPTIZED, placed into Christ (v 3-5) 
 C. Know second: By position, the believer’s OLD SELF was crucified with Christ (v 6-7) 
 D. Know third: By position, the believer LIVES with Christ NOW and FOREVER (v 8-10) 
II. He Is To LIVE Out His Position In Christ (v 11-13) 
 A. He counts himself DEAD to sin, but ALIVE to God through Christ (v 11) 
 B. He RESISTS sin (v 12) 
 C. He does not YIELD his body to sin (v 13) 
III. He Does Not Have LICENSE To Sin (v 14-23) 
 A. Learn something: Sin will not DOMINATE the true believer (v 14-15) 
 B. Know something: You can serve only one Master-SIN or GOD (v 16) 
 C. Remember something: Your DECISION—you chose righteousness (v 17-18) 
 D. Do something: SERVE God with the same FERVOR that you served sin (v 19-20) 
 E. Question something: What BENEFIT is there in sin? (v 21-22) 
 F. Consider something: The WAGES of sin is death, but the GIFT of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our LORD (v 23)
